After her breakup with Satoru one year ago, she’s been rejecting marriage offers while struggling to maintain her academy and establish a metalbending force. But being freshly twenty-five without a husband or political backing has left Toph socially vulnerable.
A fake courtship should solve both their problems. It will give Zuko a break from court pressure, a chance to organically find a Fire Lady and make a love-match, and deter opposing factions. It will give Toph a break from familial pressure, a powerful tool to advance her academic and career goals, and deter suitors. Everything will be practical, temporary, and completely false.
Unfortunately, Toph and Zuko have never been good at doing what they’re supposed to.
