Work Text:
Emma doesn’t think she was ever made to be a mum.
She loves to teach, share her knowledge with the younger generation but having her own kid. One that shares her genes or a last name is different.
So when she finds out she’s pregnant with a girl she doesn’t know what to think. She’s not sure she is ready to have a baby of her own.
To bring a little human into the big wide world that’s full of dangers and catastrophes.
But Nik looks so happy when she shares the news that she can’t admit her worries. Her worries of not being enough or ready to be a mum are pushed aside.
So she pushes through with the morning sickness and the maternity appointments with the midwife. She forces a smile onto her face, even when it doesn’t meet her eyes.
She knows the midwife notices, when she pulls Emma aside and puts a few leaflets into her hand.
Emma binna them outside the hospital grounds - the last thing she wants is for Nik to get a whiff of what is going on and tries to fix things.
Chloe is a tiny baby, in her arms and Emma stares down at her in wonder.
How she can hold something so fragile in her hands.
What if she breaks her.
Ruins her innocent little brain.
So when the inevitable relationship break down happens and Nik wants Chloe to come live with him, she doesn’t put up much of a fight.
So it begins to fall apart all over again when Chloe comes to move in.
