What kind of statistics does the Archive of Our Own track?

The Archive of Our Own (AO3) tracks many different kinds of statistics for you. Examples of statistics include word count, kudos, number of bookmarks for a work, user or work subscriptions, and hits. If you have an AO3 account, you can access information about your works listed on your Statistics page. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? Your statistics can be displayed in various ways, such as for all your works, works belonging to a particular fandom, or a single work. The Statistics page is the only place you'll find data grouped across multiple works.

For any individual work, the Statistics page has almost the same information that you will find on that work's blurb. For details on when the information may differ, refer to Why are the statistics on the Statistics page different from the work blurb?

In general, AO3 organizes and tracks statistics by either work, series, or AO3 user via the Statistics page. For more information on each of these, check out What do work statistics track?, What do series statistics track?, and What does the Statistics page track?

If you have your History turned on, AO3 will also track when and how often you've visited a given work. For more information, check out the History and Mark for Later FAQ.

For privacy reasons, any further statistics that track a user's personal information, habits, or activity on the site aren't available.

What do work statistics track?

Work statistics include:

Work statistics are available to all visitors who can access the work, whether or not they have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account.

Where do I find work statistics?

Work statistics can be found on the work's blurb, which is available on a fandom's page, a tag's page, a user's works' page, a collection's page, or in search results. They can also be found at the top of a specific work's page, listed next to "Stats:". For more information on what work statistics are tracked, check out What do work statistics track?

If you have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account, you can also find statistics for your works and account on your Statistics page.

What do series statistics track?

Series statistics include:

Series statistics are visible to all visitors who can access the series, whether or not they have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account. However, these statistics may differ for a guest user vs. a user with an AO3 account. To learn more, check out What is the difference between work statistics and series statistics?

Where do I find series statistics?

Statistics for a series can be found on the series' blurb. They can also be found at the top of a specific series page listed next to "Stats:", which can be accessed from a given work in the series' blurb, or the creator's Series page.

To access your own Series page:

  1. Log in and go to your dashboard by selecting the greeting "Hi, [username]!" and choosing "My Dashboard" from the menu, or by selecting your profile image.
  2. Select "Series" from the menu found at the side of the page or at the top on a mobile device.

You can also access other users' Series pages as follows:

  1. Go to any user's dashboard by selecting their username from anywhere on the site, such as from a work or comment, or by searching for a user directly. For instructions on how to do a user search, check out How can I find works or bookmarks by a particular user? in the Search and Browse FAQ.
  2. Select "Series" from the menu found at the side of the page or at the top of a mobile device.

What does the Statistics page track?

If you have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account, your own work and account statistics can be found on the Statistics page. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page?

Statistics tracked on the Statistics page include:

The Statistics page is the only place you can find information about your subscriptions and user subscriptions. It's also the only place you can find your statistics grouped across multiple works and across all your pseuds. These statistics can be displayed in various ways, such as for all your works, works belonging to a particular fandom, works published in a single year, or a single work. However, you can't separate out a work's statistics by chapter.

Where do I find the Statistics page?

To access your Statistics page:

  1. Log in and go to your dashboard by selecting the greeting "Hi, [username]!" and choosing "My Dashboard" from the menu, or by selecting your profile image.
  2. Select "Statistics" from the menu found at the side of the page or at the top on a mobile device.

You can't access the Statistics pages of other users.

How are user subscriptions tracked?

User subscriptions are the number of users subscribed to your account, which is only listed in the Totals box on your Statistics page. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page?

User subscriptions are for your account and can't be filtered by individual pseuds or fandoms. This number will always reflect the current number of AO3 users subscribed to you, no matter which year you're filtering by. User subscriptions aren't the same as work or series subscriptions. For more information on the distinction, refer to How are subscriptions and user subscriptions statistics tracked differently? How are subscriptions tracked?

The number of subscriptions in the Totals box on your Statistics page (refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? for instructions on how to get there) is the total number of subscriptions from all your works across all your pseuds. This includes any anonymous or unrevealed works by your account but doesn't include any series subscriptions. Selecting one of the individual year buttons above the box instead of the default "All Years" button will display the current total number of subscriptions (and other statistics) for works last updated in that year.

To find how many subscriptions there are on each of your works, navigate to your Statistics page and go to that specific work's statistics underneath the chart. Subscription statistics can only be found on the Statistics page. While AO3 users can subscribe to a series, the series' creator can't access this statistic. To learn more about how work and series statistics differ, check out What is the difference between work statistics and series statistics?

User subscriptions aren't the same as work or series subscriptions. For more information on the distinction, refer to How are subscriptions and user subscriptions statistics tracked differently? How are kudos tracked?

The number of kudos a work has is indicated on the work's blurb. For your own works, the number of kudos is also indicated on your Statistics page beside the work's title. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? For details on when the information may differ, check out Why are the statistics on the Statistics page different from the work blurb?

The number of kudos in the Totals box on your Statistics page is the total number of kudos from all your works across all your pseuds. This includes any anonymous or unrevealed works. Selecting one of the individual year buttons above the box instead of the default "All Years" button will display the total number of kudos (and other statistics) for works last updated in that year.

To find how many kudos there are on each of your works, navigate to your Statistics page and go to that specific work's statistics underneath the chart. How are comments and comment threads tracked?

Comment statistics are tracked in two ways: by number of comments and number of comment threads.

The comment statistic tracked and displayed in each work's blurb is the total number of comments on that work, including all replies. However, the comment statistic tracked on your Statistics page for your own works (refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? for instructions on how to get there) only counts individual comment threads, irrespective of how many replies each one contains. A single comment counts as one comment thread, as does one comment with 50 replies. Therefore, tracking comment threads can give a better sense of how many separate conversations are taking place on one work. Comment thread statistics are only available on the Statistics page, and therefore only for your own works.

The number of comment threads in the Totals box on your Statistics page is the total number of comment threads from all your works across all your pseuds. This includes any anonymous or unrevealed works, as well as any unreviewed comments on moderated works. Selecting one of the individual year buttons above the box instead of the default "All Years" button will display the total number of comment threads (and other statistics) for works last updated in that year.

To find how many comment threads there are on each of your works, navigate to your Statistics page, and go to that specific work's statistics underneath the chart. Comments can't be given or tracked specifically for a series; they can only be given to individual works within the series. To learn more about how work and series statistics differ, check out What is the difference between work statistics and series statistics?

Comments marked as spam don't count towards the total number of comments in a work.

How are bookmarks tracked?

Bookmarks can be public or private, which affects how their statistics are tracked. The number of bookmarks indicated on a work's blurb is the number of public bookmarks of the work. On the other hand, the number of bookmarks in the Totals box and beside each work on your Statistics page (refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? for instructions on how to get there) is the total number of bookmarks of your works, including private bookmarks. The number of public series bookmarks is indicated on the individual series page or on the creator's Series page (refer to Where do I find series statistics? for instructions on how to get there). However, users, including the series' creator, can't access the total number of series bookmarks (including private bookmarks). How is word count tracked?

The word count for an individual work is indicated in the work's blurb. For your own works, the same word count is also available on the Statistics page beside the work's title. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page?

The word count in the Totals box on your Statistics page is the total number of words from all your works across all your pseuds. This includes any anonymous or unrevealed works. Selecting one of the individual year buttons above the box instead of the default "All Years" button will display the total word count (and other statistics) for works and individual chapters posted in that year.

To find the word count for each of your works, navigate to your Statistics page, and go to that specific work's statistics underneath the chart. The total word count for all the works within a series is indicated on the individual series page or on the creator's Series page (refer to Where do I find series statistics? for instructions on how to get there). How are hits tracked?

Hits are a count of how many times a work has been accessed. A hit is registered every time a visitor navigates to a work's page, with the following exceptions:

  • Visiting a work from the same IP address multiple times within 24 hours will only register as one hit.
  • Moving between chapters in a work will only register one hit in total, not one hit per chapter.
  • Visiting your own works while logged in won't count as hits.

Hits only log the number of visits to a work, not the duration of the visit.

Unlike for works, the total hits for a series isn't an available statistic. To learn more about how work and series statistics differ, check out What is the difference between work statistics and series statistics?

If you have your History turned on, your History page will also track hits for all works you've accessed. This is indicated under each work blurb as "Visited [number] times", along with the date you last accessed the work, if any changes were made since then, and if the work is in your Marked for Later. For more information on this, check out the History and Marked for Later FAQ.

How is completion status tracked?

The Archive of Our Own (AO3) tracks completion status for both works and series. A work or series' completion status can either be in progress or complete.

A work is complete when its creator(s) indicates all chapters have been posted. While the default number of chapters for a work is one, you can always change a work's chapter count. Check out How do I indicate that a work will have more than one chapter? in the Posting and Editing FAQ to learn how.

A work's completion status is indicated on AO3 in several ways:

  • The work's chapter count is marked as complete if the total expected number of chapters have all been published. For example, a work expected to have five chapters total would be indicated with "Chapters: 5/5" when it's completed. If a work is in progress, the number of published chapters will either be less than the expected number of total chapters (for example, "Chapters: 2/5") or indicate a question mark instead of an expected total number of chapters (for example, "Chapters: 1/?").
  • The bottom right icon in the two-by-two grid to the left of a work's title in its blurb indicates completion status.
    • A green box with a check mark if it's a complete work Complete Work
    • A red box with a circle and a backslash through it if it's a work in progress Work in Progress
  • At the top of a specific work's page, an incomplete work will list its last updated date next to "Updated:", while complete works will replace the word "Updated:" with "Completed:". If the work is complete and only has a single chapter, a completed date won't be listed, only a published date.

A series is complete when its creator(s) marks it complete. The default completion status for a series is incomplete, but you can always mark it as complete, even if there is only one work in the series. To learn how, check out How do I mark a series complete? in the Series FAQ.

Similarly, completion status is also indicated for series as follows:

  • At the top of a specific series' page, its completion status is indicated next to "Complete:" as either "Yes" or "No".
  • The bottom right icon in the two-by-two grid to the left of a series' title in its blurb will either be:
    • A green box with a check mark if it's a complete series Complete Work
    • A red box with a circle and a backslash through it if it's a series in progress Work in Progress

What is the difference between work statistics and series statistics?

Statistics on the Archive of Our Own (AO3) are tracked for both individual works and for series. For more details on what statistics are tracked for each, check out What do work statistics track? and What do series statistics track?

Work statistics can be found on each work, the work's blurb or if it's your work, on your Statistics page (refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? for instructions on how to get there). On the other hand, series statistics can be found for each series on the individual series page or on the creator's Series page (refer to Where do I find series statistics? for instructions on how to get there). Series statistics aren't included on the Statistics page.

The following statistics are tracked only for works, not for the series as a whole:

The following statistics are tracked separately for both individual works and the series as a whole:

For a series, the published date (listed next to "Series Begun" on top of a series page) is the earliest date any of the works within the series was initially published. The updated date (listed next to "Series Updated" on top of a series' page) is the most recent date any of the works within the series was last updated. Neither of these dates depends on the order of the works within the series. A series' word count is the total word count for all the works in the series. A series' bookmarks only counts public bookmarks for that series as a whole, not the sum of all individual work bookmarks within the series. While AO3 users can subscribe to and make private bookmarks of series, total bookmarks (including private bookmarks) and subscriptions for a series aren't available statistics.

Series statistics also track the number of works currently in the series. If there are both public works and works locked to AO3 users within a series, only the public works' statistics will be indicated to a non-AO3 user. This affects the published and updated date, total word count, and number of works in the series. Can I find out who subscribes to me?

There's no way to find out who is subscribed to you, but you can find out how many people are subscribed to you or your works.

User subscriptions are the number of users subscribed to your account, which is listed in the Totals box on your Statistics page. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? For more information on user subscriptions, refer to How are user subscriptions tracked?

The number of subscribers for any individual work can be found further down on the Statistics page next to the work's title. For example, it might say "Subscriptions: 5". If a work doesn't have any subscribers, there will be no "Subscriptions" section displayed next to the work. For more information on subscriptions, refer to How are subscriptions tracked?

While you can't find out who is subscribed to you, you can find the list of users you're currently subscribed to. To learn how to do this, check out How can I manage my subscriptions? in the Subscriptions and Feeds FAQ.

How are subscriptions and user subscriptions statistics tracked differently?

Subscriptions and user subscriptions are two different statistics for tracking how many Archive of Our Own (AO3) users are following you and your works on AO3. Subscriptions are a way to track new updates to an existing work or series, while user subscriptions are a way to track all new works or chapters posted by a user. Subscriptions are tracked per work while user subscriptions are tracked per account, both of which are available statistics on your Statistics page. While AO3 users can subscribe to a series, the series' creator can't access this statistic.

If an AO3 user is subscribed to both your work and your account, they'll count under both your work's subscriptions and your user subscription statistics. However, they'll only receive one email alert if the work updates. Why are the statistics on the Statistics page different from the work blurb?

The work blurb may indicate different statistics than what is shown on your Statistics page because of caching, comment threads, or private bookmarks.

The Statistics page will always indicate the most up-to-date statistics when compared to the work blurb because the Statistics page isn't cached. A cached page is a temporary copy made of the page to access it more quickly. The statistics on a cached work blurb refresh less often, which may lead to a difference between the two pages. For example, a newly posted work may indicate zero hits and two kudos, even though the Statistics page indicates 20 hits and three kudos.

The Statistics page tracks the number of comment threads while work blurbs track the number of comments. For more information on what comment threads are, check out What is a comment thread? Why is the bookmark count different on the Statistics page than on the work blurb?

The work blurb indicates a different bookmark count because the work blurb only indicates the number of public bookmarks for that work. The Statistics page indicates the total number of bookmarks for each work, including private bookmarks, which are only accessible by the user who created them.

Can I find out who has bookmarked my work(s)?

You can find the list of people who've made public bookmarks for a specific work from its blurb, which is available on a fandom's page, a tag's page, a user's works' page, a collection's page, or in search results. They can also be found at the top of a specific work's page, listed next to "Stats:". For example, a work's blurb might say "Bookmarks: 9". The number will be a link, which you can select to access a list of all of the public bookmarks for the work.

However, private bookmarks can't be tracked this way. If there's no "Bookmarks" section in a work's blurb, that means that it has no public bookmarks, even if it may have private bookmarks indicated on the Statistics page. How can I sort or filter statistics?

The statistics for your own works can be sorted on your Statistics page in a number of ways. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page?

The Statistics page includes all your works published on the Archive of Our Own (AO3) across all your pseuds. You can sort your statistics by the works' date of last update, number of hits, number of kudos, number of comment threads, number of bookmarks, number of subscriptions, or word count, in ascending or descending order. These "Sort by" options are available as buttons in the default site skin below the Totals section and above the list of works. The selected button indicates which option you're currently sorting by. By default, this page is sorted by hits in descending order for all years, separated by fandom in "Fandom View". You can also choose to combine all your works together and then sort them by selecting "Flat View". For more information on "Fandom View" and "Flat View", refer to How can I group my statistics? Statistics can't be sorted or filtered by individual chapters or by a given pseud.

Each option has an arrow marker which indicates whether the works are sorted in ascending order (lowest to highest), indicated with an arrow pointing up, or in descending order (highest to lowest), indicated with an arrow pointing down. To change from ascending to descending or vice versa, select the option again (in the default skin, choose the selected button).

You can also filter your Statistics page to display statistics for works last updated in a specific year. These options are available as buttons in the default skin located above the Totals section. You can also select a year (or "All Years") and then sort your statistics by one of the options listed above. You will only have the option to filter by years if you have at least one work last updated during that year.

When you filter your statistics by a certain year, only the works that were posted or updated during that year will appear. However, the statistics for the filtered works will reflect the current total statistics for the work. For example, if you filter by the year 2019, a work updated in 2019 will display statistics as of right now, not as of 2019. The chart underneath your Totals box indicates your top five works based on the statistic you're currently sorting by. By default, this is in descending order by hits across all fandoms. By sorting by a different statistic, changing the order, or filtering by a specific year, the five works featured on the chart will change accordingly. However, this chart can't be filtered by fandom.

All works, not just your own, can also be sorted by statistics on other pages, such as a fandom's page or on a search results page.

How are my yearly statistics organized?

Works on your Statistics page can be filtered by the year they were posted or updated. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page? When you post an update to an existing work during a new year for the first time, that work, along with its statistics, will now also appear on that new year on your Statistics page. The statistics found on works under each year will include all statistics for that work, such as kudos and bookmarks. However, the word count for the work under each year will only include the word count from chapters posted that year.

When a year filter is applied, the statistics in the Totals box will reflect current statistics for all works updated in the selected year, not statistics from the year you're filtering by. However, user subscriptions in this box will always reflect the current total number of users subscribed to you, since that isn't linked to any specific work. Additionally, the word count in this box will only include words from works and chapters posted during that year.

For example, suppose it is March 13, 2023 and you currently have three published works: "we were special back then", a work completed in 2020, "Sam's Prompt Fills", an incomplete work with 2 chapters posted in 2020, and "No rest for the wicked!!", a completed work from January 2023. Filtering on the Statistics page for the year 2020 will return the combined statistics for "we were special back then" and "Sam's Prompt Fills" as of March 13, 2023. Filtering for the year 2023 will only return statistics for "No rest for the wicked!!", also as of March 13, 2023.

Later on December 4, 2023, you decide to publish chapter 3 of "Sam's Prompt Fills". Now when you filter for the year 2020, it will return the combined statistics for "we were special back then" and "Sam's Prompt Fills" as of December 4, 2023. Filtering for the year 2023 will return the combined statistics as of December 4, 2023 for "Sam's Prompt Fills" and "No rest for the wicked!!". The statistics next to "Sam's Prompt Fills" will be as of December 4, 2023 whether you are filtering for the year 2020 or 2023, except for word count. "Sam's Prompt Fills" will only show the total word count from the first 2 chapters when filtering for the year 2020, and only the word count for chapter 3 when filtering for the year 2023.

To check which works are counted in a given year's statistics on the Statistics page, filter for the year in question, and the included works will be listed below the Totals box.

How can I group my statistics?

The statistics for your own works can either be grouped by fandom or all together (regardless of fandom, known as "Flat View") on your Statistics page. For instructions on how to get there, refer to Where do I find the Statistics page?

The "Fandoms View" and "Flat View" are options (buttons in the default site skin) located underneath the Totals section and above the list of works. By default, statistics are grouped by "Fandoms View". When you select "Fandoms View", your works and their statistics will be grouped under their fandom. For works that are tagged with multiple fandoms, the works will appear once for each of the fandoms they're tagged with. For example, if you tag a work with both "呪術廻戦 | Jujutsu Kaisen (Anime)" and "呪術廻戦 | Jujutsu Kaisen (Manga)", each fandom will have a separate section on your Statistics page, and the work will appear once underneath each fandom and displaying the same statistics. You can also choose to group all your statistics together regardless of fandom using the "Flat View" option. When you select "Flat View", all your work statistics will be grouped under the heading "All Fandoms", instead of separately by fandom. Each work and their statistics will only appear once here, even if that work is tagged with more than one fandom.

When you sort your statistics, they'll be sorted per fandom under "Fandom View", or all together under "Flat View". For example, if you sort by hits in descending order, it'll display your works with most to least hits per fandom under "Fandoms View", but works with most to least hits overall under "Flat View".
