She hates assignments like this. There is no more info that a place and time. Being part of an exfil team for a covert intelligence agency will get you in dodgy situations, but waiting outside a jungle riddled with drug lords and their armies, for two agents, is not her idea of fun. Especially not if said agents are Macgyver and Dalton. They have a reputation.
‘Do you think they will be in time this time?’ Andre, the co-pilot asks?
Moorcroft, their pilot checks his watch. Again.
‘You know those two. But director Webber said that they would be here. And the info they are carrying is vital.’
‘Well, the window closes in exactly eight minutes.’
‘Eight more minutes it is.’
They wait but as the minutes tick away they look at each other, is this going to be a bust again? Moorcroft starts his pre-flight checklist.
‘Last minute started, Laura.’
‘I know, but we need to give them that last minute.’
The moment the last seconds are ticking away, there is movement in the greenery. Laura draws her gun and aims it at the movement. Out stumbles Jack Dalton, he is carrying Macgyver over his shoulders.
Laura and Andre immediately holster their guns and jump out f the helicopter. Jack slumps down in a grotesque movement, clearly at the end of his strength. Andre grabs Macgyver and drags him to the helicopter while Moorcroft starts the rotor. Laura puts her shoulder under Jack’s and supports him towards the helicopter where Andre already placed Mac on a stretcher and secured him. She helps Jack into a seat, fastening his seatbelt before she attaches her harness and gestures to take off while she places a head set on Jack and Mac. They are off in a smooth movement.
‘What happened?’ she asks Jack.
‘Mac was hit with a tranquilizer dart, I think. I couldn’t find any wounds.’
She nods and checks Mac’s pulse and breathing, but they are a fine, a bit on the slow side, but nothing to worry about. Just to make sure she starts an oxygen mask and an IV.
‘Are you alright?’
‘Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.’
‘Are you sure, you look a bit pale.’
Which isn’t that strange, seeing that Jack carried Mac through the jungle. So she grabs a sports drink, the one both men like and hands him the bottle, Jack immediately cracks the lid. She also hands him a cheese sandwich. Who knows when the last eat. And again, Jack wolves it down. The color returns to his face. Good. She checks on Mac again, but he is doing OK, there isn´t anything she can do right now, if he really is sedated, they will just have to wait until he wakes up.
Jack has closed his eyes and appears to be sleeping. Laura frowns. She knows these special forces guys can sleep anywhere any time, but Jack was still sipping his drink a moment ago.
‘Jack? Sorry to wake you, but… Jack?’
When he doesn´t respond, she gives him a shake and his head lolls to the side.
‘Shit! Moorcroft, get us asap to a secure hospital. Jack is injured. The ass didn´t say anything.’
She starts checking him out in the confines of the seatbelt, but quick enough she finds the wound in his back. He has been bleeding steadily and the seat is covered with it. She unfastens the seatbelt and lets him fall to the sight on the other seats, lifting his feet on the seats. She grabs a pressure bandage and as good and bad as she can, she tries to stop the bleeding.
‘What is that ETA Moorcroft?
‘twelve minutes.’
‘Get us there ASAP!’
She also starts an IV in Jack and pushes fluids, trying to keep his blood pressure from plummeting.
‘Jack, you bastard, don’t do this to me, OK? Why didn´t you say anything?’ she mumbles.
‘He probably didn´t feel it because of the adrenaline, warrying Macgyver to safety.’
‘Still!’
Matty already informed the hospital and when they land two medical teams are waiting for them. Jack is taken in first and then Macgyver follows. The three team members watch as both men are wheeled inside.
‘Well, that was it. Let’s clean the chopper and ask what are next assignment is.’
‘Yeah, lets, although I can use some pizza later.’
‘Great idea.’
