Time. Time made Zim realize that his original plan to overtake the Earthenoids wasn’t working because he didn’t blend in. Time helped him evaluate that he wasn’t considered ‘normal’ to the meat bags, which was why he couldn’t easily manipulate them to bend to his will. Time lead to self-reflection that although those disgusting sacks of flesh were stupid and just begging to be destroyed, even they noticed there was something wrong with him.
So Zim had left, packing up his home base and taking GIR with him to move as far away as possible from that horrific place where the Dib dwelled. Time quietly slipped away, and during that period Zim had carefully crafted a new look, a new name, and a new plan to take over the world.
It was all just a matter of time.

Ganina hasn't had to deal with this much responsibility since she thought she was going to be an inheritor of the Trevelyan family fortune and prestige. She'd gotten used to her found family, and then the explosion at the Conclave changed all of the plans she'd made, and took everyone she thought she'd had away.
I have a lot of this written, but a lot is still shady. I'll post as regularly as I can, but I'm also not super solid on how things are going to go. I also have a sneaky suspicion that this is going to be obscenely long.

Well, half, technically. It doesn't register at first because Norton's walked in to an eyeful of Luchino's very full chest—sun-kissed skin, slick with sweat. His arms, corded with lean muscle, rest at his sides, and his braided hair spills around his head like a halo. The greenhouse is suffocatingly humid and bathed in a fiery glow, tinting the fauna in the colours of autumn.
Norton stills as he drinks in the scene before him, the trowels he promised Emma quickly fleeing his mind to make room for more… inappropriate thoughts.
He blinks. Once. Twice. As if he isn't sure if what he's seeing is truly there. But Luchino does not vanish before him. He's still there even after Norton rubs his eyes.
