Work Text:
Scully had only known of this Diana Fowley for less than 48 hours. But it’s quite clear she’s had quite the impact on her partner’s life, and for that, she can’t help but be curious about their past history.
What she definitively knows is she’s tall, thin, a brunette…and clearly had an intimate past with Mulder. She bristles silently at her desk at that last thought.
For the past five or six years, a past lover has never come up in conversation. Sure there had been some interested parties: Detective White, Melissa Ephesians…Dr. Bambi. But Mulder’s follow-through with these women was practically non-existent.
A time, early in their partnership, she thought maybe there was something there between them. But he had made it abundantly clear that the work comes first. So she left him to his magazines and video tapes that weren’t his.
But this Diana person was different. His whole demeanor changes when he talks about her or when she’s around. He’s more relaxed, jovial…more trusting. That last one almost gets her since he’s engrained it in her mind to trust no one. Besides him.
She’s not so sure she trusts this “Diana”, either.
Just then, Mulder waltzes into the office on his cell phone. “Yeah, seven sounds great. I’ll meet you there. Talk soon.”
He sits at his desk with his feet up, lost in thought.
“What’s at seven?”
“Huh?”
“Rendezvous you just secured for seven?”
“Oh! Oh, that’s nothing. Just made plans to meet up with Diana to catch up on some things.”
Diana. Before she’s able to stop herself, she scoffs.
“Problem?”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“I’m fine, Mulder. You can do whatever you want on your free time.”
“Sounds like you’re a little upset. Liiikkeee you might be jealous?”
“Please. Why would I care?”
“I don’t know, I’m just calling it how I see it.”
Scully stands from her workspace and starts packing up her things for the day, unwilling to be a part of this harassment.
“I suggest you get your eyes checked. Have a good night. With whatever her name is.”
She doesn’t even wait to hear Mulder’s response. She’s out the door.
Once she’s in the elevator, a small sob escapes. She leans her head back against the wall, trying to keep the surprise tears from escaping.
Turns out she does care. A lot.
