Two years after hacking its governor module, SecUnit003/"Three"/"Theo" is enrolled at the Pan-System University of Mihira & New Tideland because... reasons. It would, honestly, much rather be riding wormholes and liberating constructs and helping its friends aboard Perihelion, but it has a mission and needs to see it through.
It also has several humans students that it is trying to be friends with for... reasons.
And, if those reasons involve it having limited feed access, disabling its weaponry, and generally having to refute its basic function to try and accomplish this mission then...

The governor module rudely reminded me about the pending command. I closed the logs and finally looked at the Target Package.
The package with my memories. The memories that the rogue me had encrypted and locked before it had been captured by the company. The memories that the company really wanted to get so they could see who was standing behind the rogue me’s actions, and whether or not they had the legal grounds to start a war with Preservation Alliance and Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland.
The memories that the hostiles hoped my organics remembered how to access.
The company managed to capture Murderbot, take its memories, and install a brand new model of the governor module. They think they have everything under control. They don't.

I’d probably have to summarily execute an employee or two, that’s what new directors always did when new in power, show people you meant business and didn’t tolerate stupidity, I assumed. I never actually knew why they did it or told me to do it for them. Regardless, aside from the witless executions, which I hated, it would be great! Sure it was odd that he used a pseudo name to purchase me instead of the Company Name, but that couldn’t mean much, could it?

After Murderbot attempts to steal data files from a mining company called DeseForm, they send a Combat SecUnit after it. The CombatUnit experiences a new emotion and makes a decision that will change its life. It learns that socializing is hard, making decisions is hard, and trying new things is hard. Will it find a way to make freedom worthwhile when its former handler haunts its every thought?
