Good Soil

Summary:

“A recent case had required a comprehensive knowledge of houseplants. Now that Holmes had spend a truly impressive time studying them, he had taken over the care of all the plants in 221B.”

Work Text:

Holmes had been intermittently humming or singing for much of the day. At times, Watson found it a little distracting. After all, he was trying to write, and any sounds interrupted his concentration.

But although distracting, it wasn’t unwelcome. Watson always loved to listen to Holmes, whether speaking or singing. Besides, it was a sign that he was happy, and Holmes being happy despite the current lack of a case was cause for celebration indeed.

That happiness seemed largely due to the fact that he had recently taken up a new hobby, and one which allowed him to hurtle around the house getting in Mrs. Hudson’s way as much as possible. A recent case had required a comprehensive knowledge of houseplants. Now that Holmes had spend a truly impressive time studying them, he had taken over the care of all the plants in 221B.

In truth, it was likely very good for the plants to have the extra attention. Mrs. Hudson certainly watered her plants on schedule, but many of them needed a bit of maintenance. Holmes had taken on that responsibility with great excitement, and was presently occupied repotting one plant after another.

Watson glanced over his shoulder and smiled. Holmes sat cross legged on the floor of the sitting room, an old bedsheet protecting the floor. He sang softly as he settled a fern into a new pot, then tucked soil around the roots. Judging by his joyous expression, this hobby was here to stay, even if it became less of an obsession once the initial excitement wore off.

Smiling, Watson turned back to his writing. He might not get quite as much done today as he’d hoped, but that was all right. Holmes was enjoying himself immensely, and spending the day together always brought Watson happiness too.
