Soraiya surveyed the grounds, feeling restless as aggressive alpha pheromones and desperate omega pheromones filled the air.
Ugh.
She wrinkled her snout. She had presented as an Alpha many moons ago, much to her family's surprise. They had assumed she was a Beta, given her even temperament and neither dominant nor submissive nature.
Well, to be honest, she didn't feel much difference. Aside from heightened senses, presenting hadn't really changed her or how she acted.
Soraiya snapped to attention when the Pack leader bellowed with authority, ordering them to their places. She sighed and moved to her assigned booth, though she'd say it was more like a cage.
The gate slammed shut behind her, locking her in. It was starting—her first mating run. This long-standing tradition required alphas to chase their desired omegas through a forest, proving they were capable hunters and suited to provide for their chosen mate.
As Soraiya stood in her cage, she could hear the growls and smell the pheromones of neighboring alphas being shoved up her nose. They rattled around their cages restlessly, leering at the group of omegas gathering not far from the cages.
The growls and hoots grew louder as the omegas approached. It was the pre-run phase, where the omegas were allowed to come near the cages to scent and entice the eligible alphas.
Not that it would take much, considering all the alphas were in rut. Still, Soraiya sat calmly in her cage. While her rut made her want to broadcast her pheromones to all the delicious omegas outside, she herself didn't feel it was necessary.
A soft, melodic woof rang out in front of her cage.
Soraiya's head shot up at the sound. It was a silver-haired omega.
An omega was in front of her cage—why?
Her piercing blue eyes stared intently at Soraiya, calculating.
Soraiya stayed put, stunned by the beautiful omega before her.
Wait, what? No, no, no, this is the rut talking, Soraiya thought, shaking her head.
The omega curled her fingers, making a come-hither motion. Soraiya tilted her head.
Is she asking me to come closer? Surely not, right?
Soraiya pointed at herself.
Me?
The omega rolled her eyes before pointing at her and nodding.
Yes, you.
Soraiya stood up, walking cautiously toward the cage's small opening.
Oh God.
The omega's scent hit her right in the face, washing over her like waves of the sea. She smelled divine, a delicious fruity citrus scent that left Soraiya salivating for more.
She knew what that blend of scent meant: this omega was interested in her.
Soraiya shifted on her legs, wafting her own pheromones in return. Her scent rolled out in waves, signaling her interest as well.
______
Vylema looked at the alpha in front of her with curious eyes, and perhaps even amusement.
This alpha was different. The other alphas were posturing, growling, and rattling their cages aggressively at the omegas.
But this one sat so very still in her cage.
Even then, Vylema could tell this alpha was powerful. She observed the alpha's sharp, blood-red eyes and her large frame that towered over her.
Come here.
Vylema gestured to the alpha. Oh, how she hoped the alpha would smell as good as she’d imagined.
The alpha tilted her head.
Me?
Vylema rolled her eyes. Is this alpha for real?
Yes, you!
The alpha stood up and made her way to the cage door, stopping short of the small opening that was only big enough to fit a head through.
Vylema stared for a moment, waiting for the alpha to do or say something. But the alpha stayed silent, wide-eyed, and with an open muzzle.
Vylema sighed internally and took charge, broadcasting her interest to the dim-witted alpha.
I like you!
The alpha stood there, starstruck, for a moment before snapping out of her daze and broadcasting her own scent of interest.
A smoky pine scent that sent shivers down Vylema’s spine. She could feel her heat growing more powerful by the second, her body responding to this stupid alpha.
The chief’s horn rang out across the grounds, signaling that the run would soon commence.
Vylema gazed at the alpha once more before sighing to herself. Her inner omega was set on this one.
Come and get me, alpha.
Vylema rumbled softly, a gentle trill that caught the alpha's attention. The alpha perked up, her ears standing at attention.
Cute.
Another blast of the chief's horn sounded.
The run was starting.
_________
Soraiya buzzed with excitement, her energy ramping up as she prepared to chase her soon-to-be mate.
Bang!
The gates dropped, and the omegas darted into the dark cover of the forest.
Soraiya waited the customary five seconds for their head start before breaking into a full sprint, following her omega's scent trail. It was faint, mixed with the scent of other wolves and obscured by the rain, but that didn't deter Soraiya.
She was one of the tribe's best hunters; a little rain would not stop her.
Soraiya's powerful legs propelled her through the dense underbrush, her heightened senses guiding her as she navigated the forest. The faint citrus scent of her omega lingered in the air, growing stronger with each stride.
Branches snapped underfoot, and the sounds of other alphas in pursuit echoed around her. But Soraiya's focus was unwavering, her instincts sharp. She leapt over fallen logs and weaved through trees, her eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of her target.
Ahead, she caught a glimpse of silver hair darting through the trees. Her heart raced, adrenaline surging as she pushed herself harder. The omega's scent grew more intense, urging her forward.
Suddenly, the omega appeared in a small clearing, glancing back just as Soraiya burst through the foliage. Their eyes locked, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. The omega's blue eyes were filled with a mix of determination and curiosity.
Soraiya's muscles coiled, ready to pounce, but she held back, allowing the omega to make the next move. The omega hesitated for a heartbeat before turning and dashing deeper into the forest.
With a growl of determination, Soraiya resumed the chase. She could hear the omega's rapid breaths and see the flicker of silver hair through the trees. The thrill of the hunt coursed through her veins, urging her on.
They raced through the forest, the distance between them shrinking with each passing second. The omega's scent was intoxicating, a beacon guiding Soraiya through the darkness.
Finally, in a burst of speed, Soraiya closed the gap. She lunged forward, her powerful muscles propelling her forward. She reached out, her fingers brushing the omega's arm as she caught up.
The omega stumbled slightly, glancing back with a mix of surprise and acceptance. Soraiya's heart pounded in her chest, the intensity of the moment washing over her. She leaned in, her nose brushing against the omega's neck, inhaling deeply.
The omega's scent was even more potent up close, a tantalizing blend of citrus and warmth. Soraiya's instincts roared to life, but she maintained control, gently nuzzling the omega.
_______
Vylema hummed softly, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. The alpha had caught her, but she wasn't going to make it that easy. With a swift movement, she flipped the alpha onto her back, stunning her.
Before the alpha could react, Vylema darted off once more, making a break for the cave she knew was not far from them. The thrill of the chase reignited within her, and she pushed herself harder, her heart pounding in her chest.
Soraiya laid on the ground for a moment, stunned by the omega's unexpected move. A slow grin spread across her face as she realized Vylema was playing with her. With renewed determination, she leaped to her feet and took off after the omega.
Vylema's laughter echoed through the forest as she ran, her silver hair a beacon in the dim light. She could hear Soraiya gaining on her, the alpha's footsteps growing louder with each passing second. The cave was just ahead, a dark opening nestled among the trees.
She darted inside, her breath coming in quick gasps as she pressed herself against the cool stone walls. She could hear Soraiya's approach, the alpha's smoky pine scent filling the cave entrance.
Soraiya entered the cave cautiously, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. She spotted Vylema pressed against the wall, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief. Soraiya approached slowly, her muscles tense and ready.
"You’re not making this easy," Soraiya murmured, a playful tone in her voice.
Vylema's lips curled into a smile. "Who said I was easy?"
With that, Soraiya closed the distance between them, her eyes never leaving Vylema’s. The omega’s scent was intoxicating, filling her senses and driving her forward. She reached out, her fingers brushing against Vylema's arm, and the omega didn’t pull away.
Soraiya leaned in, her lips hovering near Vylema's ear. "Caught you," she whispered.
Vylema shivered, her resolve wavering for a moment. But she quickly recovered, meeting Soraiya's gaze with a defiant glint in her eyes. "Not yet," she teased, slipping out of Soraiya's grasp and darting deeper into the cave.
Soraiya growled softly, the sound reverberating through the cave. She chased after Vylema, her body moving with purpose. The omega was fast, but Soraiya was determined. This game of cat and mouse was exhilarating, and she relished every moment of it.
Finally, they reached the back of the cave, the walls closing in around them. Vylema turned to face Soraiya, her breath coming in quick, shallow gasps. Soraiya slowed her pace, approaching the omega with a predatory grace.
Their eyes locked, and in that moment, the chase was over. Soraiya reached out, cupping Vylema's face in her hands. The omega leaned into her touch, their breaths mingling as they stood close.
"You’re mine, omega" Soraiya whispered, her voice filled with a mix of possession and affection. Vylema nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips. "And you’re mine, alpha."
