Chapter Text
“Are you breaking up with me?”
“I’m sorry.”
“You don’t get to do that. You don’t get to lie to me and use that as an excuse to leave me. Ok? That is not ok.”
Lucy doesn’t hear the rest he’s saying. Her brain just shuts down. Like after that explosion. She can’t believe her whole world is crumbling down.
She feels Tim’s kiss on her forehead and then he walks away and she is alone.
She can’t believe it. She can’t move. She can’t breathe. Her heart just stopped beating.
Lucy has no idea how she got back home. She just drops everything on the floor and walks towards the kitchen island, placing her hands on the cold marble, trying to ground herself. Closing her eyes, she takes a large breath. Breathe in, breathe out. Don’t panic.
Thank god Tamara is away for the next 3 days.
She opens her eyes and noticed a box with a yellow ribbon on the table. She opens it and sees the baby boots with a small binky on top that says “I love daddy”. She was gonna tell him tonight. Give him the box. After all the problems they had experienced, all the pain, something positive to look forward to. Their future, together, a family.
She closes the box again and throws it in the trash. Like he had done with her heart.
The next hour she spends sitting on the floor of her shower, crying, letting the hot stream pour over her. The pain is unbearable. She cries herself to sleep that night and takes the next day off. Luckily it’s a Friday so she’ll have the weekend to think.
She cries the entire Friday and cries herself to sleep again. Same on Saturday. She can’t function, she’s so broken it physically hurts. On Sunday morning she wakes up, completely drained, and out of tears.
Due to all the issues with the detective’s exam and Tim’s disappearance she didn’t even notice she was late. Three positive pregnancy tests later she made an appointment with her gynaecologist. A transvaginal ultrasound confirmed she was already 10 weeks along.
She takes the pic of her ultrasound from her nightstand and looks at it.
“It’s just you and me now, baby. But don’t worry, you’re loved.”
She quickly puts it away when hearing Tamara’s key opening the front door.
15 minutes later she hears her bedroom door open and an extremely worried Tamara standing there with the box with the yellow ribbon in her hands.
“What happened?”
Lucy just looks at her, knowing she looks like hell, eyes swollen from all the crying, skin white from lack of food.
“Tim broke up with me. And I’m pregnant.”
She immediately feels Tamara’s arms holding her tight while the tears start rolling down her cheeks again.
“Tell me everything, honey.”
A couple of hours later, when she has cleaned herself up and Tamara forced a smoothie down her throat, Lucy starts to feel a little bit better. Her heart is still aching but she feels more grounded.
“I’ve decided not to move.”
“No, you can’t do that. You deserve your independence.”
“Lucy, will you listen to me now.” Tamara has a resolved look on her face and an extremely determined voice. “You’ve taken care of me when I needed you, now I will do the same. That’s what sisters are for. I love you and will help you through this. I will help you during your pregnancy and when the baby comes. Once I finish college and the baby will be big enough to express their opinion, I can move out, but I will not leave you like this.”
“Tamara, you have your own life to live.”
“This is my life, Lucy. I want this. I’m gonna be such an amazing aunt. That kid is going to steal cars before it’s even 4 years old.” she says with a smile on her face which makes Lucy smile as well. Her first smile since that horrible Thursday when her world came crashing down.
“So, what’s the plan? Are you going back to work tomorrow or taking more time off?
“I can’t afford to. I need to safe as many days as possible for when the baby comes.”
“Are you going to tell him?” Tamara asks hesitantly.
“Eventually. After the first trimester. There is still a chance I might lose the baby. But I don’t want to lose it. I’m looking forward to meeting them. I’m terrified, but excited at the same time, if you know what I mean.”
“If you’ll give that baby half the love you gave me, you’ll be an amazing mom.”
Lucy looks up at the young woman with tenderness in her eyes.
“Thank you. That means so much. Would you like to come to my 3 month appointment at the obstetrician?”
“I’d love to.”
And now we’ll need to do some planning, because my life has just been turned upside down.
Later that night in bed, Lucy can’t sleep. She thinks about everything that has happened to her over the past years, since she became a cop. How she sacrificed her career for Tim, how he made her believe they were worth it and then dumping her when she sacrificed herself again for him.
Not only Tim, though. She thought about her “family” at Mid-Wilshire and the more she thought about it, the angrier she got. How she was always there for everyone, helping, breaking laws. How she had helped Wesley when he screwed up so badly only for him to get mad at her when she shot that dangerous criminal. She remembered sitting all alone in a hospital room while her so-called family was standing outside. No one bothered to come and check if she was ok, not even Nolan, who was supposed to be her union representative.
All of them used her when it was convenient, but when she needed them, they weren’t there.
Her sadness was being replaced by anger, anger and fury. Now she had a new family she needed protecting, protecting from them. Her baby and Tamara. And she would make sure none of them would ever hurt them.
