Summary
They say that people who settle in such isolated, wild places cradled and battered by the sea are exceptionally at peace with themselves or running away from something. Sherlock certainly knows which one applies to him, but what about his reclusive neighbour John Watson?

From someone else’s summary:
Two damaged men, a remote and barren island in the North Atlantic, and the Cheese Grater of Souls makes their eventual pairing-up both believable and so, so worth the wait. The comments section is always a rewarding addition, too.
*****
“He wakes feeling hungover on everything that has happened in the past few days with his back stiff and his neck in a crick from the old mattress. He's not eaten properly or drank any significant amount of water in over a day. This is not exceptionally long period for him, but a definitely longing for the reassuring warmth of a mug of tea is brewing. When he raises his torso to lean up on his elbows, he can lift the edge of a worn curtain to see outside. Last night he hadn't realised how close the house is to the waves. The sky remains grey, and the waves are licking seaweed-draped rocks. Beyond the proximity of the shore the sea looks like scalloped fish scales due to surface gusts of wind. Sitting up, Sherlock cracks open the window to banish the musty smells inside and is greeted by the screeching of seagulls and terns and the smell of fermented, drying seaweed.
He peels himself off his bunk, his sea-salt damp clothes clinging to his skin, causing him to shudder. The corners of the house are creaking even in this gentle wind, and the sunlight has a cold quality to it. Perhaps even worse weather is approaching. Is there any other kind here? he wonders.”

*****from author’s note:
Ultimately this fic is still always and forever about those three things I hated: Sherlock's understanding of love, Sherlock's deceit of John, and the overcomplicated plots, because as soon as I added to those three things a faked death that necessitated multiple co-conspirators, there was an automatic and fascinating break. Sherlock treats John like the other, like a child or a pet to be protected, not as a partner and a peer, but John is a grown man. He has opinions and feelings and agency, and so does Mycroft, and so does Molly, and so do Harry and Lestrade and Mike and Irene. If Sherlock wants to fake his own death to go and take down Moriarty's organization from within, well, fine, but there's a hell of a lot of other people on this show, and it'd take a hell of a lot more than they've given me to make me believe that all of them are just going to sit around and kick it, especially if we're supposed to believe that some of them know that Sherlock is alive. -

Summary
So..Sherlock and John are getting maudlin but murder stories about St. Stephen's Day cheer them up. The Baker Street Greek Chorus takes a smoke break (really? so unprofessional) while a few of the younger ones drag out their instruments and amps and set up on a handy rooftop with surprisingly accessible electricity. One gravelly dark man grabs a microphone and snaps his fingers. A fur-trimmed goth girl takes her pack of matches and watches him. They gaze across toward London Bridge....

Summary
Contrary to popular belief, Sally Donovan has perfectly valid reasons for her hatred of Sherlock Holmes. These are just a few of them.
