Chapter 1: Redacted

Chapter Text

The world was screaming. Hydra’s secrets, once buried for decades, were now out in the open—classified experiments, erased identities, operations thought long dead—all splashed across news feeds and public forums. Governments were scrambling, the Avengers were on high alert, and chaos ran through the networks like wildfire. It was the perfect storm, a digital apocalypse that had been decades in the making.

And in the eye of the hurricane, in a darkened room far from prying eyes, The Rising Tide moved like ghosts.

Monitors glowed green and blue, lines of code running faster than any human could follow. This wasn't the chaotic celebration of other hacktivist groups; this was a surgical strike. Lines of data disappeared, timestamps were rewritten, digital breadcrumbs erased with meticulous precision. Every reference to the Lost Heir—a boy the world didn’t even know existed—was being carefully buried beneath layers of untraceable encryption.

A single file blinked on the largest screen, almost deliberately: “Lost Heir.”

The operators froze. Even in the middle of Hydra’s public meltdown, this file felt… alive. Dangerous. It was a ghost story that was terrifyingly real.

“Are we really doing this?” one voice whispered, tension thick in the air. “I mean, Hydra’s burning. Their whole network is on fire. Why not just let this one go? Let the world see what they did to Stark’s kid.”

“Because this isn’t just another Hydra secret,” the lead operator’s voice cut through the darkness, low and calm. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, almost reverent. “Every other file we’re seeing is about the past. This one… this one is about the present. A living, breathing present.”

She didn't need to say more. They all knew the file’s contents. But she brought it up anyway, a brutal reminder of the stakes. The screen flickered, and the cold, clinical text was replaced by images. A birth certificate for Toby Anthony Stark, followed by a photo of a newborn, swaddled in a blanket with a tiny arc reactor stitched onto the corner. The baby had Tony’s eyes.

Then came the horror. A series of chillingly professional photographs from a morgue. An infant, pale and still, a tag on its toe identifying it as 'Peter Parker.' The file noted the cause of death: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. A tragedy. A perfect, unimpeachable cover.

But the next image made a veteran operator in the back of the room gag. It was a scanned page from a Hydra agent’s field report. A picture of the same baby, Toby Stark, sleeping peacefully in a crib. Next to it, a photo of the agent holding the deceased infant, Peter Parker, in a hospital nursery, the image taken through a telephoto lens. The caption beneath it was cold, clinical, and monstrous: Asset secured. Substitute deployed. Phase one complete.

“He didn’t just die,” the lead operator whispered, her voice raw. “They erased him. They stole his life and gave it to a corpse.”

The final image was the most gut-wrenching of all. It was a candid shot, taken years later, from a distance. A teenage boy with messy brown hair and a kind, tired face, walking out of a Midtown High School. He was laughing at something a friend said, a backpack slung over his shoulder. He looked completely, blissfully ordinary. The file name beneath the photo read: Subject Observation: P. Parker. Status: Viable.

Peter Parker was Toby Stark. A living ghost, raised by strangers, watched by monsters.

“Think about what happens when this drops,” she continued, her gaze sweeping across the pale faces of her team. “It’s not just a headline. It’s a bomb. The first person to feel the blast is the boy in that picture. He’s a smart, decent kid who thinks his parents are dead. What do you think happens when he finds out his entire life is a lie? That his name is a lie, his past is a lie, and his real father is a man he’s probably only seen on TV? It wouldn’t just break him; it would shatter his soul.”

She let that sink in before moving to the greater threat. “And what about Tony Stark? The man who has been grieving for a son he thought was dead for years. How does he handle the news that his son is alive, but has been living as a stranger, a pawn in Hydra’s game, while he was none the wiser? The guilt would eat him alive. He would either shut down completely or go on a warpath that would make New York look like a playground scuffle.”

She stood up, her silhouette framed by the glowing screens. “But none of that is the real reason we bury this. The real reason is him. Tony Stark isn’t just a hero. He’s the lynchpin. He’s the genius who reverse-engineers alien tech. The visionary who funds the Avengers. The engineer who builds the shields and the weapons that protect this planet. He is the heart of the only thing standing between humanity and the next cosmic horror that decides to take a bite out of our planet.”

Her voice was steel. “What happens to that heart when it finds out its own son was used as a pawn by the very evil it fights? What happens to the man who holds the line when he learns he failed to protect the one thing that mattered most? He breaks. And when Tony Stark breaks, the world is left defenseless. The fallout from this truth wouldn’t just destroy a man; it would invite the apocalypse. We wouldn't just be exposing a crime; we’d be signing the death warrant of everyone on this planet.”

The room was silent, the weight of her words crushing the air. Their mission wasn't about transparency or revenge. It was a triage on a global scale. The only way to save the world was to let this one injustice stand, to bury the truth so deep it could never claw its way out.

They scrubbed, encrypted, and hid everything, working as if the very act of typing could hold the universe together. They were creating a digital void, a space where a monstrous crime and its innocent victim could be forgotten, not for the sake of the villains, but for the sake of every soul on Earth.

And then she leaned back in her chair. Calm, composed, eyes cold and calculating. Skye.

“Skye?” the younger operator asked, his voice now soft with dawning horror.

Her gaze met theirs, sharp, unyielding, and full of a terrible purpose. “We move in silence,” she said. “Because some truths are too dangerous to be found. Not by the public. Not by SHIELD. Not by the Avengers. We are saving the world by damning this one boy to a lie. It’s the only choice we have.”

For a heartbeat, the room was silent, the hum of servers the only sound. And then, with a few precise keystrokes, Skye sent a hidden command buried deep within the system. A message, encrypted so completely it would vanish from any normal terminal. One recipient. Only one. The person who had requested this work. The one who understood the stakes better than anyone.

Somewhere far away, in a secure SHIELD terminal that had somehow survived the purge, a single notification appeared. It was a ghost in his machine, a message from a phantom.

Phil Coulson read it and froze.

The message was simple: It is done. The tomb is sealed. The world is safe from the truth. For now.

The Rising Tide had erased every trace of the crime and its living legacy. They had used the chaos of Hydra's downfall to bury their darkest secret. The world saw a villain's empire crumble, but the most innocent victim of that empire remained hidden, his life a lie that was now the only thing protecting humanity itself.

The screen went dark.

And somewhere in Queens, a boy named "Peter Parker" slept, oblivious to the forces moving around him, the world unraveling, and the secret of his own identity, a secret that could destroy or define him, and perhaps, everyone else along with him.
