Work Text:
“Oh, look. There’s a monster in my garden.”
Nyx glances up as Persephone sidles into the hidden grove she’d secluded herself in. Persephone smiles down at her, like the sun, and Nyx squints.
“I don’t understand.”
“Your form is slipping, love.”
“Oh.” Persephone’s words are true. Her skin is darkened into the void of night. Speckles of rainbow chaos glitter like patches of stars as she shifts to take in her form. The edges of her haze in dull purple smoke. It fills the air, and the tree she sits under is warping. The branches arch in strange curves that her eyes won’t follow.
“I noticed you were gone,” Persephone says, “Are you alright?”
Nyx hums, though she stays silent. Persephone laces her fingers behind her back as she approaches. The question lingers in the air as Persephone joins her in the dirt. Nyx’s form is purer, and Persephone swears she smells lavender this close. Her shape is still humanoid, though entirely puddles of dark night. She fills the room more than Persephone is used to. Persephone reaches a hand out; it’s palm up in offering to the Mother Night. Nyx shifts. A hand forms from the sludge of her being to interlace with Persephone’s own.
“I am… restless. I came here to calm down.”
“Much like our son,” Persephone says.
“Zagreus moves with purpose.”
“Not always. Sometimes even that purpose is simply to move.”
“I—” Nyx doesn’t know what to say to that.
“Could that be what you feel? Energy which seeks to be put to use.”
“Yes. Perhaps I am stagnant too frequently these days.”
“Could I help?”
Nyx creates a shimmering, violet shadow of her face. It is clearly the elegant slant of her nose and high cheekbones, but the features aren’t truly defined. Persephone tilts back to meet her eyes. Nyx bestows a soft kiss to her lips. Nyx movements curve incorrectly in Persephone’s vision; it dizzies her. She shuts her eyes. Her hands reach up to cup Nyx’s cheeks; they fill her palms. Persephone holds her tight as she kisses Nyx. Their passion builds from a simmer to a boil. Nyx hums a deep ocean rumble against her lips, and Persephone laughs.
“You sound so contented already.”
“You bring me peace.”
Persephone’s smile gentles. She nudges her face into the kisses Nyx brushes over her cheeks. Her hands trail down the slope of Nyx’s shoulder; with her eyes closed the outline of her body is clearer. Nyx multiplies and folds in under Persephone’s touch, but Persephone finds her way with patience.
“Do you want my fingers?”
“Yes,” Nyx breathes, and Persephone feels the weight of it on her skin.
She shivers. Nyx’s arms wrap around her as Persephone lets her hands fall to Nyx’s waist. Her hips are wide, and Persephone can’t help the way she squeezes them. Her fingers trace inwards to the crease of her thigh. Nyx’s legs spread, and Persephone encourages her onto her back with a hand at her stomach. Nyx settles, legs curling over Persephone’s narrow hips to keep her close. Persephone runs her hands over Nyx’s sides. The touch makes Nyx’s breathing quicken; Persephone knows her body well, even if a form so vague as this one.
Persephone’s fingers find where Nyx is warm and welcoming, and sink into her. Nyx chokes. A haze fills the air around her, dark as night and twinkling with light. It blankets Persephone’s waxen hair and she looks beautiful, like the echoes of sunlight in the deep seas.
“Is this good?”
“Persephone,” Nyx moans.
Her voice rattles through Persephone’s mind as her careful control slips further. Persephone lets her fingers slide deeper. With Nyx shifting and changing under her, it’s different. Persephone keeps her motions slow. She moves with Nyx’s writhing body like a boat moves on the waves of the sea. Her hand wraps around something solid and burning cold. It must be the core of her, where her form is centered regardless of how she looks. Persephone pets and Nyx spasms across her lap. She tugs and rubs until Nyx is yanking her down with a hand wrapped about her braid. Her arms hold Persephone painfully tight. Persephone lagush through a cough, and turns her clever mouth to Nyx’s shoulder. Nyx fingers curl longer than they should be, as she grasps Persephone’s bicep. She braces herself as she shakes and trembles under Persephone.
