“How’s the kid?” Adam asked after another puff, breaking the silence again. His tone was casual, but there was a flicker of genuine curiosity there.
“He’s stable,” Amanda replied, exhaling a long stream of smoke. “Gordon’s keeping an eye on him. But it’s… weird, seeing him like that.”
Adam nodded, leaning his head back against the wall. “Yeah, I bet. But he’ll be alright, right? That’s the plan.”
Amanda nodded, her gaze distant. “Yeah, that’s the plan.”
There was a beat of quiet again, the two of them lost in their own thoughts. Then Adam, as usual, couldn’t resist getting in one more dig.
“You know, for someone who’s always in control, you sure seem attached to the kid,” he remarked, his tone half-teasing, half-serious.
Amanda stiffened slightly but covered it with a shrug. “It’s not that.”
“Right,” Adam muttered, smirking as he took another drag. “Keep telling yourself that.”
She shot him a look, but he just grinned, unbothered. The smoke curled lazily between them, the moment oddly peaceful despite the weight hanging in the air.

He kisses the pile of blankets that Adam is buried under, right at the point where he must guess Adam’s head is.
Adam pokes his face out, looking at the older man with tearful eyes.
He must look like shit. He hasn’t showered, or put on deodorant, or brushed his hair. He knows his eyes must look puffy and his nose must be runny and his cheeks must be red from all the crying.
“Oh, sweetheart,” Lawrence says softly. “It’s been one of those days, huh?”
Adam doesn’t know what he finds more comforting. The fact that Lawrence immediately understands without Adam explaining himself, or the fact that Lawrence called him sweetheart.
