Chapter Text
Mitsi was working in her office. She heard the door open and shut so quietly, and not long after, felt a gentle tug on her sleeve– she could tell it was Vic, she was only alarmed when she looked up to them and saw they were teary-eyed.
“Can I talk to you,” they whispered, “please?"
The work she was doing was no longer even half as important.
She stood up quickly–
“N-no, no, uh. You don't have to stand..” they wiped at their face with their arm, pushing their glasses up in the process. “I just…I don't know, I-I’ve been thinking.”
Mitsi deeply wanted to prompt them with a ‘what is it you've been thinking about, love?’ but figured she should let them spit the words out themselves.
“Agent..told me something about herself, she said, she wasn't always a girl? But she is now. And she's happier now, a-and..I don't know, I think I feel similarly? I don't.. It's complicated. I don't think I want to be a guy. But I don't know if I entirely want to be a girl either? I'd prefer it, but… I want, g-gosh, something halfway between them? With … maybe be slightly closer to feminity?”
Mitsi thought for a minute. Suddenly things were making a lot more sense. “I'm sure we can figure it out together, yeah, love? Why don't we research it?”
Vic nodded quietly, sniffling.
“... Are you distressed about this, or are you crying about something else?”
“Oh,” they fixed their sleeve, “Kinda, um, both. I was so happy for Agent, but suddenly so confused about me..”
“I understand.” She typed slowly, trying to figure out the words to say to it while Vic sat on the empty space of her desk– she tried not to giggle. Vic was mimicking her.
“Do you want.. a different name?”
“I .. don't know. I haven't thought of that. But I haven't ever seen a name I liked more… I think it'll just come to me if it does.”
“Tell me whenever you think of something,” Mitsi clicked away.
“I will.” Vic smiled a little, face still wet.
“I think I've found a website. Wanna look at it together?”
Vic nodded, and slid off the desk to lean beside her chair.
—
“So, let me run through this. You'd rather I call you my wife? And or partner?”
Vic nodded their head.
“And you like they/them pronouns?”
Another nod.
“As well as occasionally it/its?”
One more.
“You're okay still with the name Vic?”
“Mhm.”
“And you don't want to be considered my husband from here on out, or any other masculine titles?”
“Yeah.”
She took a breath and placed her hand on Vic’s. “Well, thank you for telling me, darling. I'm glad you did– the last thing I want to do is upset you.”
“Thank you,” Vic murmured. “For understanding.”
“Of course. I will always do my best to understand.”
“I love you,” Vic sandwiched Mitsi's hand between theirs.
“I love you too, always.”
Vic smiled in such a cute way that melted Mitsi when she got to see it– so small yet so full of emotion, so genuine, but almost afraid to show it.
They pushed their head into the space between hers and her shoulders.
She mourned not getting to see it, but decided that knowing it was present was just as good.
