Summary
Ten years ago, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov were the two most ruthless students at University of Michigan Law School. Brilliant, combative, and incapable of staying away from each other, they spent three years trying to out-argue, outmaneuver, and outlast one another in lecture halls, libraries, and the privacy of Shane’s apartment. Somewhere between the rivalry and the obsession, they fell disastrously in love.
And then it ended horribly.
Now, a decade later, Shane is a partner at a big-time law firm in Montreal and Ilya is the star attorney in Boston who sticks up for the little guy, and they have been hired to fight on opposite sides of a heated civil trial. The case is supposed to be standard, easy, simple. Instead, it becomes a slow-motion collision with everything they spent ten years trying to bury. In court, the burden of proof is everything. As the trial drags on and old wounds reopen, Shane and Ilya are forced to confront the question they never answered the first time around. Can they prove to themselves that what they had is truly over, or has the verdict already been waiting for them all along?

"Hm. Probably he seduced and stole your young wife away... That’s his job. Stealing the hearts of young maidens. Could explain why he was so cross to see you. It’d make you the Hero of this story. Bad news for types like him. You stay away from Rozanov."

Shane Hollander finds himself trapped between worlds, living among the spirits without his memories of the human world. The only creature that seems to know him, seems to want him dead.

Summary
Dallas Kent, CEO of a notorious chemical company, is brutally murdered days before he was scheduled to present at an environmental summit. And no one heard or saw anything—not his bodyguard, not his business partner, not the hotel staff, not even the tenacious journalist who keeps popping up around the crime scene.
It would be a normal day on the job for Detective Ilya Rozanov, except for one thing. The partner he's been assigned for the case is his old flame from his academy days: Shane Hollander, the man he's spent five years trying to forget.
A speculative fiction noir AU. My love letter to port towns, detective fiction, Disco Elysium, sea shanties, and of course, Hollanov.
