Charlie let out a sigh as she finished the last bite of her sandwich. Avery had finished hers awhile ago. It wasn’t exactly a picnic that they were having, but did that really matter? They were having fun and weren’t disturbing anyone else at the park.
The bench that the two of them were sitting on was easy to see from nearly anywhere in the park, so they had to be a bit more careful than they had previously been. Especially since it was Easter Sunday, everyone was out. Sure, if someone they didn’t know saw them kiss it would be fine, but there were people who knew them here.
Avery loosely wrapped an arm around her sister’s waist. It was just subtle enough that no one would question them on why they were being so affectionate with each other.
They both watched as the horde of kids from the surrounding neighborhoods rushed into the park. This was maybe the third group of them that have showed up since Charlie and Avery sat down, and the two were sure that they were going to see a lot more by the end of the day.
Charlie smiled as she watched the kids run around together looking for the plastic eggs that were scattered around the park. It reminded her of the few times she had done it when she was a child. Although, by the time that she was able to do it, Avery had been too old, so she had never been able to with her sister.
They sat in silence for the rest of the afternoon just watching the children run around. A few of the eggs had been scattered around where they were sitting, so a few of the kids had come up to them. Thankfully, none of them knew them all that well.
The sun was setting by the time that a majority of the kids were gone. There were a few still left though, looking to see if there were any eggs left. Charlie remembered being one of those kids, it was almost like seeing a past version of herself.
“Come, let’s go home,” Avery said as she patted Charlie on her back.
Charlie got up and followed after Avery. As they left the park, Charlie saw a bunny run from one bush to the other.
