Chapter Text
"No, no. Bad idea. Bad idea." Gray panicked as they went further into the woods, Zach rolled his eyes. "Great idea." He said, trying to lift his brother's spirits. "No!" Gray whined. "We're gonna get arrested, they'll shave our heads, and we're gonna have to make root beer in the toilet." Gray rambled on. "What the hell are you talking about?" Zach scoffed, his younger brother did this a lot. Overthinking about the smallest things, always making up the worst possible scenarios. As Zach pushed the control for the Gyro-sphere forward, he looked to the side, noticing the spiky-looking dinosaurs with the rock on its tail, or as Gray would call them, Ankylosauruses. "There." He pointed them out. "You see? I told you." Zach reassured the younger boy. He pushed the Gyro-sphere forward. "Up close and personal with four..." Zach thought hard. He knew their name, he was sure. At least he thought. "Dinosauruses." Gray looked at him, annoyed at his lack of knowledge when it came to dinosaurs. "Ankylosaurus." He corrected. "We shouldn't be here." Gray reminded Zach. "And there's five dinosaurs." The younger brother grumbled. "Aren't you supposed to be a genius or something? Look." Zach pointed and started counting.
"One."
"Two."
"Three."
"Four."
Gray raised his arm and pointed into the group of Ankylosauruses.
"Five."
He restated. That's when Zach saw it. A reflection in the glass of the sphere they were in. Teeth. A low rumbling started behind them, sending shivers down Zach's spine. He looked behind them, Gray quickly following after him. The sun blinded them, the only thing they could see was the outline of a big, no, huge dinosaur. After a second of staring at it, its huge mouth opened as it let out a deafening roar. That's when they could finally see it in all of its glory. Zach immediately turned around and reached for the controls. "Go, go, go, go!" Gray yelled. Just as Zach got a hold of the stick, the dinosaur kicked the sphere forward, sending them launching into the crowd of Ankylosauruses. They startled away, their heavy footsteps were drowned out by heavier footsteps behind them. Gray let out a scream of terror, shutting his eyes as the sphere spun, hitting the bulletproof glass against multiple dinosaurs. The sphere got launched around like a game of pinball. Zach reached for his brother, trying to calm him down. "Hold it together, man!" He said as they came to a stop. An Ankylosaurus in front of them roared at the dinosaur behind them. Zach didn't know what type it was, obviously. But Gray didn't either. This wasn't a dinosaur they had at the park. At least he thought. The dinosaur roared back. They turned their gaze to it, frozen in fear. It looked like the dinosaurs were about to fight. Taking its distraction as an opportunity, Zach reached for the controls and began to drive away. "Drive! Drive! Go!" Gray panicked next to the older brother. As they made their way past the dinosaurs, the Ankylosaurus' tail came around and whacked into the Gyro-sphere, leaving large cracks in the glass. The sphere got launched backwards, and both of the brothers yelped. The sphere moved backwards for a few feet before slamming into a tree, the sphere slid back, turning the pair upside down. Zach looked around, disoriented as he reached for the controls. He was desperately trying to drive the sphere out of the way, saving both him and his brother from whatever was coming after the pair.
The dinosaurs fought for a while. But Zach wasn't paying attention. He was focused on getting the controls to work. After a few tugs of the stick, he realized it wasn't going to work. He looked at Gray as Gray looked back, the scared expression on his younger brother's face disturbing Zach greatly. They looked back at the scene before them. The thing had won, flipping the Ankylosaurus on its back as it kicked wildly. The dinosaur let out a roar and clamped its jaws around the herbivore's head. It twisted as a loud crunch filled their ears. The bloody scene of the dinosaur ripping sent shivers down Zach's spine. Gray averted his gaze. "We're safe in here, right?" Gray asked . Zach wasn't sure. "Yeah, totally safe." He reassured, more himself than Gray. After a few seconds of silence a low vibrating sound could be heard below them, they looked up. Zach's phone, which he hadn't even noticed was gone, was ringing. Aunt Claire's smiling face was plastered on the screen. Zach reached for it. His arm stretched forward. If he got the phone, maybe he could call for help. The vibrating phone danced on the glass, avoiding Zach's grip. He groaned as he almost got the phone. "Zach." Gray's voice broke his focus. "Almost got it."
"Zach."
"Yeah?"
"Look."
As the phone stopped vibrating, Zach looked forward. He could see the dinosaur's eye. It was looking at them. It was looking at them. Its pupil dilated when it noticed them looking back. A low rumble escaped its mouth. It blinked and Zach let out a low whimper. Shit. This wasn't good. It stood up and stepped around the glass sphere that protected them. Its footsteps shook the floor. Its arms reached and grabbed onto the Gyro-sphere. It spun them around. Gray reached for his brother, his arm holding onto Zach's, seeking comfort. It turned them upright as the creature reached its claw upwards and slammed into the glass, breaking it. Zach flinched. He closed his eyes, breathing heavily. After a few seconds of silence, he opened his eyes. Gray stared into Zach and then back at the dinosaur. Its mouth opened as its jaw wrapped around the ball. Zach and Gray screamed, their eyes shutting in fear. Its breath fogged up the glass as it bit down. It didn't work, then it tried again. After a few seconds of biting, the glass gave way. Its teeth broke the glass. It picked the ball up. And then slammed it down. Then it slammed it down again. Gray yelled in terror as Zach looked around for an escape. After a few slams, the glass behind them broke, leaving an exit.
Zach reached for his seatbelt then for Gray's. As he undid them, they slid out of the sphere onto the dirt. They looked up. The creature was about to slam the sphere down again. Zach pulled Gray in as the glass came around them. It pulled it upwards. Zach pushed Gray forward. "Go! Go!" He urged. They ran forwards. The dinosaur continued to bite at the sphere for a few seconds before noticing the boys had escaped. It roared behind them. Zach continued to run, Gray was in front of him. "Gray, go!" He yelled. They made their way out of the dense, tree-populated area and into a clearing. The dinosaur followed, pushing past the trees. Gray looked back, frozen for a second before sprinting forward. "Oh, crap!" He yelled. Zach was in front now, his longer legs giving him an advantage. After a few seconds of running at full speed, they came to a stop. There was a waterfall. Zach looked behind, the dinosaur was gaining on them. He turned to Gray.
"We have to jump."
"I can't."
Gray had never learned how to swim.
"Are you ready?"
"One."
"Two."
He grabbed onto Gray's arm, preparing himself to jump and pull his brother with him. He jumped. The dinosaur reached its jaws forward and clamped. Zach wasn't paying attention to it right now. He could only focus on the sweaty palm of his brother. He fell into the water below him. After a few seconds of disorientation, he pulled himself out of the water, still holding onto his brother's arm. He took in deep breaths as he started laughing, he had escaped. He had saved him and his brother. He opened his eyes.
"Gray?"
He held onto the hand.
”Gray?"
He started panicking, looking around for his brother. Blood gushed from the arm, leaking into the muddy water. Zach felt tears begin to cloud his vision.
"Gray!"
He held onto the arm tighter. Oh, god. Oh, god. Oh, god. He looked up the cliff, the dinosaur was gone. He looked at the arm again, It was severed. he felt vomit make its way up his throat. He threw the arm away. He couldn't bare to hold it any longer. His body thrashed as the vomit spilled out onto the mud. After a few quick breaths, he began to sob.
"Gray..." He whimpered.
