The Earth was scorched, and the scent of blood hung in the air. Seita searched the sky for a kamikaze long after the final one whirred past. It further strained his neck, which ached from the weight of Setsuko on his back.
For a moment, he thought, things would be easier if she wasn’t here. But he didn’t dwell on that while he crawled through the ruins in search of their mother. He swallowed the bile rising in his throat as his eyes met those of corpses scattered across the ashes.
He’d taken the world before the war for granted.
