Swiss was never the kind of ghoul to get attached. He swore he’d never make that mistake. Sure, he cared about the other ghouls. But he made sure that those relationships were always a no strings attached kind of fling.
That was, until Rain was summoned.
Swiss could recall everything about that day. The way his heart beat out of his chest as Rain’s kind eyes met his across the room for the first time. How Rain barely spoke that day but when he did, his soft voice sent heat down Swiss’ spine.
Swiss avoided Rain at first. He didn’t like the way his heart would race when Rain was strumming his bass. Or the way his hands got sweaty when Rain’s eyes would glance in his direction. Or the way his mouth got dry when Rain stuck a guitar pick in his mouth.
Swiss wasn’t familiar with these feelings. He never struggled to find the words to say when speaking to any other ghoul. Conversation came easily to him. But with Rain, he stuttered on his words. So he pushed those feelings down for as long as he could. It’s safe to say he didn’t last long.
He memorized everything about Rain. How his relaxed curls bounced when he laughed. How his gentle, blue eyes sparkled when he smiled. How his small frame moved around. How he hummed his favorite songs while cooking the ghouls dinner. How he stuck the tip of his tongue out while learning new songs on the bass. The list in Swiss’ mind went on and on.
And when he was alone in his room, Swiss’ thoughts often wandered. He imagined grabbing a fistful of Rain’s curls. Or moving his hands across Rain’s small frame, pulling small noises from him. Or kissing the entirety of Rain as he sang for him. He wanted to know what Rain’s hands felt like on his body. He wanted to know what Rain looked like under him. He wanted to know what Rain tasted like.
He wanted Rain.
Of course he never told the other ghouls that.
But Rain knew.
Rain could see how Swiss would watch him from across the room and would glance away anytime Rain almost caught him. He noticed the small favors Swiss did for him, or the extra attention he received from the multi ghoul.
In fact, Rain would often direct his attention towards Swiss just to watch him melt. He knew the effect he had on Swiss and he loved every second of it. Most of the ghouls thought Rain was a pretty quiet ghoul who kept to himself. They weren’t wrong. Rain was generally quiet, but when given the opportunity, he could bring a ghoul to their knees in an instant. Swiss ended up learning that quickly.
It wasn’t long until Swiss was truly infatuated with Rain, the feeling ultimately being reciprocated. They snuck around the abbey together, hiding in lounges or corners of the library to show their affection towards one another. They weren’t keen on filling in the other ghouls about their new love.
But Rain knew that even though they hadn’t put a label to anything, he had Swiss wrapped around his finger. He had a list of pet names for him, which included dear, darling, love, handsome, and beautiful. When any one of those names were used, Swiss was sure to be putty in Rain’s hands. And Rain loved that attention, especially since it was from Swiss.
The other ghouls began to assume they had just gotten close. They knew Swiss never got attached to anyone so it surprised them to see him hanging on to every last word of Rain. That is, until they started hanging out in each other’s rooms no longer afraid of what the other ghouls thought.
Rain was often plagued with nightmares. Nightmares that woke him from the deepest sleep in a puddle of cold sweats. Nightmares that left him shaking and shivering almost afraid to open his eyes terrified of what might be in the dark surrounding him. Nightmares that he would never tell anyone about.
But now, he would suddenly wake with Swiss next to him, there to reassure him there was nothing in the dark. Swiss would help him change out of his sweaty clothes and pull him back to his chest. He would sing Rain’s favorite songs as Rain’s trembles would subside. Swiss would tuck Rain’s curls behind his ears and tell him everything was going to be okay while tracing small circles into the palms of his hands until he fell back asleep.
It wasn’t uncommon for the ghouls to spend nights in each other’s rooms, but Rain and Swiss were together almost every night. Tangled in each other’s embrace. Rain’s face tucked into Swiss’ neck. Tails wrapped tightly together as if someone would pull them apart at any moment. Swiss often purred through the night showing his extreme content with the position he was in.
Many days, Swiss wondered what they were. He couldn’t shake the feeling of worry that he would become nothing to Rain. Swiss had many encounters with other ghouls who he had pushed away when they got attached. What if Rain did the same to him?
But then he reasoned with himself. Why would Rain pepper small kisses along his jawline while whispering his name to him? Why would Rain plan small picnics out in the forest for them when they had breaks from band practice? Why would Rain ask him about his day every single night? Because he cared.
But Swiss needed to hear it from Rain. Because he didn’t know what Rain saw in him. He didn’t think he deserved the affection he received.
And then why did he want to give that affection right back? After all the ghouls he had practically ghosted, why did this ghoul give him butterflies? Why was he driven mad by the thought of having that water ghoul in his bed, in his lap even?
So one day, when Rain arrived at Swiss’ room per their usual nights, he was met with Swiss curled up in bed with his back to the door, not a usual sight. Swiss always greeted him at the door with the biggest smile.
Rain had asked him what’s wrong worried he had done something to hurt his multi ghoul. Had someone else hurt him? He was determined to ease his mind.
It took some coaxing from Rain, but Swiss finally poured his heart out, every single thought. How he’d never felt like this. How he’d never been attached to anyone. How he could list any detail from the day Rain was summoned. How he noticed the small things about Rain. How he thought about Rain when he was alone. How he wanted him. He couldn’t stop himself. The words just kept flowing. Like a dam in his mind had finally burst and he couldn’t contain the feelings being spewed from his mouth.
He didn’t notice how Rain sat cross legged and listened intently to every word he had to share. He didn’t feel Rain’s thumb rubbing gentle patterns into his palms. He didn’t see how Rain’s eyes softened from worry to a mix of love and amusement as he poured his heart out. Rain found this endearing.
Rain stayed silent the whole time. Letting Swiss get all of his thoughts out. Rain knew of Swiss’ past and so it was honestly surprising to be hearing all of these words.
And Rain would be lying if he said he didn’t worry. He worried that Swiss would lose interest. He worried that Swiss would find another ghoul to spend his nights with. He worried that Swiss would ghost him like every other ghoul before him.
But the speech being given by Swiss before him erased all of those thoughts from his mind.
And when Rain didn’t reply right away, Swiss thought he had made a mistake. Was he wrong to be telling Rain all of this? He thought he finally found someone who he could actually love. Someone he could be his true self around. Someone who accepted every insecurity and flaw of his.
Did he just ruin what they had between them? Had Swiss finally lost his mind and fallen for someone? Why was this water ghoul driving him mad?
When Rain saw the doubtful look come upon Swiss, he was quick to react finally spewing his own feelings for the multi ghoul. Rain told him how he spotted Swiss on the first day he was at the clergy and got lost in his cheerful smile. He told him how much he admired Swiss’ talent for guitar and singing. He told him how he loved every single second he has spent with Swiss. But most importantly, he told Swiss he loved him.
Rain loved Swiss.
And when Swiss was able to gain his confidence back, he told Rain just how much he loved him too. There were many tears shed and it’s safe to say that was one of the best nights for those ghouls.
After that, they didn’t care who knew anymore. They walked around the clergy hand in hand. They kissed in the hallways. They cuddled in the living rooms. They even experimented in the library.
Mountain once caught them in the kitchen with Rain propped up on the counter, head thrown back, and Swiss on his knees. Sunshine found them pressed together, breathing heavily in a supply closet, Rain latched onto Swiss’ neck. All the ghouls at some point had discovered them in one location or another.
Even when the season of ghoul heat came around. The ghouls often took turns with each other whenever it was needed but not this time around. Rain and Swiss never strayed from each other’s sides. They were a bonded pair.
There were low moments in their relationship, as there are with any. Swiss sometimes got distant, letting the thoughts of how he didn’t deserve the love and affection from Rain seep into his mind. He felt that he had played with so many other ghouls’ hearts that he should receive the same treatment.
Rain didn’t mind reassuring him. He would tell Swiss how he wasn’t going anywhere and that he has loved him since the day he locked eyes with him. He would hold Swiss close and wipe the tears from his eyes before planting soft kisses all across his body.
Even with Swiss’ insecurities and Rain’s constant nightmares, they persevered. They were together and that’s all that mattered. They were in love and no one dared to come between them. It was Swiss and Rain against the world, flaws be damned.
