Suddenly, Sephiroth understood, saw through Hojo’s words to the pain beneath. And he felt a pang of sympathy before the memory of years of torture, culminating in hopeless, agony-filled darkness, drove it away. There was no one less deserving of sympathy than the monster in front of him.
He turned back to Hojo, held his gaze as he spoke, his own burning with the fire Hojo always seemed to stoke within him. “Love saved me.”
Sephiroth decides to confront Hojo in Junon after all, before he's put to death. The answers he gets about his mother start him on a journey to find her.
