Goose has been dead for thirty years when Iceman loses his second wingman to a surface-to-air missile on the tail-end of a mission he's responsible for: he's sent his family on a suicide mission to destroy a uranium enrichment facility in Russia's Far East.
This is the story of those thirty years in the middle.

For entirely selfish reasons Jake is glad that Mav picked him and not Rooster to be on this Mission. Because Rooster would never have survived this.
“No — plea —”
Comes Maverick’s choked and then cut off cry from the cell across the way. Hangman closed his eyes and sought refuge in the corner to hide his face, just like he has many times before this, trying to escape the sounds of his commanding officer being pushed to the very limits of his endurance. And obviously beyond them.

“Are they sure he’s dead? That both of them are dead?” Viper had asked, grilling Slider over the phone. It appeared that Slider had been elected out of all of the FlyBoy’s to break the news.
“The report says —”
“I don’t care what the damn report says!” Viper had growled, already seeing the lines being drawn and the proper amount of distance being put between the commanding officer’s and any sort of blame. “Have they sent anyone in to make sure?”
