It was an honor to lay with a woman and it was an honor to give her a child. Mizuno had been bed by many a woman and many a woman had become pregnant after visiting him. He was well liked, as the children born were healthy and strong and had a beauty to them, like he did, and he was a fine lover. He was a fine lover, but he sometimes wondered what happened to the children, how they lived when he saw them playing on the street. Were the girls smart and strong? Were the boys handsome and loved? (And he feared for them, more than the girls, because not every mother let her son swing a sword and chose his own bed.) He often wondered this, but it did not matter. Children always belonged to the woman and the father was but a single moment.
He did wonder, though, what it would have been like keep a couple and to see who they became.
