Chapter 1: Robert-STAY ALIVE!!

Summary:

A building collapse traps Battalion Chief Robert Sullivan in the rubble...his PASS beeped until
it DIDN'T and Chief Ripley ordered some search and rescue teams inside to find him...

Chapter Text

STATIONS 19; 23; 42; and 88 are on scene for a four-alarm in which an explosive device brought down the structure.
Crossover with Rosewood TV.

-------

Inside the collapsed building Jack Gibson (re-instated as Lieutenant) led four members of 19's Search and Rescue
team; '88', '23', and '42' search the remaining floors and basement area...Lucas Ripley, from the command center
activated his comms: "Perez, have you found him?" [static] "Negative, Sir"...
Bishop from '23' and Jefferson from '88', and Lopez from '42' report the same...

GIBSON: "CHIEF SULLIVAN-CALL OUT!" [nothing]. "Miller-can you check left; Powell go right."

POWELL: "GIBSON; the building's about to come down around our heads!"

"I'm not gonna tell you again, Powell-get movin'-NOW!!" Grumbling, the insubordinate firefighter moved off.

Gibson's radio crackles:

RIPLEY: "Command to Gibson; is there any sign of Sullivan?"

GIBSON: "Negative command"-[a section of roof collapsed, and the structure shook]

POWELL: "GIBSON; I'M GETTING OUT!"

GIBSON: "NEGATIVE, POWELL-REMAIN IN PLACE UNTIL COMMAND CALLS IT!!"

POWELL: "Fuck this!" and she ended contact.

A man and woman wearing hard hats and City of Seattle Engineers across both front and back approached Ripley. The woman,
Kat Graham said "Chief Ripley. This structure is dangerously unstable. I'm told that your man's 'PASS' has been silent for the
past 15 minutes...our recommendation is to abort the search and rescue...and transition to...to..."

"Search and Recover," Ripley finished. Then he said "NO. The PASS may have been damaged...or"-

"Lucas," Frankel said quietly. "Sullivan's GONE. We should call the others out."

Hearing the discussion over her comms, Vic Hughes uttered "Oh, God!"

With a heavy heart, Ripley relayed the order to Jack Gibson: "Command to Gibson. Abandon...abandon S 'n R efforts. Get your
people out."

In disbelief, Gibson asked that he repeat the command, which Lucas did. "Chief-request permission to continue the search."

"Negative, Lieutenant. Everyone out. Expedite."

The city engineers began directing their direct reports and machine operators to start their part of the operation; in the meantime
Kate Powell raced over to the Aid Station, unable to stop herself from delivering the news to Andy Herrera first-hand (none of the
personnel at the AS are wearing helmets and therefore had not heard the order to withdraw). "So, someone's back on the market,
eh, Herrera?"

"Captain Herrera is what you meant to say, correct, Firefighter Powell? And what do you mean by that improper
and insubordinate remark about my private life?"

The pinch-faced Powell smirked nastily. "Sure. Whatever. I only meant that you're free to 'run through' The Emerald and Joe's
Bar now that Sullivan's worm food-the way you used to...oh, SORRY-CHIEF Sullivan."

Andy jumped to her feet, "WHAT?! WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SAY?!

Warren said, "Speak up, Powell-where's Chief Sullivan?!"

"He's GONE. There is no Chief Sullivan."

Without a word, Andy grabbed her helmet and 'turn-out' coat before sprinting toward the command vehicles. Five feet from
the assembled group she yelled "WHERE'S ROBERT! WHY HAVE RESCUE OPS BEEN SUSPENDED?!"

Frankel answered "Protocol, Captain. There have been no signs of life for more than twenty-five minutes. The decision to
call the team out was not made capriciously: they haven't located him, and the city engineers have deemed the structure
unsound. I'm sorry, Andy."

Struggling into her coat and oxygen tank, Andy put on her helmet and announced "I'm going in!"

A chorus of 'NO YOU WILL NOT!' and 'GET BACK HERE HERRERA!" did not deter her; "Me VALLE "¡ she called
while running toward the collapsed building...she had almost reached the rubble-littered front entrance when Gibson cried

"CHEIF RIPLEY-WE FOUND HIM...HIS PULSE IS WEAK BUT HE'S ALIVE! REQUEST A STRETCHER AND SOME MORE BODIES!"

"Warren, Miller, Finch, and Calderon-back inside-HERRERA-DON'T YOU MOVE!"
