Work Text:
The three were careful not to let their relationship show in public, but in private, it was a different matter entirely. As long as they knew no one would see, little affections could be shared whenever they were needed.
And even months, years into their relationship, Cesare found that Angelo still had the power to surprise him. It was, had always been, one of the things Cesare loved most about him -- as much as he loved being in control, knowing as much as possible about everyone else's secrets, Angelo had a way of sneaking up on him, putting him in a situation out of his control, yet where he knew he was safe. A sudden arm around his waist, a kiss on the cheek, or even just that heart-melting smile -- Angelo was the only one who could give Cesare that sensation of floating in the air, untethered from all solid forms, yet perfectly safe.
And Miguel -- if Angelo gave him a few seconds of floating in secure bliss, Miguel gave him the sense of security that if he fell, he would always be caught. When Cesare would wrap his fingers around a problem, and let it grow heavier and heavier in his hands, and in his mind, until the tendrils took root and made the ground spin beneath him; when his theories of this foe's possible motivations, or that potential ally's planned next step, grew into a tangle of vines large and powerful enough to lift his body off the ground and carry him away, it was Miguel's hands on his shoulders, Miguel's elbow or knee nudging him, Miguel's warm breath against his neck, that would bring him back to earth.
Was Miguel surprised, then, when Angelo would get Cesare flustered? He never seemed like it, as he cast that sharp smile over the pair he loved so much. But he was skilled at hiding his emotions, after all.
Outside, at a distance from their entourage, and from any other human souls, just the three of them, walking along a field just before sunset. Something in the distance caught Miguel's eye, and in the peaceful atmosphere of the afternoon, his lost himself in gazing that way, handsome, heroic, his cape billowing gently in the wind.
After watching him a bit, Cesare and Angelo turned to each other, with Cesare almost ready to lean in for a kiss, but he paused -- something in Angelo's smile, in that lift of his eyebrows... he lifted a finger to his mouth, teasingly, then, silently as possible, went towards Miguel, leaving Cesare behind, smiling and watching to see what would happen.
It couldn't be that Miguel didn't hear him coming -- perhaps he just wasn't expecting contact so soon -- wasn't expecting Angelo's arms around his waist from behind, and a sweet kiss on his cheek.
Cesare watched and laughed as Miguel caught his balance, and pulled Angelo into an embrace, and a kiss... but he was too far away to see their faces clearly. Only Angelo got to see Miguel's surprised, flustered face, and his smile as he found his grounding and pulled him close.
