Driving Your Rivals to Murder and Love

Chapter Text

------

Well, this has been a long time coming, hasn't it?

I swore to myself for a long time that I would get back to this fic at some point. Obviously, as the last update was in 2018, that ended up being a lie. As time went on, it got harder and harder to try to get myself to care or try to work on it, for two main reasons.

1) the obvious. Yandere Dev fucking sucks as a person. While originally, me writing this was spiteful, eventually it got to the point that his existence soured me on the game itself- similar to Harry Potter, giving attention to the media even just through fandom was too much like supporting the creator, especially when their shitty, horrible personalities seep into it. Yandev's racism, fetishism, and pedophilia felt far too blatant and I just... couldn't get myself to try to keep writing a fix it when the original thing was so fucking broken.

2) the evolution of the game.

This one is harder to explain, but the game I started writing this for is not the game it is now. Ranbaru didn't exist. No security cameras. Hell, when I first started, the student council just wasn't a thing, except for the eventual rival. The game itself evolved far past what I've written, and it will continue to do so unless Yandev gets hit by a truck or something. My fic is functionally a screenshot of what the game was like the exact moment I got into it, and that's it. Newer fans would look at this and go what the hell are you talking about?

However. This fic was a big deal for a lot of people. I've gotten so many comments about it that were absolutely insane. What do you mean I helped multiple people figure out their sexuality or that they're polyamorous? How the fuck was this fic big enough that when I made a friend, entirely unrelated to the fandom, I found out they'd been a huge fan? And I still get comments from people who are doing rereads because it was important to them. It's incredibly flattering that so many people cared about my old teenage writing.

So now, because I have officially given up on this, and as thanks to those people, here are... my original notes on the rest of the fic. They are not being formatted in any way, you're getting them as the stream-of-conscious it was.

"oka's week was about her getting bullied almost to suicide by the.... bullies after daku's death, so aya was building connections with the student council for framing the bullies for crimes and outing them for the actual bullying they did. meanwhile she and oka are going on dates and falling in love. also oka is brought into the murders by 1) ayano bringing up the cooking club murder/suicide and 2) ayano killing one of the bullies at the end of the week

oka is 100% into this. she's just more into the death stuff than the 'oh how romantic she's doing it for ME' thing that kizana is

asu's week wasn't set in stone, but this was around when i realized i was trans and so i was writing her as a trans girl getting some shit from the vampire twins. i hadn't decided how ayano was going to kill the girls, but asu was going to be kept ignorant

osoro's week was going to be combined with muja's. osoro comes back early for unknown reasons (actually because the student council vice president is spying on ayano and pulls some strings). senpai gets sick and muja flirts with her while she takes care of her, and ayano spends the week riling up osoro until she lashes out and kills muja. ayano helps her clear up the corpse.

similarly, hanako and mida's weeks were going to be combined too. hanako transfers early after hearing about the nurse who creeped on her sister, and also because the play is this week and she wants that sweet sweet student discount for play tickets so she can watch every performance. unfortunately, mida is also a disgusting creep who hits on senpai, and hanako, a little too precocious, realizes from rumors that ayano is probably related to all the deaths and disappearances at the school. she tries to plead with ayano to take care of the teacher too, even though ayano was already going to

(originally i was going to have hanako and ayano date too, but now i think it'd be weird because.... senpai.)

at the end of hanako's week, ayano is asked by kuroko, the vice president, to join the student council. ayano, worried that they've caught on, especially after hanako realized it, agrees to seem less suspicious

for that reason, megami returns early. she's openly suspicious of ayano but keeps a close eye on her in the student council. ayano tries to weasel her way into megami's good books, but it only semi-works when kuroko reveals that, this entire time, she's been trying to weasel her way into ayano's heart, so that ayano will kill megami for her. she's known the whole time that ayano's a huge murder lesbian, and megami is the one who ruined kuroko's life by taking her place as student council president, so-

what do you mean ayano likes megami more over the course of one week than she ever has kuroko.

so. kuroko dies, partially because she tried to kill megami on her own. megami is willing to keep her mouth shut on this ONE occasion because it would be trouble if her business was made public when she has to be so careful about her image, and she does, privately, appreciate ayano's sense of protectiveness towards those she cares about.

the final week is about senpai, and more specifically, ayano's mother. her mom comes home from her trip, excited to hear about ayano's true love, but she becomes murderous when she learns that ayano has multiple, and plans to get rid of the 'distractions' from ayano's original love, senpai. ayano manages to actually win over megami by giving her enough information to get her mother put away for life before she can hurt anyone. in the process, senpai learns about ayano's "curse".... which is actually just mothers horribly traumatizing their daughters until they're the same type of fucked up they are.

[insert: what little I wrote about that.

"the women in my family... we're all cursed. cursed to never feel, never be happy or sad or angry, until we meet our soulmate. our one and only love. someone we'd do anything for. someone we'd... we'd do anything to keep to ourselves. but i'm not like that, senpai! you've seen it yourself- you've seen how much i love everyone in our group! so it's not... it isn't real. not really. i'm not like that, i swear, i swear-"

'i know. i know you aren't. i know... you're a really good person, ayano. and you're happy and sad and angry like everybody else. don't listen to her. she's wrong.']

senpai and ayano start dating, as well as ayano settling in the rest of the polycule. ayano cuts her hair to show her new phase of life

senpai is kept blissfully ignorant. but everyone else has learned along the way, and they keep their silence in exchange for ayano's promise to try not to murder unless absolutely necessary. ayano's dad needs to get a lot of mental health help for all the fucked up shit hes lived through for a decade and a half so ayano gets to be on her own again with half of her girlfriends living with her. life is good."
