Work Text:
Yoongi has hobbies. He has lots of them.
At least he thought he did.
Min Yoongi has always loved drawing. He loves drawing animals, expressions, backgrounds, and especially the cool way to write an “S” he learned when he was in middle school. His hands are always itching for a pencil or his tablet pen, wanting to create anything that gives him inspiration when it hits him out of nowhere.
Drawing has always been Yoongi’s thing.
Years later, as a Visual Development major in his last year of university, and taking his one and only final class this semester—his thesis class—he’s found more time in his hands than usual. There’s still a stressful amount of work that piles on his plate with sketching, designing, coloring, all the sorts of things a Visual Development major undergoes, but there’s a balance he’s found when he manages his time between school, work, and just extra time to himself over the years. This year, this last semester to be specific, there’s more free time that exceeds his school-work portion of his life and Yoongi is grateful for the miracle which means more naps, sleeping in, and lazing around.
One week, it’s taken Yoongi a week for him to realize more naps and literally doing nothing with his time has drained him of existential lethargy.
There’s something about sitting on his bed and staring up at the ceiling for hours on end that has stopped appealing to Yoongi’s interest these days. Maybe in retrospect, throwing himself in five classes and four morning shifts a week would do that to you if you were as busy as Yoongi when he first started university. It was normal for him to be busy, every minute of his time taken, every second used to be productive. But it’s the opposite now. He’s reduced his schedule to one class and requested less shifts to focus on working longer hours between his thesis project and building his portfolio.
Yoongi loves drawing as his major and as a future career so he practices and finds ways to improve it all the time. He’s always doodling on the side but when his creative mind begins to run low, he takes a step back, relaxes, listens to music he likes, and gets back to work.
It’s been a hectic few years and with drawing as a hobby it starts to feel like a job and Yoongi doesn’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing because who wouldn’t want to do what you love as your job. It’s just drawing can only do so much now for Yoongi to unwind.
Min Yoongi, an artistic man who finds pleasure in sleeping in his cozy bed, wants to explore his options in other comfortable napping areas like his living room floor.
Which he is currently doing.
“Why,” Namjoon doesn’t ask, just states blatantly when he walks out of his room to see his roommate, lazy as ever, who's dozing off next to the couch.
“Just finding a new way to take a nap,” Yoongi closes his eyes briefly then his flash open. “Not good, not good at all.”
“I’ve never seen you so,” Namjoon quirks a brow up in confusion, “out of it? You know, in a sense that you're a sleep-driven sloth whose life depends on more hours of sleep than the average person and seeing you so out of your element is,” Namjoon tilts his head. “odd?”
“I think I just caught up on sleep this week,” Yoongi rubs his eyes.
“You can never have enough sleep.”
“Apparently I did.”
Namjoon glances around Yoongi and finds a plastic bag next to his lifeless roommate.
“What’s that?”
“What’s what?”
“The bag? Went shopping after class?” Namjoon points out.
“Oh, Hobi told me to buy this game. Never played it before but apparently it’s all the rage right now,” Yoongi’s hand blindly finds the bag and takes out the plastic case inside, then holds it over his head to hand it to Namjoon.
Namjoon walks over, taking the case and scans the colorful plastic in all its cute glory. “Animal Crossing? You’re going to play Animal Crossing?”
“Is that what I got?” Yoongi mumbles.
“You just spent money without knowing what you bought?” Namjoon incredulously asks.
“I know I bought something that I trust Hobi on,” Yoongi shrugs. “what, you can’t see me play Animal Crossing, Joonie?”
“That’s not it,” Namjoon stares at the blonde dog on the cover, corners of his lips tugging up because that dog is so cute. He would risk his life for that dog. “it’s just I never expected you to buy it. When was the last time you played your switch?”
Yoongi contemplates in silence for a minute while Namjoon awaits his response. “When did Breath of the Wild come out?” He finally responds.
“Wow, it's been too long, hyung,” Namjoon shakes his head. “must be dusty as fuck.”
“I didn’t have as much time as now, Joonie. I’m more grateful that I worked and crammed classes these past four years to ride the last semester with ease,” Yoongi rolls over on his side to face Namjoon. “I may have all this free time and maybe, just maybe, destiny wanted me to do that so I have the time to play Animal Crossing my last semester.”
“Do you know what Animal Crossing is about?” Namjoon asks.
“Of course. You’re a cute little character living among other cute little animals! Oh, how I wish that was reality, I would take it with no regrets.”
“Well, I hope you have fun,” Namjoon spins around on his heel to go to the kitchen.
“I will,” Yoongi huffs. “try.”
—
Animal Crossing speaks to Yoongi in volumes he’s never experienced through gaming before. It has everything he loves in real life rolled into a tiny, pocket size cartridge. He can fish to his heart's content, make profit on his own leisurely pace through fruits, fish, bugs, and other things found on the island, and most importantly, he can talk to the cutest pastel, sparkly eyed bear that calls him “cutie” (only because Yoongi was given the option to change her dialogue but he thinks it’s canon because he thinks cute people call each other cute, it’s just cute people common knowledge and courtesy.)
It’s been a week since he’s started playing, immersed into the fictional world he has uniquely and creatively named after as none other than his precious dog, “Hollyland.” He hopes to find an animal to live on his island that also looks like Holly.
Starting out was rough at first, only because he started at 11pm at night (he just didn’t expect to find tarantulas chasing him, knocking him over which caused him to scream in real life which caused Namjoon to scream in the other room. It was a rough night for both of them.)
There was much to take in when his character is thrown onto an island and forced to pay back a racoon whose belly was rounder than his cheeks and greed for money that exceeded his friend Seokjin.
Sure, Yoongi thinks if he can pay back this racoon and his tiny other racoons back right away and then he can get to the real core and essence of this game. So he crafts nets and fishing rods, doing whatever it takes to catch what he can sell off to pay off a tent. He walks along rivers and beaches to catch fish, walks through overgrown weeds and picks them along the way, and catches colorful butterflies.
It’s nice, really nice actually. Yoongi likes taking his time to clear greenery and finding new fish and bugs to donate to the museum. He’s been playing this game for only a week and he’s having the time of his life. There’s so much control over what he can do, what he wants to do, and how he wants to do it. There’s so much freedom he can take into his own imaginative hands, it's a refreshing change than what he’s used too. He loves the pace and simplicity that is Animal Crossing and relishes in the cozy, serene island that is his own.
That is until he checks Twitter.
Yoongi doesn’t go on twitter often, but he does check it from time to time, especially when he’s out eating lunch by himself and only has his phone as entertainment. So he scrolls through Twitter, passing tweets from Namjoon complaining about research papers, or Hoseok posting selcas after dance practice, just lots of the usual post he’s used to seeing.
Then there’s a retweet from Hoseok with screenshots of someone’s island. He clicks on the pictures and his jaw drops.
Their island is breathtaking, gorgeous in design that he did not consider possible in such a simple game. There’s a cute street of makeshift shops from customized stands, flowers of variety and colors beyond red, yellow, and white, and what caught his eye the most is the flowing waterfalls, so delicate and structured but spill to the ends of cliffs so beautifully.
Yoongi is a patient man. He’s never one to rush as he finds it impractical and messy when you enforce something that does not adhere to a time constraint.
But Yoongi is also very jealous and wants an island just as cute, luxurious, and captivating as twitter user @ Raymondsbtch.
So first things first, he needs to find more fruit because he didn’t know there were more than 3 types.
“Hey, buddy, you ok here?” Namjoon peeks into the living room to stare at Yoongi whose blanket is wrapped snugly around his whole body.
“AGGGHHHH,” Yoongi groans.
“Animal Crossing again?” Namjoon asks. Yoongi groans again. “I see, I see.”
“I just don’t get it, I spent all these Nook Miles Tour tickets and I can’t find any peaches, apples, and oranges! Where am I supposed to get them if I can’t find them!”
“What does that mean? I don’t know what this means.”
“It’s okay, Joonie. You don’t have to get it, just understand that I’m suffering right now.” Yoongi continues to play. He just arrived on a new island and, oh what’s that on this island? Apples? More. APPLES. GIVE IT UP FOR ANOTHER ISLAND WITH APPLES.
Namjoon watches Yoongi’s demise from the hallway. “Do you need help playing?”
“Oh, Namjoonie, you’re willing to help me?!” Yoongi says with a sudden smile. “You’re big brain will do wonders for me in this game, you blessing in disguise!”
“Not me, weirdo,” Namjoon waves him off. “I know someone who's good at this game, they’ve been playing a lot from things he’s posted. I can text him right now so he could help you.”
“To help me? Hm, maybe I guess—“
“I already texted him.”
“What?!” Yoongi sits up when he realizes Namjoon already has his phone out.
“He replied. He said sure. I’m going to text him your number right now.”
“Uh—“
Yoongi's text tone rings right beside him. That was too fucking fast.
Yoongi looks up to ask Namjoon what this guy is like, but his back is already turned and is headed back inside his room. He picks up his phone and sees multiple messages from an unknown number.

There’s a whole new world that Jungkook has taught Yoongi when it comes to playing Animal Crossing. It opened doors to a very different gameplay that Yoongi had been living by.
First things first, Jungkook teaches Yoongi about the importance of resources in Animal Crossing. He recommends Yoongi not to sell his fruit, to at least save some because it doesn’t sell as high as fruit that is not native to his island. He told him to replant non-native fruit more and he could sell that. The second thing he tells Yoongi is to complete all the task Tom Nook tells him to do for now, that he will have more options and free range to make his island better when he’s all done with them like access to creating pathways. And lastly, the most important in Jungkook’s case, is to buy as many turnips as possible. He tells him not to eat them because they are a source of income or in Jungkook’s weird language, an investment in “stonks.”
So there are a few new things Yoongi has done on his island. He’s saved a fair amount of his fruits but has planted all the other fruit on his island so he has an abundance of them too. He’s also following Tom Nook’s task and now he just needs to reach a 3 star rating on his island to get whoever the fuck K.K. Slider on his island to perform. And the turnips, oh how Yoongi has spent so much money on turnips but with the help of Jungkook, he has gained more money then he spent. Luckily Jungkook has tons of friends with amazing turnip prices that let Yoongi in and take one or five trips to buy and sell turnips. Now Yoongi has a bank account with millions of bells and barely spends it. He tells Jungkook “it’s just nice to look at.”
Yoongi loves to play casually, which is fine and Jungkook doesn’t judge anyone who plays a certain way. Yoongi was going to accept the fact that he may not have the most extraordinary island, an amazing layout, and the best DIY crafts because he enjoys his game at his own pace. The game only came out two weeks ago, how far can someone go on a game that plays in real time? So he continues as usual, casually catching butterflies and fishing for his 68th sea bass that day. Life's good.
That is until he visits Jungkook’s island.
[Yoongi]
do you have white roses?
i want to plant judy white roses next to her house
she would look good with roses
[John cookie]
yah
ill open my gates
then u can buy them at my nooks shop
they’re selling all 3 colors
[Yoongi]
cool thanks
Then he’s flying over Jungkook’s island and when he catches a glimpse of it overhead, he can’t help but gape in awe. In disastrous, distressed, amazingly dazzled awe.
Passenger Arriving:
Unhindered Child
Yoongi
Arriving from:
Hollyland
Yoongi arrives and he’s surrounded by pink trees and gorgeous waterfalls that invite him, tempt him to take his time and walk down the pink cobblestone path and a variety of pink flowers. There’s paths that go in so many directions, but thoughtfully placed and it helps Yoongi flow into Jungkook's little makeshift marketplace where his Nook’s Cranny is located. Before he goes inside to buy flowers, he takes in the little tables that line up next to the river, the food stalls that reminisces night markets in Gangnam, and he spots the pink drink machine and pink snack machine he had sent Jungkook.
No wonder he wanted them, it fits right into Jungkook’s island.
Yoongi goes into Nook’s Cranny after admiring the masterpiece that is only just part of Jungkook’s island and buys his flowers.
Weirdly, he has not seen Jungkook at all. He already knows Yoongi’s here anyway, so Yoongi gives himself a personal tour of Jungkook’s island on his own.
It really is magnificent. There’s waterfalls everywhere, the neighborhood of Jungkook’s island has flowers and items that coordinate to each villager's home, and his favorite, the cluttered market street that goes all the way down to the secret beach. He walks down it a few times, grazing over boxes and clothes, foods and accessories, just a random assortment of whatever Jungkook’s collected in his time playing Animal Crossing.
Yoongi gets a text.

“You look so happy,” Namjoon catches Yoongi off guard.
“I mean take a look at this!” Yoongi turns his switch around, showing Namjoon his screen of Jungkook’s character standing next to Yoongi’s character. “it’s cute, right? He’s dressed as a big bunny.”
“Is that Jungkook?” Namjoon asks.
“Oh yeah,” Yoongi’s phone goes off. He puts his switch down and reads the message. “Haha, he just texted saying, why aren’t you moving, I’m trying to show you my museum.”
“You’re still texting him?”
“Yeah, it’s only been a week and he’s been a big help so far,” Yoongi sends his text. “but this is the first time I’ve been on his island and it’s fucking amazing, Joon-ah. I’m so jealous!”
“That’s cool, very cool,” Namjoon just looks at Yoongi who is curled up on the couch, legs propped up and giggling at his phone.
“His character just sneezed on me!” Yoongi gasps and starts furiously texting.
[Yoongi]
WHEN I LEARN TO SNEEZE TOO
[John cookie]
o
im so scared
Yoongi scrunches his nose in disgust and starts chasing Jungkook’s character in the game.
“Hyung, I’m going to—“
“Joon-ah, he keeps sneezing on me! I can’t do anything but clap!” Yoongi exclaims. “Terrible! I want to hit him with my net but I’m in his museum and I want to see it, but I also want to hit him with my net!”
“I was just gonna say I’m—“
“Oh, I’m just going to run out. I hope he follows me out too so he knows I want to hit him with my net.”
“Do you want to help me with something, Yoongi-hyung?” Namjoon stares, annoyed, as Yoongi continues to ignore him as he focuses on his switch. “Actually, I need you come with me, you have too.”
Namjoon marches over to Yoongi and grabs his wrist, pulling him up from his comfortable position.
“What-what are you doing?!” Yoongi grimaces as Namjoon tugs him out towards the front door. Namjoon’s other hand unlocks the door with ease and Yoongi gasps at the sight of the door flinging open. “I’m still playing, Namjoonie!”
“Trust me, this won’t affect much,” Namjoon lazily looks back at a confused Yoongi. “we’re just going next door.”
“What? Why?”
Yoongi one hand holds onto his switch for dear life while his opposite arm, where Namjoon holds a tight lock grip on Yoongi’s wrist, gets dragged to stand in front of their next door neighbors' apartment.
Park Jimin, the next door neighbor who currently resides beyond the door they’re standing in front of, is sweet and Yoongi enjoys talking to him occasionally when they cross paths going home. Other than that, they don’t talk much because Jimin is always out almost every night. Whether it be overnight library studying or house parties he’s been invited too, Jimin is just never home half the time.
So right now, it’s odd to Yoongi when they stand in front of Jimin’s door at 9:02pm on a Friday night, a peak time that Jimin is definitely not home.
Namjoon uses his free hand to knock on the door. There’s only silence.
“Joon-ah, I don’t think Jimin’s home,” Yoongi comments.
“Not here for Jimin.”
“Who else would-“
Yoongi is cut off when the jingling of the door is unlocked in front of them. The door slowly opens to reveal someone that’s not Jimin, someone much taller, broader built, and curious eyes that scoop out who's knocking. They land on Yoongi’s equally wandering eyes first, and then Yoongi freezes because oh god, cute boy alert.
Those doe eyes quickly move to Namjoon. “Namjoon-hyung? Hey, what’s up?”
“Just wanted to pick up the photos I asked you to print me if they’re ready?” Namjoon asks.
“Of course! They’re ready! Let me go get them,” the other boy disappears, but leaves the door open slightly.
“That’s not Jimin? Did he move without telling me? Have I been too into Animal Crossing to not have realized? God, this game is killing me, huh?” Yoongi complains.
“Shut up, hyung.”
The other boy comes back then hands Namjoon a white envelope.
“Done and done!” The boy gives Namjoon a shy smile.
“Thank you, I really appreciate it,” Namjooon smiles back. And then Namjoon lifts the hand that’s gripping Yoongi’s wrist. “Also this is Min Yoongi. He appreciates all the help you’ve been giving him in Animal Crossing.”
Yoongi stares bewildered at his floating wrist, and then he looks back at the boy who stares just as shocked at Yoongi.
“Jungkook?” Yoongi asks incredulously. He holds up his switch and shows him his screen of both of their motionless characters in Jungkook’s museum.
“Oh my god,” Jungkook gapes at the screen. “You’re the one who eats turnips.”
“Not anymore!” Yoongi exclaims when he breaks out of his frozen stupor.
“Just thought I’d finally introduce you, I don’t think both of you have the guts to do it, you know, as you both never leave the fucking apartment,” Namjoon smiles cynically when they both freeze at unneeded call outs. Yoongi wants to slap him because some people don’t want to walk around parks and talk to trees in their free time like Namjoon, ok, it’s just not Yoongi’s thing. But he doesn’t make a move to berate Namjoon, not when Jungkook’s right there. “Thank you again, Jungkook, we’re going to go now. Tell Jimin we said hi!”
And Namjoon drags Yoongi back and Jungkook watches them go.
The door shuts with a click from Namjoon. As soon as he turns around, Yoongi is childishly slapping Namjoon’s chest.
“TRAITOR!!!! TRAITOR!!!!” Yoongi whines, still slapping. “You knew!!! You knew he lived there!”
“Just recently,” Namjoon laughs at Yoongi’s antics. Yoongi stops his slapping and stomps back over to the couch, curling up and wrapping himself in a blanket. Yoongi glares at Namjoon from his comfortable spot. “I met him only because Jimin introduced us when they were out having lunch!”
“He’s dating Jimin?!” Yoongi grits his teeth, then his hands come up to cover his face in shame, cheeks pink from embarrassment. “I knew it! I should have known he was taken! The hot boy I pass by to get to the art building every Tuesday was not only our next door neighbor, but taken by Jimin!” Yoongi shakes his head. “Cruel! Namjoon, you’re so cruel!”
“Ok, ok! Look, Jungkook is not dating Jimin! They’re just roommates, just childhood friends!” Namjoon clarifies. “He’s a freshman too which is why he just moved in!”
“Oh my god,” Yoongi says softly. “He’s a baby, I like a baby, Namjoon?”
“Just thought you should finally meet, you know, your Animal Crossing mentor, I guess.” Namjoon shrugs. “I think you’ve gotten friendlier with each other. Plus you think he’s hot. You’ve already broken the ice, this is good for you.”
“I’ve had the hots for this guy and have been consistently venting to you about how much his ethereal presence is the only thing keeping me motivated to walk to the art building once a week,” Yoongi gulps. “Only to find out now he’s our next door neighbor who flys over to my virtual island and helps me pick my weeds in a customized burger shirt and hat he calls ‘Kurber Bing’ couture?! Did you know that Namjoon? Jungkook never EVER says Burger King? He says KURBER BING, why does he do that?!”
Namjoon rubs his temples in distress, but mostly he’s tired. Of what specifically? Yoongi? Yoongi’s whining? Maybe it’s just life altogether getting to him, but is it really the time to contemplate existential dread right now? No.
“Just like, you can talk to him in person now, hyung,” Namjoon leaves with that and retreats into his room. “Shoot your shot, I guess.”

Namjoon said to shoot his shot, so Yoongi will do his fucking best to shoot. his. shot. He played basketball, shooting guard too, he should know what the fuck is shooting his shot.
But Yoongi wants to take his time with this because perfect shots take practice. He doesn’t want to rush into anything, he’s not someone to spontaneously act before thinking, improving, and perfecting.
Also Yoongi’s shy so for now, this is the best he can do.
“Hi,” Yoongi says with no emotion and awkward smile when Jungkook opens the door to his apartment and he’s standing there outside.
“Hi?” Jungkook replies a little hesitant, surprised at Yoongi’s sudden appearance.
“I know we usually text about this stuff but,” Yoongi flips his switch around to show Jungkook. “I got terraforming and I just don’t get it.”
“What’s not to get?” Jungkook tilts his head, staring at the screen.
“Everything.” Yoongi pouts. “Can you like, teach me or something? It’d be easier if you just talked me through it while you watch me?”
“Yeah, I can do that,” Jungkook opens the door wider, stepping aside and waves his hand. “come on in.”
They settle in the living room because Jungkook’s switch dock is connected to the living room TV, just like Yoongi. They sit on the couch together, contemplating on the layout of Yoongi’s island. Jungkook suggests flattening everything, starting fresh by taking out all the rivers so he can design the form on his own. Yoongi tries this, but complains after three minutes of dismantling a long cliff on one side of his island. Yoongi groans and Jungkook reassures him that he can do this, he’s got this. So Yoongi goes in again, but after only a mere 5 seconds Yoongi’s handing Jungkook his joycons and lying on his couch.
“I have terraformed for only 5 minutes and I wanna rip out my hair,” Yoongi squints at the screen, his character just bouncing around and waiting for his control. “I know what you mean. I also get those tweets now, why they hate terraforming so much.”
“You’re so lazy,” Jungkook laughs. “You’ve barely played. You haven’t crossed the threshold of terraforming hell yet.”
“I think it’s too much power for me. Terraforming is god's role. I’m just a mere civilian, Hollyland’s island rep, very first island dweller. What more with god’s abilities.”
Yoongi blinks for only a second and watches his character start to dismantle another tier on his island. He turns his head, looking up at Jungkook whose focus is on the screen as he uses Yoongi’s joycons.
“Let me take care of it then.” Jungkook stays concentrated and Yoongi admires the sharp jawline from his view. A very lovely view.
“That’s a lot of work, Jungkook.”
“I don’t mind,” Jungkook continues without pause. “I’m basically done with my island and I want to help, that’s why you came, right?”
Oh, he’s so confident. Oh, he just winked at me. Animal Crossing Expert Jungkook PhD Certified is sexy.
“You saved me, Jungkook. This is just grunt work and you’re doing it for me? I’m sorry I made fun of your Burger King hat.”
“Kurber Bing.”
“You even say it out loud like that?!”
—
“Come to my island!” is the first thing Yoongi says to Jungkook the minute he answers his phone.
“Ok, ok, are your gates open?”
“They are!”
Yoongi sits on his couch playing Animal Crossing (as usual, as always). His character waits at the entrance of his island for Jungkook to arrive.
Passenger Arriving:
Accomplished Clown
Cooky
Arriving from:
Choco Chip
“Here,” Jungkook puts his phone down next to him and presses the speaker button. “what’s up?”
“Follow me!” Yoongi enthusiastically says back and starts charging to the right of his island.
Jungkook’s character follows. They pass by some flat land, a lot of flat land, like so much flat, green land because Jungkook spent so many hours tearing down cliffs for Yoongi until they reach a small section where a small, two tier waterfall appears in the middle of nothing. Yoongi’s character circles the waterfall because it’s really not that big, it’s tiny.
“Here!”
“Here?” Jungkook walks around the waterfall, inspecting it as Yoongi’s character emotes in flowers and smiles.
“My first attempt at terraforming! I made a waterfall!” Yoongi takes notice that Jungkook doesn’t say anything right away as his character just blinks at the screen and Yoongi's tone changes softly. “It’s not that good, huh? Sorry, I just got really excited.”
Jungkook immediately answers, “No that’s not it! It’s beautiful!”
Yoongi is quiet for a bit. “Really?”
Jungkook answers “Really. I love it, I really, really love it.”
“You don’t have to lie, Jungkookie, I’ve seen your island.”
“That’s not it, I mean,” And Jungkook sounds genuine enough to convince Yoongi he does mean it. “I’m just— so happy you’re happy. I came over here to see this and I can’t believe how cute—how cute the waterfall is!”
Yoongi ignores the way Jungkook corrects himself and lets him get away with it. It’s Jungkook, he’d let Jungkook do anything. “I’m coming over to your house, literally. I want to transform my island and I need your help Jungkook.”
“I’ll unlock the door for you right now.”
—
“Why do they do that, Jungkook?” Yoongi points at Jungkook's TV that’s connected to Yoongi’s switch.
“Do what?” Jungkook’s attention goes from his switch screen to the TV from his spot on the floor.
“Why do they run like Naruto?” Yoongi stares in confusion. “Like they always do that. In front of the Residents building. All the time. Especially in pairs!”
“It’s a fun pastime for them,” Jungkook replies cooly.
“Weeaboos, they’re middle schooler weeaboos,” Yoongi claims, but he won’t deny that Diana and Judy doing it is the cutest thing in the world. Those two could do anything and Yoongi will love them forever.
“Weeaboos? Are you one? Cause I can see you doing this exact thing at our Uni’s quad.” Jungkook jokes.
“Oh, you’d like that, hm,” Yoongi scoffs. “Just admit you do it and move on with your life. I hear all the Anime music you play in the background when we talk on the phone.”
“No idea what you’re talking about.”
“Just be proud weeb, I won’t judge you,” Yoongi pats Jungkook’s head. “I find it rather cute actually, a soft boy like you has lots of love for wholesome, big titty, animation.”
“Huh, wait you think I’m—“
“I’m home, Jungkookie—” Jimin announces when he opens the door. “Yoongi-hyung?”
“Good morning, Jimin,” Yoongi salutes.
“It’s—“ Jimin checks his wrist watch. “almost 9pm.”
“Did we play all day, Jungkook? Oh my god,” Yoongi sits up, bewildered when he checks his phone.
“I played all day,” Jungkook corrects. “You, for one, came over, played for an hour, took a nap for 4 hours on my couch, woke up to eat my honey butter chips, slept again, and then woke up like 2 hours ago.”
“Is that what happened today? Time really has become meaningless to me.” Yoongi lays back down.
“You two really have nothing better to do,” Jimin crosses his arms, judging them from the door.
“I think it sounds fun,” A head pops up from behind Jimin. “I kind of want to do this too.”
“Taetae, no,” Jimin shakes his head.
“Hyung, that guy is the one with the amazing turnip prices,” Jungkook points at Taehyung. “He’s the one I always tell you to buy from.”
“Your Vincent from Van Gogh?” Yoongi turns to Taehyung.
“The you must be Yoongi from Hollyland!” Taehyung claps. “It’s nice to meet you! You must be Jungkook’s—“
Jimin slaps Taehyung before he can finish and Jungkook’s pupils are blown wide, already halfway up like he’s ready to tackle Taehyung, and Yoongi is sitting there, confused.
“I’m just going to get my jacket and then we’ll be on our way out,” Jimin nods to Jungkook.
“Ok,” Jungkook nods back.
Jimin stares back between Jungkook and Yoongi and Yoongi is just like what the fuck is going on.
“Maybe we could play together another time!” Taehyung soothingly rubs the cheek Jimin slapped. “We can water each other's flowers so we can get more hybrid colors!”
“Sounds great,” Yoongi smiles.
And Taehyung tenses when he looks back at Jungkook.
“Or not!”
“Huh?” Yoongi wants to ask why, but Taehyung walks out the door when Jimin comes back.
“Maybe another time!” Taehyung calls out. “Just not anytime soon! For reasons!”
And he’s gone when Jimin pulls him out and the front door slams shut.
“The fuck was that?” Yoongi frowns.
“Not sure,” Jungkook says, although Yoongi feels suspicious. “Not sure.”
—
“My turnip prices are 530,” is all Jungkook tells Yoongi when Yoongi opens his apartment door.
“I’ll go on now.”
Jungkook walks into Yoongi’s apartment, this being his first time ever since they first started texting each other. It’s Yoongi who's usually skipping over to Jungkook’s place and settling himself snuggly on his couch, making himself at home there because Yoongi’s always asking for help. Luckily, Jungkook doesn’t mind and let’s Yoongi do whatever he wants.
Jungkook walks in and seats himself on the couch. He takes in the minimalist of the living room, walls bare and just a few books lying around on the coffee table in front of the TV. Just the very few necessities he would expect from college students.
“Jungkook-ah, come over here,” Yoongi yells from somewhere.
Jungkook gets up and heads towards the direction of Yoongi’s voice. There’s faint music playing as he keeps walking and it only gets louder as he approaches the only other open door down the hallway. Jungkook assumes that it’s Yoongi's room and steps inside.
“You can sit on the bed. I’m going to head over to the airport right now,” Yoongi says from the other side of his room.
Jungkook's eyes widen as they take in the complete contrast of Yoongi’s room compared to his living room. Yoongi’s room is cluttered, packed with so many things everywhere and anywhere. A whole wall is taken up by giant bookshelves of thick books and CDs and vinyl records. The walls are covered in artwork, paintings, and movie posters of all kinds, mostly from major animation productions he’s grown up with.
“Your room is really cool, hyung,” Jungkook stands there in awe, amazed, and thoroughly fascinated by a corner of Yoongi’s wall with Ghibli movie posters surrounding a painting of “Bold and Brash.”
“It’s pretty messy but thank you.”
Jungkook finds Yoongi hunched over a desk, legs up in his cushioned chair. He spins around to face Jungkook as his switch loads up Animal Crossing.
“Hyung, I didn’t know you drew?” Jungkook points out the giant tablet that’s still on and running, forgotten immediately for Animal Crossing. Jungkook sits at the edge of Yoongi’s bed, peeking at the screen and his eyes light up at the artwork. “Woah, you’re really good, hyung! It’s so beautiful.”
“Thanks, I just added a new layer to start shading. I had a lot of time today and I still need to add more pieces to my portfolio.”
“You’re creating a portfolio?”
“It’s my last year, and I am an Art major, I need my work to be compiled and showcase what I can do.”
“Art major?! I didn’t know that about you,” Jungkook bites his lips in thought.
“We only talk about Animal Crossing anyway.” Yoongi mentions, but it does nothing to steer the tiny bit of unease he can see evident on Jungkook’s face. For some reason, Jungkook hearing Yoongi say they never talk about anything that’s not Animal Crossing seems to affect him more than Yoongi realizes.
“You’re right,” Jungkook sighs.
“It’s supposed to be a bunny.”
“Hm?”
“My drawing, haha.”
“Your drawing? Really?” Jungkook seems to genuinely be more interested in the drawing at this point, Switch in his hands loose in the palms of his hands.
“Yeah, I’ve always liked drawing animals, I think that’s how I got into it,” Yoongi explains.
“Very fitting then that you found Animal Crossing. Actually, now I’m surprised you found Animal Crossing this late.”
“Well I’m here now, right?”
“That’s true.” Jungkook laughs.
“And are you going to open your gates? I’ve been button smashing A at Orville but he kept saying your gates weren’t open.”
“Sorry! Let me do that now!” Jungkook focuses back on the game.
Yoongi, trying to be as casual as possible asks, “what are you majoring in, Jungkook?”
“Me?” Jungkook chuckles nervously. “I’m actually undecided right now.”
“That’s cool,” Yoongi replies.
“Cool, huh.”
“Yeah,” Yoongi notices the way Jungkook replies back a little dully. “do not like being undecided?”
“No, that’s not it,” Jungkook sighs. “it’s just weird. I’m still figuring out what I want to do, taking some prerequisite classes for some majors. I’m just figuring it out, I don’t know, haha.”
Yoongi puts his switch back on his desk, turns his whole body towards Jungkook and gives him his undivided attention.
“It’s ok to not know what you want to do. Now or later, it doesn’t matter, Jungkook. Some people know what they want to do now, some people never figure out what they want to do. Both options are valid. What I want you to know is what you’re thinking about is normal, it’s not weird at all. Take all the time to figure yourself out because at the end of the day, you know yourself the best.”
Yoongi watches Jungkook eyes widen and stare right back at him, mouth agape. Then Yoongi feels his muscle tense, his fingers start to sweat, and there’s a twitch to his jaw.
Was that ok to say? Yoongi thinks. He doesn’t know Jungkook well enough to know what he’s thinking, to assume he’s like that, that he’s like Yoongi. But there’s something in Yoongi that tells him Jungkook’s more understanding, forgiving, and more like him than he realizes.
“You’re really cool, hyung,” is all Jungkook says.
“Cool? You think?” Yoongi leans back in his chair. “You flatter me.”
“No, you really are,” Jungkook scoots himself closer to Yoongi. “what’s it like? Being an art major? Can you tell me all about it.”
“You’re really interested?”
“I really am.”
“Then, as soon as I sell my turnips, I’ll tell you.”
—
What was supposed to be the usual Animal Crossing hang out with Jungkook had instead turned into a regular hang out, like normal friends do on normal days doing normal things that’s not exclusively playing Animal Crossing.
They played Animal Crossing for five minutes max before Yoongi started showing Jungkook what he had in his portfolio so far. Jungkook asked tons of questions and Yoongi answered all of them to the best of his abilities when it came to his own artwork, tips on drawing, and just anything art in general.
Jungkook in turn tells him about photography, his love for photographing still pictures because he likes capturing one second moments and turning them into physical moments that can last forever. Jungkook’s been on a balancing scale of choosing between what he wants to do and what he thinks he should do. Jungkook informs him that Yoongi’s been a big help in helping him realize how amazing it would be to commit to a passion major rather than just settling for stability.
It’s late into the night when Jungkook goes home and Yoongi thinks that was a short-lived fluke of a hang out.
But no, the next day proves Yoongi to be completely wrong.
It’s Yoongi, who walks out of class and Jungkook is suddenly right there, asking him if he wants to go eat lunch with him. It’s Jungkook, who recommends a cute cafe across the street and they hang out there because it plays good music and serves delicious milk tea. It’s Yoongi, who pays for their meal and lets Jungkook finish the rest because Jungkook looks really cute and happily eats their meal. It’s Jungkook, who teases Yoongi on the way home that cats are sometimes scared of his scowling face. It’s Yoongi, who lets Jungkook take a detour on the way home to visit the park and take pictures, wanting Yoongi’s company as they walk under the setting sun. It’s Jungkook, who carries Yoongi back home when he complains about walking so much but not about the afternoon he spent with Jungkook. It’s Yoongi who pretends to sleep on his back just to hear Jungkook sing on their way back.
And it’s Jungkook who keeps asking him every week to lunch.
And it’s Yoongi who always says yes.
And it’s just never just about Animal Crossing anymore.
—
“I’ll be back, gotta go to the bathroom,” Jungkook's voice is loud and clear through Yoongi’s speaker phone.
“Ok,” Yoongi nods.
Yoongi can hear fabric rustling through the phone, then a door opens and closes indicating Jungkook’s gone.
Yoongi sits on his bed, switch turned on already and he waits for Jungkook to come back and come to his island.
These days, being with Jungkook is more than just video games now. They hang out more often outside of their homes these days like catching a movie or eating at the night market. It surprises even Yoongi that being home, playing Animal Crossing with Jungkook isn’t the norm for them anymore. A boundary of friendship has crossed between Yoongi and Jungkook and they’ve been embracing every bit of it, like they want to be closer, want to be with each other always. There’s a mutual trust they’ve built between each other which is why they’re so comfortable around one another. It’s something Yoongi’s been appreciating greatly.
It’s been a while, maybe a few weeks since Yoongi has played with Jungkook. Yoongi still plays Animal Crossing everyday, but playing with Jungkook these days has become rare. He’s so used to late night munchie runs to the convenience store with Jungkook or quiet library study sessions turned into footsie battle with Jungkook or old school rap music record shopping around the local thrift store with Jungkook that he forgets that he only met Jungkook because of Animal Crossing.
Tonight, Yoongi has finally finished decorating his island. It’s still not as amazing as Jungkook’s, but it’s something Yoongi’s proud of and wants to show it off to Jungkook. Yoongi would have made it this far or finished just as fast if Jungkook wasn’t there to help him along the way.
“Yo, you’re home?” Namjoon eyes Yoongi sitting on his bed.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be home?”
“Cause you’re always out these days with Jungkook.”
“Oh, that’s true,” Yoongi scratches his head. “He said he's feeling sick so we’re playing games instead.”
“Love that, hyung,” Namjoon leans against Yoongi’s door frame. “You’ve come full circle, that’s really cute.”
“We did?”
“First, strangers playing Animal Crossing, then friends playing Animal Crossing,” Namjoon sighs. “Now you’re boyfriends playing Animal Crossing. I knew you could do it, Hyung.”
“Wh-what?!”
“You just needed that push, right? Glad I could help.”
“Boyfriends?! Namjoon, Jungkook isn’t my boyfriend,” Yoongi tries to keep his tone low, eyeing his phone that’s right in between them.
“You’re not?! Hyung, what?! You guys act like it all the time!”
“Yeah, ok. Not now, Namjoon—“
“You never told him you think he’s hot as fuck cause you say it a lot, hyung.”
“Stop, Namjoon—“
“If Jungkook has no idea you like him then what’s up with your dates. You’re basically dating and I’m hundred percent sure he wouldn’t say no if you asked him on a date.”
“Namjoon—“
“It’s so weird cause you really, really like this guy, Jeon Jungkook, next door neighbor and man you’re with almost everyday, who for some reason has not noticed once that you have the biggest giant crush on him, Jeon Jungkook—“
“OH MY GOD SHUT UP!” Yoongi jumps off his bed, slapping his hand over Namjoon’s mouth and pulling him into the hallway.
Namjoon’s mouth is muffled when he tries to talk and pry Yoongi’s hands off him, but he knows he’s saying “what the fuck.”
“I’m on the phone with him, Joon,” Yoongi whispers, “he’s on fucking speaker phone.”
Namjoon processes the words Yoongi carefully, realizing with big regret that he never really knows when to shut up. Why do people tell him secrets in the first place when Namjoon just loves talking out of his ass.
“Hyung, I’m back!” Jungkook’s voice cuts through the silence. Namjoon and Yoongi look at each other nervously. “Hyung?”
“Jungkook-ah, hey,” Yoongi calls out hesitantly. “did you hear everything just now?”
“Hear anything?” Jungkook hums, “Mm, no. I just got back, what happened?”
“Nothing, nothing,” Yoongi is relieved, shoulders relaxing, and he sits back down on his bed. “Namjoon was telling me he had terrible diarrhea right now.”
“Hyung?!” Namjoon gasps and Jungkook’s cackles on the other end of the line.
“Tell him about it, Joon-ah.”
“Hyung!”
—
“I like how we haven’t seen each other for three days and the only thing we played while you were sick was Animal Crossing,” Yoongi lets Jungkook into his apartment. “And the first thing you want to do when you’re better is to come over and play more Animal Crossing.”
“Just wanted to do something first.”
Jungkook and Yoongi each sit at one end of the couch facing each other, focused on playing their switches.
Yoongi’s character comes out of his house and turns to open his mailbox right away as routine. He sees a few letters from villagers, but notices a letter from Jungkook.
“You didn’t even attach a gift, what are you sending me, Jungkookie.” Yoongi snickers.
So Yoongi opens the letter right away and his smile instantly fades, his face heats up rapidly, and he stares at the letter, repeating the words in front of him over and over as he tries not to think too deeply into the meaning.
Dear Yoongi,
I really like you too.
From, Jeon Jungkook
Yoongi peeks up from his switch, but Jungkook’s covering his own face with his switch. And Yoongi see’s Jungkook’s hands slightly shaking, his legs are curled up close to him, and hasn’t said a single word since they started playing.
“Jungkook?” Yoongi calls out to him. Jungkook just nods back. “did you hear Namjoon that one time we talked on the phone?” Jungkook nods again.
“Sorry, I’m nervous,” Jungkook says softly.
Yoongi wants to reach out and tell him it’s ok, don’t be afraid, it’s just me. But Yoongi thinks Jungkook may not like him back like he likes him. Maybe he feels pressured because of Namjoon’s words, that he might lose his friends if Jungkook doesn’t reciprocate the feelings Yoongi has for him. Yoongi doesn’t know whether to be upset or furious that what might be happening now are pity feelings.
“Jungkook-ah,” Yoongi’s palms start to sweat. “you don’t have to do this.”
“What do you mean, hyung?”
“If Namjoon made you feel uncomfortable, then I’m sorry. He revealed how much I like you as, uh, more than a friend,” Yoongi grits his teeth. “And if that isn’t something you’re ready to talk about because you don’t like me back like that, then it’s ok—“
“I don’t like you?! What?! Did you read the letter?!” Jungkook springs up from his spot, face revealed and Yoongi’s stunned to come face to face with Jungkook’s equally pinker, maybe even redder shade of embarrassment on his face.
“I just assumed you were trying to be nice?” Yoongi says more as a question than a sure answer.
“You have no idea, hyung, how much I like you too. I like you so much,” Jungkook eyes have a sparkle and intensity in them that Yoongi wants to get lost in forever. “I’m just nervous. I’m just really nervous to say how much I like you. I’m just preparing myself.”
“Well,” Yoongi breathes, staring at Jungkook. “are you prepared?”
“I—“ And Jungkook realizes he’s staring at Yoongi and he’s staring back so Jungkook’s getting flustered. Jungkook tries to move back, to find his switch and cover his face, but Yoongi’s faster, catching Jungkook’s wrist to keep him close before he can pull back.
“No no no nonono,” Yoongi holds onto Jungkook’s wrist tight. “you are not going to run away and hide your face! I want to see you tell me what you feel as you stare lovingly into my goddamn eyes!”
“It’s embarrassing! It’s so ooey gooey, I can’t do that in front of you, hyung!” Jungkook whines.
“Does not fucking matter, you’re going to have too anyway! You like me and I like you! Get used to ooey gooey feelings all the time cause I like you a lot and I want you to always know!”
“You’re so embarrassing,” Jungkook tries to shake him off. Yoongi knows he can break away, Jungkook is a lot stronger than Yoongi so he knows Jungkook likes this, being close.
“Then let me tell you first,” Yoongi says. “Let me be the first to tell you how much I like you, not Namjoon.”
Jungkook lowers his wrist and Yoongi loosens his grip only to hold Jungkook’s hands in his own. Jungkook looks down at them and slowly, he interlaces their fingers together. Yoongi tugs them towards him to get Jungkook’s attention. And Jungkook, he just gives him a small smile back now, something about being nervous has washed away because Jungkook realizes Yoongi was right, it’s just him. It’s Yoongi. He trust him.
“Ok,” Jungkook breathes.
“Ok,” Yoongi nods and he takes a breath. “when Namjoon first introduced us via text message, you were just my mentor in Animal Crossing, my turnip and bells sugar daddy, and someone I mooched off of when I needed anything in Animal Crossing cause I’m a hopeless fisher,” Jungkook giggles and Yoongi can’t stop smiling. “and then I met you in person and I found out you were the hot guy I used to gawk at on my way to my thesis class, a guy I just assumed was so cool and handsome only to find out you like to play Animal Crossing for hours and hours just like me, will stop me anytime we’re out when you find something worth photographing, and will call me in the middle of the night cause you have ice cream cravings and want me to go with you to the convenience store.
All those times I came over to play Animal Crossing in your house, it was just an excuse to be with you because you’re funny and I can talk to you endlessly about whatever. And you showed me your photography and I swear to god, Jungkook, everything you capture is gold. What you have isn’t just a gift, it’s hard work, patience, and practice. I believe whatever it is you decide to do though, you‘ll be amazing at it and if you’ll let me, I want to be by your side, even as a friend.”
“You can’t say that,” Jungkook pulls his and Yoongi’s hands to his chest. Yoongi can feel Jungkook's heart beating erratically, but he’s grinning, they’re grinning and everything feels light. “You can’t say you’ll want me as your friend when it sounds like you’re practically proposing right now.”
“Sorry, I know,” Yoongi squeezes his hands back.
“Can I go?” Jungkook is shaking his head. “I want to go now, let me go next, hyung, please!”
“I wasn’t done!” Yoongi cackles at Jungkook’s giddiness. “But yeah, go ahead.”
Jungkook clears his throat, “Min Yoongi-ssi,” Jungkook says in a deep, stern voice, making Yoongi playfully slap him and Jungkook laugh even harder, “Ok, hyung. Yoongi-hyung. Oh, let me tell you the first moment, the first time I fell for you. It was the first day of Uni, and I was walking back to the apartment. And then I saw you on my way home, squatted next to a cat, trying to pet them. You looked so radiant as the sun set behind you, looked soft and hands gentle when the cat approached you to touch them. You smiled and I swear you were the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen. I took a picture of that moment and I never let you know because I thought I would never see you again.
But then you started to walk home and we were headed the same direction, but I had to stay a block behind because now it looked like I was stalking you after I took your picture like do you realize how awkward I felt when I saw you go to our apartment complex,” It’s Yoongi’s turn to laugh this time. “And then everything was history when Namjoon basically set us up. Jimin has had enough of me talking about you at night and Taehyung is dying to play with you in Animal Crossing because he thinks he would be stealing you unless I did something about my crush on you.”
“Is that why he won’t let me come over to his island unless you’re there?”
“That’s exactly the reason.”
“That’s so dumb, haha”
“I know, I told him that! But he wouldn’t listen! That’s whatever now, I don’t want to talk about Taehyung,” Jungkook licks his lips and Yoongi stares at them unconsciously. “I want to talk about us.”
“I want to talk about us too,” Yoongi purses his lips. “And I want you to be my boyfriend.”
“And I want you to be my boyfriend too.” Jungkook agrees.
“So we’re boyfriends now, I like that. I like that a lot.”
“I don’t want to talk us anymore, I wanna kiss you, can I kiss you now?” Jungkook eagerly asks.
“Yes you—WOAH,” Yoongi doesn’t finish his sentence when Jungkook pulls him onto his lap and kisses him full on his lips. Yoongi giggles against Jungkook’s lips and kisses him back with the same intensity when their mouths slot together perfectly. Jungkook holds onto Yoongi’s waist and Yoongi’s fingers thread through Jungkook’s hair as they continue to kiss softly and slowly on the couch. The moment is perfect, a time that Jungkook wants to capture with his camera, a moment Yoongi wants to sketch in his heart, but they have time, they have lots of time to do this with each other and that’s why they take their time now.
And then Namjoon ruins it when he opens the front door and lets them know he also bought Animal Crossing.
