Harry se réveille dans un corps de mortician anglais en pleine Blitz de Londres (25 août 1940). Il n'a plus de pouls ni de chaleur corporelle, se nourrit désormais d'énergie vitale/spirituelle, et cache son état sous une apparence humaine. Il se fait enregistrer administrativement (éliminant discrètement deux fonctionnaires récalcitrants) puis rejoint Poudlard sous le nom de "Harry Harlow", prétendant vouloir terminer sa scolarité. Dumbledore plaide sa cause auprès du directeur Dippet ; Harry est réparti à Serpentard. Le chapitre se clôt sur la révélation de son véritable objectif : gagner la confiance de Dumbledore avant de le détruire émotionnellement puis physiquement.Arc 2 — Vie à Poudlard et rencontre avec Tom Riddle (chap. 4 à 9)
Harry s'installe à Serpentard, impose le respect (voire la terreur) à ses camarades, dont Walburga Black. Il entame avec Dumbledore, en cours de Métamorphose, des joutes verbales sur la morale et le pouvoir, qui nourrissent sa haine froide envers l'homme. Il croise pour la première fois Tom Riddle, alors élève, et accepte d'entretenir une correspondance avec lui — tout en le snobant délibérément un temps. En parallèle, une série d'« attaques mystérieuses » à l'école (sous-entendu : la Chambre des Secrets orchestrée par Tom) cesse brusquement, sans qu'aucun coupable ne soit désigné. Harry et Dumbledore voyagent à Paris. Harry assiste ensuite au célèbre duel entre Dumbledore et Grindelwald : la Baguette de Sureau, échappant à son maître vaincu, vole vers Harry plutôt que vers Dumbledore. Harry brise la baguette, révèle son vrai visage et provoque la mort de Dumbledore, accomplissant enfin sa vengeance. Mais au lieu du soulagement attendu, il n'éprouve qu'un vide inchangé — sa quête de représailles n'a rien réparé en lui.Arc 4 — Vingt ans plus tard : retrouvailles et amour tragique (chap. 12 à 19)
Saut temporel dans les années 1960. Tom Riddle est devenu Lord Slytherin, une figure politique puissante et redoutée, mais — grâce à l'influence indirecte de Harry pendant leur jeunesse — n'est jamais devenu Voldemort : pas de meurtres, pas d'Horcruxes, pas de quête d'immortalité par la mort d'autrui. Plusieurs chapitres reviennent en flashback sur leur histoire commune vue du point de vue de Tom (leur premier échange dans le train, la scène de la lettre, un souvenir de l'orphelinat de Wool où Tom empoche l'or que Harry distribue). Harry et Tom se retrouvent par hasard près d'une boutique et deviennent amants, avec plusieurs scènes explicites (chap. 12, 14, 16). Leur relation se construit sur des années de fascination mutuelle, Tom n'ayant jamais percé le mystère de la véritable nature de Harry.
Le récit se termine tragiquement : Aberforth Dumbledore, cherchant à venger la mort de son frère Albus, attaque Harry avec un sortilège mortel. Tom se jette devant la malédiction pour le protéger et meurt dans ses bras. Harry élimine Aberforth en représailles, puis scelle les derniers instants de Tom d'un baiser glacé, recueillant symboliquement son dernier souffle. -

It doesn’t matter that she’s been through a war, had likely carried her two Gryffindor parasites through every battle, had been the most wanted Muggleborn in Britain. Everyone wants Hermione Granger in a box and now they are shocked and irate to find she no longer fits.
Or... Hermione Granger returns for 8th Year at Hogwarts, is forced to re-sort into Slytherin, and turns everyone's lives upside down.
