Ryland Grace died.
He died after failing to turn on the centrifuge in time, and took Rocky with him. He wakes up the morning he is to be approached by Eva Stratt.
Centuries pass. The failure of the Hail Mary has doomed humanity. Simon fails in obtaining the black box and bringing it to safety. He is given a second chance to save things, and is determined to stop the coward of a man named Ryland Grace from sabotaging the mission meant to save humanity.

Every step that widened the distance between them left a tangible ache in his chest. Shinobu had upped some of his medications recently, which he found himself grateful for; it meant all the chest-aching was purely emotional, and not his lungs trying to exit his body, or his heart forgetting it was meant to keep an even pace.
