Gods, what doesn’t he fear? There’s all the common things everyone’s afraid of – death is the big one, of course. Leaving Kira without a father, again, more permanently this time. That whatever he has with Holga – the bond between them, not romantic but something deeper than friendship, family, for all that they are not married nor related by blood – will end, and she will choose to go her own, separate ways. That he is not as good as he thinks – that the years of petty thievery and larceny have taken their toll, and the reason the infernal letters don’t fade for him is because, in his soul, they can tell that he is wicked, too.

Gem could hear a voice, strange but calm. She could hear people outside the rubble, searching for life after the incident.
“I don’t sense any survivors. The team has checked every building.” A voice belonging to Phantom, the #1 hero.
“Have you checked the cave behind the portal, Phantom?” The voice said.
The only reason why Gem survived. The cave was well hidden. Hidden enough that the monster didn’t even notice her breathing or heartbeat.
Gem jumped when leaves were pushed aside and threw her dagger at the intruder on instinct, just barely missing. The dagger G gave her.
“Damn… you have good aim. I’m going to ask Kuna about giving you a spot in the Milita.” Phantom muttered, barely dodging the dagger. “Where’s your parents?”
”Dead.” Gem’s voice was hard. “I don’t want to join the Milita anyway. They failed to save the village.”
Phantom raised an eyebrow, “No family at all? Aunts? Uncles? Siblings?”
Something compelled Gem to answer honestly.
”My older brother.” Gem whispered. “Grian.”

Apparently satisfied Moon is paying attention, Juan-jie lowers herself onto a stool and swipes expertly at the tablet she settles in her lap, navigating through text and images that pass by too quickly for Moon to make sense of. She adjusts her glasses with her pointer finger, flicking her eyes up to look at Moon.
“They told me it’s likely you won’t be able to speak for some time,” she says. “That’s fine. You have a lot to catch up on anyway, you’re better off listening while you recover.”
Moon doesn’t know who they are. She also doesn’t know what she’s recovering from. She—doesn’t know a lot, actually, now that she thinks about it. Juan-jie is here, though; she’s telling Moon that she can just listen, she doesn’t have to give her any answers.
That… wrankles. For some reason she can’t put her finger on.
