Day 17: Reluctant Caretaker

Work Text:

Kiriya’s foot tapping on the ground was the only sound in the room. Edward kept his eyes shut, as if he could ignoring the steady sound that seemed to echo around the room. A few more taps and Edward swore he was tapping out the beat of a song and he opened his eyes a little. Kiriya was staring off into space, fingers tapping along with his foot where he was leaning back into his seat. He didn’t notice the stare, and barely seemed to notice he was tapping his foot either as Edward spoke up.

“You know you don’t have to stay in here.” Kiriya’s gaze snapped over to him with surprise as he spoke, and his stopped moving as he studied the swordsman. Edward slowly sat up, ignoring the aches as his body protested the movement. He wasn’t going to push himself too far and get up, but he wasn’t going to just lay there. It wouldn’t help him sleep, and he knew it as he settled into a comfortable position. Kiriya didn’t say a word to him, but he rolled his eyes as he turned away.

He felt the urge to make the man say something. From what he had heard Capell and Aya say about him, he had been curt, rude, and smitten with Savio. He wanted to see if it was true, so he sighed as he moved his legs over the side of the bed. Instantly Kiriya was on his feet and Edward barely got to look up before he was being shoved onto his back and Kiriya was standing at his feet.

“You need to stay in bed. Or did you want to pass out on the floor?” Kiriya said flatly. Edward stared up at him for a moment before huffing and pushing up onto his elbows. Kiriya crossed his arms, tapping his fingers against his arm as he watched each movement. “I agreed to watch you because I know what I’m doing. Not to be nice.” He added.

“I never expected you to be.” Edward grunted and Kiriya scoffed. “But your foot tapping was getting annoying. How am I supposed to get the rest you tell me to get if you’re making noise over there?” He shot back.

“Excuse you?” Kiriya narrowed his eyes. “You’re not really one to speak, are you? You spent the entire time I was checking your wounds complaining. You think listening to your whining is pleasant?” Although they snipped back and forth, Kiriya’s shoulders had completely relaxed, and Edward found the corner of his lip twitch in amusement. The two stared at each other for a moment before Edward moved to sit comfortably once more. Kiriya shook his head a little as he started back for his seat but he stopped as he heard a low hiss. “What is it n-” He stopped in his tracks as he saw Edward try to his grimace.

He was kneeling on the side of the bed in an instantly, eyes flicking methodically over the man to see if he could find where the pain was. Edward tried to nudge him away but Kiriya once more pushed him back into the sheets. He ignored any protests as he straddled Edward’s thighs, pinning his legs down as he grabbed his wrist. Most of the injuries he had sustained were on his upper body, so Kiriya had no problems sitting on his legs.

Seeing that the lunaglyph on his hand wasn’t reacting he crossed that off his list of problems with relief. If it hadn’t done it’s job, Kiriya didn’t know how much else he could have done for him. The suppressant was well developed, he had nothing else to control the extra power. His hands worked to feel along his arms next, checking to see if he felt any pain there before he spotted the problem.

During the fight to get him calmed down enough, one of Aya’s arrows had pierced his side. They’d wrapped it and done what they could to heal it, but it needed time to fully heal- a spell could make quick work of damage, but the body needed to handle some of it on it’s own as well. Kiriya tugged at Edward’s shirt, lifting it to see the dark stain spreading across his torso. His movement earlier had torn the bandages open.

“Shirt off.” He muttered as he got up, moving to where his things were on the table. Edward didn’t argue with him, and when he turned back with new bandages and a few potions, he saw Edward was laying back, shirt tossed on the floor. “Even injured you don’t need to make a mess.” He couldn’t help but mutter, moving to sit on the bed and carefully peel off the bandages.

Edward didn’t move, despite the small noises of pain as Kiriya cleaned the blood off and opened a container of berry powder. A small frown was on the blonde’s lips as he cleaned the wound and handed him a potion. “Drink this while I put new bandages on.” He demanded. He gently wrapped up the spot as Edward downed the potion.

“It’s not your fault this happened.” Edward said suddenly, and Kiriya’s hands stilled for a moment before he continued what he was doing. “You pushing me down didn’t open it.” He continued and Kiriya’s jaw clenched as he fought back his argument. The wound had been clean and wrapped before he had pushed Edward down into the sheets. How could he not have done it? All the man had done was sit up.

Once he had finished he stood up without a word, not looking at Edward as he cleaned up his things. Edward only looked away from him, unable to meet the blonde’s eyes. Watching him cross back over to the chair he realized Kiriya had no plans to sleep and glanced at the bed beside his own. He felt bad if Kiriya had to stay up all night because of him.

“Don’t.” Kiriya said as he parted his lips. “I know I didn’t open your wound, just pushing you down wouldn’t do that much.” He held up a hand as Edward tried to speak. “I’m not done- if you don’t tell me what is happening with your body, that will not heal properly.” He added sternly.

Edward nodded slightly. “I was going to say I know you need rest as well. And the second bed is empty here, you don’t have to sit in a chair all night. I’m sure if anything happens you would hear it and be able to wake up.” He paused slightly. “Besides. You spending all night watching me isn’t something I can accept so easily. You also need rest.”

Kiriya crossed his arms before moving to sit on the foot of his bed. “I won’t be resting for some time. Now get some sleep.” He ordered gently. Edward sighed softly, but knew any further arguing wouldn’t help his case. Silence settled over them, and Edward was just starting to doze off when he felt the bed shift, opening his eyes a little to watch Kiriya move over and fall into the bed across from him. He had a small smile on his lips as he finally nodded off to sleep.
