Work Text:
perhaps-
in another world-
we sit on the couch together
sharing an orange
perhaps we go out onto the fire escape
to watch as the sun slips away out of the sky
perhaps i wake up next to you in the morning-
light slanting in through the window-
and we are happy…
They were happy. They were the kind of couple that everyone envied, the kind who took long walks on the beach during the sunset (even during the wintertime), the kind who were always together, the kind of couple that everyone’s sure is going to get married and have kids and move somewhere far, far away.
David would ask himself where they went wrong, ask himself why everything fell apart, but he knows. He knows that he’s the one who messed up. He knows he’s the one who became too codependent. Hell, he was the one who suggested the breakup.
“It’s just not healthy, Jack,” he had said, trying not to let the tears fall, “For either of us. It’s not fair to you.”
Jack had just looked at him, with the saddest smile David had ever seen in his life, and nodded slowly.
“You’re right,” he had said, “I mean, I don’t want to break up, and you’re, like…” he paused. “You’re totally breaking my heart here, but you’re…you’re right. We should.”
“I love you,” David had assured him. “I do. I hope you find someone who…y’know. Is right for you.”
“I thought you were right for me…”
“I did too…”
Jack had gotten up. Grabbed his jacket. Opened the door. Paused. And then:
“Well. Don’t be a stranger, Dave.”
And he had kissed David one last time, and then he was gone.
…and we never broke each other’s hearts.
