Why Do Non-Canon Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) by sarehptar
Fandoms: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron: Legendary Defender, 僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia

Summary
A vaguely academic examination of the phenomena behind fandom shipping and why certain non-canon ships become exceedingly popular, far overshadowing the popularity of canon ships. This essay touches on common mistakes writers make with female characters and romantic subplots, and suggests a explanation for the enduring popularity of so many m/m ships which have no chance at all of becoming canon. Examples are drawn from Avatar the Last Air Bender, Voltron Legendary Defender (god help me), and My Hero Academia.

In the wake of 50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James, a current bestselling novel that started life as Twilight fanfiction, questions about are being asked. If the only difference between a piece of fanfiction and a bestselling novel is the changing of character names and places, then is the deletion stories without warning something that should be bigger news?

Summary
Wherein we discuss the differences between Sex and Gender and what it means to be an Alpha, Beta, or Omega from both a biological and socio-cultural point of view.
Specifically for those who don't understand the Omegaverse, or haven't thought very far ahead in their worldbuilding. This is how I imagine this universe, because it doesn't make any sense to me as it is. Covers tricky subjects such as: Alpha and Omega Females, gender-switched pairs (Such as Alpha-Female/Omega-Male or vice versa), the importance of Betas, ABO evolution, sexism and gender-prejudices, alternative sexualities and more!

Summary
This week we take a step to the right, away from academic discussions of fandom, to look at Janice Radway's classic ethnographic study of romance novel readers, Reading the Romance: Women, Patriarchy, and Popular Literature. This text is continuously referenced in fan studies, with very good reason we think, now that we've read it. Please come and settle in for Episode 6! PLEASE NOTE - We do talk about the place of rape in romance stories in this podcast.
This was recorded quite a while ago now, but we do hope to have something to offer you in the not toooooo distant future.
Also, please enjoy this episode's recs! Some of us tried to pick something that fit into the discussion themes, with varying levels of success, but they are all excellent stories and we hope you enjoy them regardless!

So I am going to attempt to fully inform you, to the best of my medical abilities, and then I don’t ever have to see that comment on my dash ever again until the new series airs and we finally find out the truth of intents and what not.
