Drowning in Saturn

Summary:

Yesterday, something had happened that prevented Rudy and Snap from going to Chalklantis. Whatever this something was, as Penny notes, has also caused them to start acting… strange.

(Or: a continuation of the episode My Big Fat Chalk Wedding. Specifically Penny witnessing the aftermath.)

Notes:

So, I watched My Big Fat Chalk Wedding last month. That episode permanently altered my brain chemistry (in a good way)

I recommend you watch that episode before reading this though the events of the episode are summarized at one point here

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Rudy was hanging out at Penny’s house. This was the day after he and Snap planned to visit the lost continent of Chalklantis. “So, how was Chalklantis?” Penny asked. “Oh. Uh… we didn’t find it. We couldn’t. Something had happened, so we decided to go look for it at another time.” Rudy said. “What happened?” Penny asked. “It’s a… long story. I’ll explain later.” Rudy said. It was hard to see, but it almost looked like he was blushing. Whatever had happened was probably pretty great. Rudy got up and pulled out the magic chalk. “I’m gonna head to ChalkZone. Wanna come with me?” He asked. “Sure!” Penny said as Rudy approached the blackboard. He drew a circle that transformed into a portal. He and Penny went through the portal and landed in ChalkZone.

“Hey, where’s Snap?” Penny asked. “Not sure. He’ll probably show up soon, th-ACK!” Rudy said before a certain someone tackled him, causing him to fall on the ground. “Speak of the Devil!” Rudy said as he saw Snap lying on top of him. “Hi, Rudy!” Snap said. The absolute joy in his voice when he said Rudy’s name was not something Penny had heard before. Snap’s arms were wrapped around Rudy, too. “Penny’s right here!” Rudy giggled. Snap noticed Penny standing right next to them, and his cheerful expression faded a little. “Hey, Penny.” Snap said as he let go of Rudy and helped him get up, though they were now holding hands. “So uh, buckette, what brings you here?” Snap asked. “Rudy asked if I wanted to come with him. Why did you want to come here, Rudy?” Penny said. “I… guess I just wanted to hang out with Snap.” Rudy said. Penny noticed Rudy’s grip on Snap’s hand seemed to tighten when he said that. “You wanted to see me, huh? Then let’s go!” Snap said before running off, bringing Rudy with him. Penny quickly followed suit.

The trio ran through the hills for a bit, with Penny being the only one who wasn’t laughing, when they heard a shout. “What’s going on over there?” Penny said as she stopped and turned to the location the shout came from. Responsible Reggie was holding the Doofi in his arms while running from a green car filled with people. “You can’t run and you can’t hide, let Bobby Sue be your bride!” the people in the car sang as they chased Responsible Reggie. “Marrying someone I barely know isn’t responsible!” Responsible Reggie shouted back at the family. “Great gumballs, those are the Schwatts!” Snap said. “The Schwatts?” Penny asked. “They’re a family of zoners obsessed with marrying off their daughter, Bobby Sue.” Rudy explained. “Bobby Sue? Isn’t that a girl from our school?” Penny asked. “Yep. Last I saw her, she was after the real Reggie. Seemed to rub off on her chalk clone.” Rudy said. “I should go help him.” Penny said as she ran off to save Responsible Reggie. “Good luck. We had a run-in with that family yesterday, and it was not pretty. We’d rather stay away from them.” Snap said.

“Responsible Reggie!” Penny said as she caught up to him. “Hello, Penny. These people are being very irresponsible!” Responsible Reggie said as he ran. “Maybe I could draw the family to distract them?” Doofus Rudy asked. “Um, no.” Penny said. “Maybe we could-“ Doofus Penny said before the real Penny interrupted her. “We are not doing any plan you come up with.” The real Penny said blankly. Suddenly, Responsible Reggie tripped, sending the Doofi flying. The Schwatts’ car screeched to a halt. The family then climbed out. “He doesn’t want to marry you.” Penny said. “It’s just not responsible!” Responsible Reggie said. “Darling, responsibility shouldn’t get in the way of love!” Bobby Sue said. “But I don’t love you! I hardly know you!” Responsible Reggie said. “You’ll get to know and love me after we get married!” Bobby Sue said as she approached Responsible Reggie.

Then the Doofi ran up to him. “Hi! Can I draw you? I’m a great artist!” Doofus Rudy said while waving to Bobby Sue. “You?! I want nothing to do with you!” Bobby Sue said as she crossed her arms. “The real Rudy did say he and Snap met Bobby Sue before…” Penny thought out loud. “Well, I’ll marry you if you let him draw you!” Responsible Reggie said. “He’s not even the Rudy you ran into!” Doofus Penny added. “Not worth it! I want nothing to do with that f—“ Bobby Sue started to say as she was dragged back into the car. Whatever word she was going to call Rudy was interrupted by the car driving off. “Well, that takes care of her.” Penny said. “Thank you, Doofus Rudy, for saving me! That was very responsible of you!” Responsible Reggie said. “Why, thank you!” Doofus Rudy said. “Well, I’m gonna head back.” The real Penny said as she ran back to the hill her friends were on.

Meanwhile, once Penny was gone, Rudy looked at the tree nearby on the hill they were on. “I’m gonna take a nap.” Rudy said. He let go of Snap’s hand before walking to the tree and sitting against it. “Hey! Let me join in!” Snap said. Rudy giggled before spreading his arms out. “Alright. Come over here.” He said. Snap walked up to him before dropping to his knees. Rudy then embraced him, and they quietly sat together under the tree. Rudy eventually dozed off, but Snap was still awake, quietly listening to Rudy’s heartbeat. Everything that wasn’t under that tree seemed to melt into nothingness, and time felt like it was slowed to a stop. It was as if they were the only things that existed, and the only noise that could be heard was the rhythmic beating of Rudy’s heart.

“I’m back!” Penny said, breaking the trance. “Rudy, wake up, Penny’s back.” Snap said while gently shaking him. Rudy quickly woke up, and smiled when he saw Snap in his arms. Then he noticed Penny. “Hey, Penny! Did you help Responsible Reggie?” Rudy asked. “Well, actually, Bobby Sue left when she saw Doofus Rudy. Apparently she hates you as much as you guys seem to hate her.” Penny said. She tried to ignore the giggling the two boys were making while looking at each other. She assumed the run-in with the Schwatts was what prevented their visit to Chalklantis, but that didn’t explain their weird change in behavior. “I think I’ll head back to the portal.” Penny said. “Alrighty then!” Rudy said as Snap helped him up, causing them to be holding hands again. “To the portal!” Snap said as the three ran through the hills back to the portal.

At the portal, Penny was about to step through the portal when Rudy began to talk. “Thanks for coming with me. It’s nice you went and helped Responsible Reggie like that. You said you didn’t contribute much, but I bet the Doofi would have tried something stupid if you weren’t around.” He said. While Rudy was talking to Penny, Snap looked at Rudy’s hand, specifically the one that was holding his own. A mischievous smile formed on his face that Rudy didn’t notice, but Penny did. “Anyway, I hope you have a nice— oh!” Rudy said before feeling Snap kiss his hand. He blushed and looked at Snap, who simply smiled back. Then they both giggled. “You know what? Tell me.” Penny said. “Tell you… what?” Rudy asked. “Why you two are acting like… children born on Sundays.” Penny said. “What does that even mean?!” Snap asked.

“Let me start over. Yesterday, something happened, seemingly involving the Schwatts, that prevented you two from going to Chalklantis.“ Penny said. “Yes, the Schwatts were involved. So?” Snap said. “However, whatever happened that day has also caused you two to experience a strange change in behavior. I want to know exactly what went on during your encounter with the Schwatts, and why you’re now superglued together.” Penny said. “Sure, we can tell you!” Rudy said as he pulled out the magic chalk and began to draw three chairs. Penny grabbed a chair and sat down. Rudy and Snap then sat in their own chairs, with them still holding hands. “Y’know, Rudy, you could’ve just drawn two chairs.” Snap said. “But where would you… ah.” Rudy said before realizing what Snap was implying. “Please, just tell me the story.” An exasperated Penny said.

“Alright! It all began that morning, when the real Bobby Sue was crying after she broke her art project. I gave a carrot i had packed for lunch to her to fix it, and she suddenly got this huge crush on me. Then the bell rang and I headed to class. I think Bobby Sue might have decided to draw her ideal wedding to me, but the drawings got erased into ChalkZone before she could draw the groom.” Rudy began. “When Rudy and I were getting ready to visit Chalklantis, the Schwatts came up to us. Chalk Bobby Sue wanted to marry Rudy and have me be the ‘best man’, whatever that is. They also wanted me to be a wedding prop… because I’m blue? I don’t think that makes sense.“ Snap added. “Oh yeah. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. That’s a poem about things given to a bride for her wedding.” Penny said.

“Anyway, they threw us in their car and began to drive off to the chapel. I drew an ejection button which launched me and Snap out of the car. We landed in a giant football glove, but the Schwatts were driving towards us. I attempted to trap them in a giant present box, but they escaped quickly and tied me up with the ribbon, meaning I couldn’t use the magic chalk.” Rudy said. “Now we get to the interesting part. I came up with a plan to save him. I gathered up our friends, we got dressed up, and we objected to the wedding while claiming to be Rudy’s brides.” Snap said. “What? How would that cause you guys to act like… that.” Penny asked. Rudy cleared his throat before speaking. “We’re getting to that. Snap’s plan worked, and the Schwatts ran off. One of them yanked me out of my ribbon, sending me spinning, and then…”

Rudy spun around for a bit before falling on one of the seats. He felt dizzy as he stood up and tried to process his surroundings. “Hey.” He heard a voice say. He turned around to see Snap standing in front of him. There was a reason he was in a dress, wearing a veil, and holding a bouquet, but for a brief moment, Rudy forgot about that. He felt like his face was going to melt off, and time seemed to stop dead in its tracks. Every single memory of Snap seemed to play at once. “I… I do.” Rudy said. “What?” Snap said. Rudy broke free of his trance as he remembered what had happened earlier. “Sorry. Just… forgot.” Rudy said. “Forgot what?” Snap asked. “The reason you’re dressed like a bride is because you were saving me from a forced wedding… and you weren’t the only one to do that.” Rudy said as he looked around.

“You… thought we were actually getting married?” Snap asked. “Yeah.” Rudy said quietly. Snap smiled. “Well, the way you reacted makes me think you like that idea.” He said. “Well… yeah.” Rudy said.“You know what? I like that idea too. And so…” Snap said as he looked around before tossing his bouquet to the side, with it landing in Bathtub Granny’s tub. “Who am I gonna marry? My bathtub?” Bathtub Granny snarked as she picked up the bouquet. Snap then pulled Rudy into a hug. “I do.” he said. “I mean, why not? Congratulations.” The preacher, who was still standing there, said. A few moments passed before someone spoke. “You can have this back!” Bathtub Granny said as she threw Snap’s bouquet back at him. It hit him directly in the back of the head. “Hey! Easy on the bride!” Snap said as he picked up the bouquet.

“I should head back.” Rudy said. He pulled up Snap’s veil for a moment to kiss him before running out of the church. “Come back here!” Snap playfully said as he started chasing after his now-husband. The others then followed suit.

“So then we all met up at the portal to say goodbye, and then Rudy erased the portal.” Snap said. “You’re… married?” Penny asked. “Yep.” Snap said. “Okay.” Penny said as she got up and went through the portal. The last thing she said before erasing the portal was “I’m not upset, just surprised.” After the portal was gone, the newlyweds got out of their seats and started walking together. After a while, Snap stopped. “What’s wrong?” Rudy asked. “Well, when recalling the events of yesterday, I realized something.” Snap said while smiling. “What did you realize?” Rudy asked. “You were kind of in a rush when you kissed me back then. But right now there’s nothing really important you need to get to.” Snap said. “Ah. Sorry about that. Let me make it up for you.” Rudy said. The feeling from when they were cuddling under the tree earlier returned as they kissed. But this time, they were both awake to experience it.

Notes:

Shoutout to Bobby Sue Schwatt for making Snudy canon you’re a real one for that

Anyways FUN FACTS 💥

1. The fic is titled “Elephant Killer” in my notes as a reference to the phrase “enough sugar to kill an elephant” since it’s a fluff fic

2. The “drowning” part of the title is a reference to the fact Atlantis/Chalklantis is underwater. The “Saturn” part is a reference to the fact this fic takes place on a Saturday and also the fact Saturn has rings.

3. The “Children born on Sundays” line is a reference to the poem Monday’s Child.

4. If you don’t understand what Snap meant when he said “you could’ve just drawn two chairs”, he was implying that he’d sit on Rudy’s lap. Nothing too weird.

5. There was originally going to be a bit about Snap mentioning he’d look good in a dress and Rudy agreeing, to Penny’s confusion, but I couldn’t find the opportunity to add it in.
