Summary
Arthur watched Ennis and Old Boy disappear into the night with their riders in tow. They headed in opposite directions, intent on keeping away from camp a bit longer before they returned to Horseshoe Overlook. 'We should all go it alone right now,' he had said, but he could feel Charles’ stare on him and, when he turned Galahad off the road, he heard Taima following.
He didn't think he was being too presumptuous, and he only had to wait until they broke the treeline for Charles to prove him right. The other man said one word, “Arthur,” and it was all the prompting he needed to pull Galahad to a stop and drop from his saddle.
Instantly, Charles was at his chest, pushing him back, back, and into the trunk of a tree. The horses snorted their offense at their riders’ antics but Arthur barely registered the sound. Charles’ knee was already nudging his thighs apart, his grip on Arthur’s shirt pressing the collar hard against his neck and leaving him gasping.
Charles and Arthur take a little time for themselves following the Pouring-Forth-Oil train robbery.

“Only you, Charles,” John mutters, “Could be so fuckin’ selfless.”
“I’m not-”
“I wasn’t relieved, I was miserable, I wanted the world to end,” John rubs at his eyes again, “Felt like it had. He told me to go be ‘a man’... I know what he meant, and I knew I’d never live up to it.”

“It was a nice wedding,” Charles says.
The little bird sitting on the top of Arthur’s grave tilts its head and peers at him, then flutters off in a burst of chirps. Charles draws in a lungful of smoke, holds it there for a long moment until it burns, and exhales. He sets the unfinished half of the cigarette at the base of the cross, the smoke spiralling skywards like a prayer, and runs a thumb over the fading knife cuts in the wood.

“No, that ain’t-” John makes a frustrated noise and shivers as Arthur gently pets his waist, “I had the thought of both of you, and it’s not been one or the other since. It’s been both.”
“Oh,” Arthur says hoarsely and looks at Charles who’s studying John intensely.
“Is- Is that selfish?” John asks quietly, his grip on Charles’ hand faltering as he avoids both older men’s eyes, “I don’t wanna choose.”

“Every time we’re together now, every time I look at you, all I can think about is–is ruining you,” Charles whispers as if the admission won’t feel as terrible to say if it’s said under his breath. He looks away from Arthur, can’t bear to see what his expression turns into. “Can’t help but see you under me, pinned to the ground, covered nearly head to toe in marks that I made. Can’t stop thinking about being rough with you, about you being rough with me in return, and I can’t do that to you. Can’t ask that of you. You don’t deserve it.” Nobody speaks for a little bit, the air full with the sound of buzzing insects. Charles’ heart thunders in his chest, his head buzzing with possibilities of how Arthur might be feeling right now, what he might be thinking. He braces himself for anger, for yelling, for betrayal.
“Oh,” he hears Arthur say, and it sounds breathy to Charles’ ears. It’s so different from what Charles had been expecting and his gaze snaps up to Arthur to find him with his lips parted, pupils blown. “Can’t be sayin’ things like that to me, not if you ain’t planning on following through.”

Summary

“I seen you take mean looks at the drawer,” Arthur tried, squeezing the hand he was still holding. After a beat, Charles squeezed back at him, before letting the hand go. He shifted, taking a look at Arthur, and then at the toys. Repeated the gesture.
“I’ll throw everythin’ out that you want me to,” Arthur said, voice low. Charles now drilled his gaze into Arthur, slightly shaking his head.
“Arthur, I– I can’t ask you to do that,” Charles said, taking a slightly trembling breath. “They’re yours.”
“But I…” Arthur was at a loss, not sure how he could make it more obvious Charles was more important to him than a random assortment of adult toys. He chewed the inside of his lower lip, taking a deep breath, and shook his head. Arthur did have a follow-up question, but it felt overwhelming to try to ask for it directly.
