Chapter Text
'My dear Y/N,
I hope you arrived in London safely, my ship to America leaves tomorrow morning and I find myself dreading the journey.
As much as I wish for Frank to return home, I know you and I will miss him dearly. But it will be best for him to return to his natural habitat, no matter what grief we might feel.
I must admit I am quite anxious about the journey without you by my side, it is a foreign feeling to set off alone. Please inform me of how your meeting with the editor went. If they don't like your book, they must certainly be daft and blind on top of that.
I will write to you as soon as I have set foot off the boat, rest assured Dougal is no longer grumpy about your departure. Although he has grown restless inside the case. Pickett has unfortunately caught a cold and has now taken permanent residence in my coat.
Please take care of yourself.
Yours,
Newt
P.s. Pickett is unfortunately still angry with you for 'leaving' us. He's being a bit dramatic.'
A knock against the window to her right caught her attention while touring through the unfamiliar rooms. After all their time spend together, Newt had graciously suggested to her to live in his flat while she tried to find one of her own upon her return to England.
Opening the window in order to grant the familiar owl to gain entry, she sat down on the nearby couch after giving it some treats.
After reading his handwriting on the back, she quickly opened in order to read his long awaited message.
'My dear,
Congratulations on your book deal! I knew you could do it.
I deeply apologize for my delayed response. Unfortunately, I have found myself in quite a bit of trouble here in America.
The Niffler caused havoc in a bank and unfortunately a Muggle became involved.
After failing to obliviate him, I had been caught by a former Auror, Tina Goldstein.
Unfortunately for her, most people in the MACUSA gave her no credit and dismissed her.
Then, when their Director wanted to search my case, I actually found out that it had been switched with the Muggle's!
You can probably imagine the amount of panic I felt that moment. And it was warranted, that blasted lock gave in and a few creatures escaped.
As of now, I have found myself in quite the unlikely place. The Goldstein sisters have taken us in, the Muggle, Mr Kowalski and I are currently inside my case.
His reactions to the creatures reminded me of the first time you saw the case.
We are going to search for the missing magical beasts together before they come to any harm.
I am uncertain of when I will have the chance to write you again, but I will do so the next opportunity I have.
I am eagerly awaiting your reply.
Yours,
Newt
P.s. I found some of the little notes you left for me hidden around the case. Thank you, I must say it has helped me more than I thought.'
After that, there were no more letters.
She had penned a second letter and a third, that all started collecting dust in his desk drawer.
Everything around Y/N reminded her of him, reminded her of his absence.
If she could at least know that he was safe, it would have soothed her worries. But unfortunately, she wasn't granted the luxury and thus continued to anxiously await his reply.
Four days later, Sybille, Newts owl finally appeared again.
There was only a scrawny note clutched in her beak. After bribing her with a few treats, she had managed to free the small piece of paper and quickly poured over it.
'My dear Y/N,
I do not have much time, a lot has happened, and I am uncertain of my own safety. But rest assured I will do my best to stay safe, after all I want to be the one to tell you of this tale. If anything happens to me, please take care of our creatures. We miss you.
Newt'
His words filled her with dread, worries coming back tenfold. The letter is of little reassurance to her, and she finds herself lingering near the windows, awaiting more.
The next time she heard about Newt, it wasn't from his letters.
"Grindelwald captured in New York!"
"Ministry catches Grindelwald with help of magic zoologist"
"The downfall of Grindelwald"
The headlines screamed at her that morning, repeating the same story over and over again.
Newt Scamander, her Newt, had helped to capture the most feared wizard of their generation.
A whirlwind of emotions swirled through her at the revelation. At least she knew that he was safe. That he was alive and well.
But at the same time, fear still shook her deeply as she imagined him going up against such a powerful dark wizard.
And Y/N hadn't even heard it from him. No, she had read it in the newspapers after almost a week of not a single sign of life.
Taking quick strides she entered his study, while ignoring her plants asking for attention, she strode unnering to the messy table.
Throwing her notes and revisions to the side and slamming a paper onto the now empty space, she penned another letter.
Readjusting his hold on the suitcase, Newt nervously waited in line amongst the Muggles to be allowed to disembark the ship.
Fixing his tie again, he shuffled from one leg onto the other while trying to find her face amongst the crowd waiting at the docs.
Her latest letter sat heavily in his breast pocket, together with a list of apologies he had prepared.
Although thankfully quiet, he could feel Pickett stir inside his place in his coat pocket. Gently shushing the creature, he stepped onto the plank.
Many faces passed him by, a sea of black and brown surrounded Newt as the terminal buzzed with energy. Clutching his case tightly as he made the toilsome journey through the crowd.
At moments like these, he found himself thankful for his height, using it to his advantage when looking for Y/N's head poking amongst the others.
When he found her standing near one of the columns, his heart skipped a beat.
As soon as they made eye contact, her neutral expression turned into one of barely contained rage.
"Newton Artemis Fido Lurch Scamander" her normally melodious voice shrieked.
Shrinking into himself, he looked to his left as his shoulders hunched defensively.
"You have no idea how worried I was! First you tell me you have been arrested and uncertain when you could write again and then you send that cryptic letter. And on top of that, you suddenly stopped writing me and the next thing I hear, through the paper by the way, is that you have fought Grindelwald?" her tirade went on for a few more seconds until her mask cracked.
With her voice shaking she confessed "I was so afraid. What if something had happened to you, and I wasn't there to help."
Tears swam in her eyes as her frustration and worry bubbled over.
All his prepared answers were forgotten as he stood in front of her. All thoughts slipped from his mind but the one screaming at him to comfort her.
Throwing his reservations to the wind, he wrapped her in a warm hug before she finally gave him. Weakly sniffling, Y/N clung to his coat as he shushed her softly.
"I'm sorry" Newt mumbled into her hair.
To others, they might appear an ordinary sight, just a couple embracing after being apart. If only they were one. Things were... complicated.
Their constant travelling barely gave any time for a date or other romantic notions. And Newt was still so shy that not much had changed since the kiss.
Not knowing what she was to him had further fuelled the fire of her worry especially after he had complimented the Auror in his letters.
"I never meant for things to escalate like this. I will tell you everything once we're home, OK?" Newt placated her until they could escape the publics eye.
As soon as the door clicked shut behind him, she turned around impatiently. Seeing her demanding stance made him smile fondly, she reminded him of a Hippogriff with their no nonsense attitude.
Smiling sheepishly, he directed Y/N into the sitting room, steering her by the shoulders.
"I want to know everything" she insisted stubbornly while crossing her arms.
Sitting down beside her on the couch, he sighed deeply, "that might take a while."
And so, she spent the next hour listening to the unbelievable tale of Newts visit to America, while nibbling on some biscuits and tea.
When he had finished, her mind still reeled from the revelation that he had been sentenced to death by Grindelwald masquerading as Mr Graves.
"You should meet Tina" Newt beamed happily.
Putting down her cup, you frowned, "I'd love to, but it's so far away."
With another smile, he waved off her concern, "firstly, I will worry about publishing my book. Because, I have promised Tina to personally deliver her copy."
Clearly reading the romantic insinuation under it, her heart sank, but she quickly pushed the feelings of jealousy away.
"I'd like you to come along when I go. I'm sure you'd be good friends with them too" hearing the excitement in his tone, she was unable to even entertain the notion of denying him.
"But only if they are fine with it" she made the condition. Nodding assuredly, Newt agreed and told jer that he would write them this evening.
The moment Newt had signed his book deal, they had celebrated thoroughly. And although it took some time, she supported him throughout the many sleepless nights hounded by his editor's demands.
She had hoped that with time, and the fact that they constantly spend it together, would bring forth some kind of new development in their relationship. If she could even call it that.
Since his stay in America, Newt had drawn away a bit, keeping more distance and seeking more privacy.
But he would still seek out her comfort or hug quite often. But he hadn't kissed her since his return, not on the mouth at least. Currently, she survived off pecks on the forehead and gentle kisses on her hand.
It all left her mind reeling. Just what exactly was he thinking, feeling, wanting?
Perhaps it was his shyness, but Y/N couldn't shake the lingering doubt. It had started in America, and that woman, Tina, he keeps bringing her up quite often.
If only she could have a look into his mind and know what exactly was going on.
