Pettigrew cast a blasting charm at the gas main and Sirius was thrown back, momentarily stunned by the concussion. Bodies -- a dozen Muggle bodies -- lay strewn on the street. Sirius blinked madly and saw Pettigrew -- no longer Peter, never again Peter -- transform into his rat form and escape into the sewer.
The first 'pop' of Apparition meant the Aurors were there and Sirius, seeing what Pettigrew had just done, transformed into Padfoot. He scurried to a nearby alley to watch. There were Aurors he knew not to trust -- they would stun first and ask questions later.
"What the fuck happened here?" A junior Auror Sirius only vaguely knew demanded answers as he looked at the Muggle bodies. From their stillness, Sirius assumed they were all dead. These unnecessary deaths were something else to lay at Pettigrew's feet.
A shrug. "Couple of wizards must have gotten into a fight," the senior Auror - Smithers was by-the-book and unimaginative, something Sirius knew from experience - replied as he cast a spell to gather magical signatures. Luckily, Sirius had used the secondary wand that Moody had taught them to carry. They'd never find him from the information they were collecting.
He wondered if they'd be able to identify Pettigrew. Sirius wondered if Pettigrew would think to own a secondary wand. He could only hope Pettigrew would be identified as the culprit.
Harry! Merlin! Hagrid had taken Harry to Hogwarts and to Dumbledore. How could he forget that? Sirius frowned. Dumbledore knew perfectly well that Pettigrew was the Secret Keeper for James and Lily. If Pettigrew was the one who revealed the Potter's location to Voldemort, what part did Dumbledore have in all of this?
Lily had -- loudly and often -- voiced her concern about Dumbledore's plan and now she was dead.
Fool me once... Sirius thought to himself.
He withdrew from the scene as more Aurors arrived to do the Obliviation on the Muggle watchers and, once he knew he was out of sight, ran to an Apparition point. He had to get to Harry.
Once in Hogsmeade, Sirius changed back to Padfoot. He didn't know who he could trust at this point and needed to be as inconspicuous as possible. Luckily, Honeydukes was still open. Before entering the store, he changed back to Sirius but Disillusioned himself as well as setting a Notice-Me-Not on himself. He had to hope the store had minimal warding and his stealth wouldn't set off any alarms. He barely breathed until he made his way safely into the basement.
He slipped into the tunnel and then transformed back into Padfoot to be able to run to the school. Something was telling him he was running out of time.
Easing out of the tunnel, Sirius kept to the shadows, wondering at how empty the halls were. Even if it was Samhain, there should be students or teachers wandering about. It was just past curfew and Sirius knew from his own experience that didn't mean everyone was in their common rooms. He, James, and Remus had spent more time out of Gryffindor Tower than in it, especially in their last year.
Making an educated guess on where Harry might be, Sirius headed toward the infirmary.
Sirius waited in the shadow, listening to see who might be inside. He wished he had their Map, so he would know for sure who was inside. Another sin to lay at Pettigrew's feet since it was his fault Filch had confiscated it.
Hearing only Harry's restless sobs, Sirius went inside. He transformed back to Sirius.
"Hey, pup," Sirius said softly.
"Paddy!" Harry sobbed, holding up his arms. Sirius noted the still oozing cut on Harry's forehead, wondering why it had not been attended to.
"Oh, Harry," Sirius said gently. "It'll be okay."
Harry whimpered and held tightly on to Sirius' shirt.
"Let's get out of here," Sirius decided. He now knew better than to trust whatever plan Dumbledore had and needed to get away before Madame Pomfrey came back.
"Sorry, pup," Sirius said as he drew his wand. "Ynpnos." Harry fell asleep. "Can't have you giving us away."
Sirius grabbed a blanket from the bed and transfigured it into a sling to allow him to carry Harry close to his body while leaving his hands free. He eased out of the infirmary and went back to the statue of the one-eyed witch. He hurried back to Honeydukes.
The shop was closed at this point, so there was no one to see him come up into the basement. He unlocked a back door and hurried out into the street. Once free of the building, he moved to Apparate, then hesitated.
Where should he go?
Damn it all! He didn't have a safe place! James' parents had died ten months ago and Potter Manor was entailed to allow only the family to access the grounds. He doubted that Harry could access the property until he was older. Lily's parents were Muggles and he wasn't sure they could be trusted. Lily's sister had been horrid at the wedding and he knew better than even to try to contact Petunia. His own mother would turn him away without allowing any explanation. Harry was a Half-Blood and would be automatically despised.
Grandfather. Maybe? Sirius didn't feel confident enough to try. Grandfather was equally likely to turn them away or call the Ministry, as to take them in.
Remus! Sirius frowned in thought. He didn't know where Remus would be. He looked up to the sky to see the new moon.
Sirius hesitated before Apparating to London, near the apartment he lived in. He had originally shared it with James and Remus when they were all fresh out of Hogwarts, but he was the only one living there right now. Pettigrew knew where it was and Sirius had to hope that Pettigrew wouldn't think to look for Sirius there. If Pettigrew would look for him at all. Sirius shook himself. It was his only option for the moment.
Once inside, Sirius activated the limited wards around the apartment. It wouldn't keep a powerful wizard out but it would give Sirius time to organize some belongings before he fled.
He lay Harry down on a bed and took a breath. He needed time to think but he wasn't sure he had it. Harry stirred restlessly for a moment before settling back to sleep. The charm would last about another hour, which gave Sirius a time limit to do what needed to be done. He didn't want to over-use the charm, he didn't know what it would do to a small child.
First of all, make sure he was safe. He cast a charm to see if there were any tracking charms on his clothes or belongings. He had long ago removed any Ministry-related charms from his personal wand, even though its magical signature was on file. But nothing showed up. At some point, he'd need to take a Flushing Draught to make sure there was nothing impinging on his Magic.
Sirius unearthed his trunk from the closet and started packing everything he could. He wasn't sure where he was going just as yet, so he took almost everything he had on hand -- clothes, robes, and school mementos. He also took the limited foodstuff and kitchenware from the apartment, since he didn't know if or when he'd be back. He had just paid the rent, so it would be at least another month before the landlord would come looking for him.
Knowing he was running out of time, Sirius took a breath and cast a Patronus.
Moony, where are you? I need some help and we can't trust Pettigrew or Dumbledore. Pack for a long trip. Meet me tomorrow in Paris at noon where we went with James. If you're not there, I'll leave without you.
Sirius sent the Grim off. He shrunk the trunk to put in a pocket, picked up Harry and took one, final, look around.
Sirius wasn't quite powerful enough to directly Apparate to Paris, but -- he really should send Mooney a thank you note for all the tricks he was using today -- the Marauders had figured out how to get around their limits. He made the first hop to Brighton on the south shore of Britain.
He checked Harry, who was starting to stir, and then made the longer hop to Rouen, France. Harry frowned, obviously unhappy at the sensations. Sirius held Harry close and made the last hop to Paris. Harry started to cry.
"Hang on, pup. We're done for now," Sirius soothed. "I need to walk for a bit but we're done with Apparating. It'll be fine." Sirius kept up a soothing babble as he walked to the hotel they had stayed at one summer while they were students at Hogwarts. Again, not totally Pettigrew-proof but he knew Pettigrew didn't have the power to do the chain Apparition on his own. James had brought Pettigrew in an Along-Side Apparition the one time he had come to Paris with them.
Luckily, the Muggle hotel had a room available and no one asked any questions as Sirius checked in with a small child. Sirius was comfortable in speaking French, albeit with a British accent, thanks to the Black family insistence on being conversant in at least the Romance languages from a young age. He winced, thinking of Regulus who had started working on learning Japanese and Indian. He suppressed the thought, he had to focus on Harry.
In the room, Sirius unwrapped Harry from the sling. "Okay, I think someone needs a new nappy. Good thing your mama made sure we all learned how to change that."
Sirius would have to stop by a store for nappies. And clothes. And toys. Harry had nothing, he realized. Some things could wait but he'd need at least a few things today. He Transfigured a shirt to a nappy to make Harry comfortable. He used the tub in the room to wash Harry up, not knowing when Harry's last bath had been.
He needed to clean the wound on Harry's forehead. He cast a small diagnostic charm on Harry but didn't come up with anything abnormal. He dabbed at the wound with a washcloth, removing the crusted blood. If it didn't heal soon, he'd have to risk going to a Healer.
"Mama?" Harry asked.
"Sorry, pup," Sirius said softly. "Mama won't be coming."
"Papa?"
"Just me," Sirius said. "Only Paddy."
Harry's lower lip wobbled for a moment and Sirius was at a loss on how to explain that Lily and James were not coming back.
Sirius finished up the bath, grateful for the fluffy towels in the room.
"Hungry?" Sirius asked.
Harry nodded. "Aps!" Harry said cheerfully.
"We'll find you some apples," Sirius promised, knowing there was nothing fresh in the food in his trunk. "Hang in there."
He didn't leave the trunk, not wanting to lose the few resources he had if he had to leave quickly. The woman at the front desk recommended a cafe down the avenue that would be family friendly.
Luckily, the waitress understood about hungry children and brought a dish of apple slices to the table, along with Sirius' coffee. Harry happily munched on the apple as Sirius' meal was prepared. Sirius shared his chips and hamburger with Harry, who ate hungrily.
There was a small store across the road and Sirius was able to purchase nappies, a couple of t-shirts, and a stuffed rabbit. He threw in a sippy-cup to make beverages easier for both of them.
"Bun," Harry said as he took the toy.
"That's right, pup," Sirius nodded. "It's a bunny."
"Bun," Harry said, hugging the bunny to his chest.
"And I guess its name is Bun," Sirius grinned. "Okay, it's been a long couple of days and I think we both need some sleep."
"No seep!" Harry protested.
"Well, you can lie down with your Paddy, then," Sirius said cheerfully.
Sirius got himself ready for bed and changed Harry into one of the t-shirts he bought, making the shirt into a sleeper. He cast some charms they had learned when the had found out that Lily was pregnant. There was a charm for the bed so that Harry couldn't get off, and one that would stop Sirius from rolling on Harry as they slept in the bed together.
Harry woke once in the night, wanting Lily. Sirius soothed him the best he could and they both eventually fell asleep again. In the morning, Sirius cleaned Harry up and they went back to the same restaurant for breakfast.
SInce check-out was at eleven, Sirius checked out and waited in the lobby until noon, hoping against hope that Remus would show up. Sirius waited until quarter past before giving a gusty sigh and making his way out to the street.
"Siri!"
Sirius turned to the sound of his name. Remus came hurrying up to him, breathing heavily. "Wait! I'm sorry I'm late. I got stopped by Dumbledore and couldn't get away."
"Did you tell him you were meeting me?" Sirius asked, alarmed.
"I didn't but he asked a couple of times if I knew where you were," Remus admitted. He looked. "How do you have Harry?"
"It's a long story. And we have to leave. Now," Sirius said. "Trust me?"
Remus nodded. "Always."
Sirius stepped to a small niche and cast a Notice-Me-Not to give them some privacy. He cast on Remus' robe and swore. Someone -- likely Dumbledore -- had cast a tracking charm on Remus. With another silent thanks to Moody, Sirius removed the charm and transferred it to the building they were standing next to. It would give away their current location but Sirius planned to be long gone by the time anyone followed them.
"You had a tracking charm on you, which I have to assume Dumbledore put it there," Sirius said. "We don't have much time."
Remus' eyes went wide. "What's going on?"
"We have to get to the travel office and get out of Paris immediately," Sirius said. "I don't think Dumbledore can Apparate here directly, but he won't be long."
"But..."
"Moony. Let's go!" Sirius said firmly.
Remus huffed but followed gamely.
In the Paris transportation office, Remus asked, "Where are we going?"
Sirius had had time to think overnight. "We'll get a portkey to Istanbul first. Then we'll get another portkey from there."
"All right," Remus said.
Sirius was glad when Remus didn't ask about their final destination.
Sirius was reckless with the money he had, knowing it was well spent in getting them away from Dumbledore. He bought the expensive last-minute portkey ticket to Istanbul for the three of them.
In Istanbul, Sirius asked the transportation clerk for a referral to a hotel. He checked them in, to give an unhappy Harry a chance to settle down. He changed Harry and settled Harry on the bed for a nap.
Sirius would nap when they were safe.
And he needed a chance to talk to Remus.
"Okay, now that Harry's asleep, what is going on?" Remus demanded.
Sirius ran a hand over his face. He started with the fight with Pettigrew and his escape from the scene, where he realized that Pettigrew had given James and Lily's location away to Voldemort.
"Are you sure?" Remus asked, stricken.
Sirius nodded. "He admitted it to me."
"You can take that memory to..."
"To whom? Even with the memory, who will believe me over the great Albus Dumbledore?" Sirius asked, sarcasm evident as he said Dumbledore's name.
Remus winced.
"So we're going into hiding," Sirius said. "At least until we can breathe for a bit and see what happens next."
"All right," Remus nodded.
"Just all right?" Sirius asked.
"Well, I'd like to know more but at this point, we're doing fine and Harry is safe. I'm still catching up, so I don't have anything that I can offer to stop you."
"Fair enough," Sirius nodded.
"So, what now?"
"There's a Gringott's branch here," Sirius admitted. "I've used most of the cash I had on hand to get us this far. So I'd like to get some galleons, as well as Muggle money, from my vault. We also need to protect Harry and see if we can get access to Lily and James' will."
"You're his godfather, you should be able to request that," Remus nodded.
"I just have this feeling that Dumbledore has something up his sleeve," Sirius said.
"Then let's get to the bank as soon as Harry wakes from his nap," Remus suggested. "No sense in waiting."
"That was my plan," Sirius said. "All of this travel and losing his parents has upset Harry. But it can't be avoided. I'm hoping we can settle down in a couple of days and we'll take time to make longer term plans."
"How about I find us some food while Harry is sleeping?" Remus suggested.
Sirius hesitated. He was reluctant to split up at the moment but the reality was they needed to eat.
"I'll check at the desk and see what is close," Remus promised. "And I'll get something that is fast."
Sirius rubbed his forehead. "Okay. But be careful and come back if you run into any trouble."
"I will," Remus replied.
Sirius rifled through his pockets and handed Remus some cash. "Here's some Muggle money. Get Harry some fresh fruit, if there's anything available."
"Harry was born eating fruit, I swear," Remus grinned.
"True," Sirius agreed.
Remus left and Sirius went to check on Harry. Harry was sprawled on the bed, sound asleep. A rested Harry would be easier to handle when they were in the bank.
Just about the time Sirius was starting to worry, Remus came back with a full string bag.
"No apples but I found some grapes, peaches, and a melon," Remus reported. "I bought only a bit of each. I got us some olives, cheese, and a loaf of bread."
"Sounds good," Sirius replied. "Harry's still sleeping, so let's eat and when he wakes, we can change and feed him. Then we can head to the bank."
"How long will he sleep, do you think?" Remus asked.
"About an hour, I guess," Sirius estimated. "I don't know enough about his schedule to be sure."
"How much sleep did you get in the last two days?"
"Enough," Sirius said firmly. "I'll sleep once we're safe."
"I am duty-bound to remind you of the time you tried to stay awake for three days straight to study for your OWLs," Remus said with a grin.
Sirius snorted. "That was awful, wasn't it?"
"Go. Lay down with Harry," Remus said. "Even an hour's rest will make you easier to deal with."
"All right, all right," Sirius sighed. He looked at Remus. "You'll be on guard?"
Remus nodded. "I will."
Even though he -- mostly -- slept last night, lying down with Harry felt good. He was still on high alert and knew he couldn't fully relax until they were safe. He cuddled Harry, who curled into him and closed his eyes.
Harry patting his face woke him up.
"Paddy!" Harry grinned when he saw Sirius open his eyes. "Play!"
"Hey, kiddo," Sirius said with a yawn. "How about we change you and see about some food?"
"Aps?" Harry asked hopefully.
"I think there are more grapes," Sirius negotiated.
"Aps!"
"Change first, anyway," Sirius said firmly. He got up from the bed, grabbed Harry and deftly changed the nappy. "It's probably about time to think about potty training you." As he said it, he realized he didn't know anything about potty training a small child. And Remus probably knew even less. What a mess!
Sirius tickled Harry a bit and carried him into the other room.
"Look who's up!" Sirius said, bouncing Harry in his arms.
"Did you sleep?" Remus asked.
Sirius nodded. "I did, so thanks for making me do that!"
"I cut up the fruit that's left and put everything else out, so we can finish up the food before we go," Remus said.
"That works," Sirius said. As anxious as he was to just go to the bank, he had to consider Harry. Feeding Harry would help keep him calmer.
It was an oddment of foods but Harry ate fruit and bread and cheese willingly. A quick wash cleaned Harry up and they were off to the bank.
"I'll put whatever is left in a bag," Remus suggested. "Harry may need to be... entertained at some point."
"Good idea," Sirius agreed. Merlin only knew how long they might be in the bank.
At the bank, a small building that was visible only to Magical people the way the Leaky Cauldron was, Sirius took a breath and they walked in.
"Sirius Black to see whomever may be available, regarding my Vaults," he said to the Goblin at the counter. "My apologies for not making an appointment."
The Goblin looked him up and down and not-quite-sneered. He pointed. "Sit there. Someone will be with you."
"May your enemies shower gold on you," Sirius said with a nod.
They sat on the chairs, Harry was quiet as he looked about the bank.
"Heir Black." A Goblin stood in front of them. "Come with me."
Sirius was startled by the title of 'Heir' but tried to keep that to himself. They followed the Goblin down a corridor that was much longer than the size of the building indicated it might be.
"In here." A door opened on one side. The Goblin continued to walk down the corridor, not waiting for a reply.
They went inside and sat in the chairs in front of the desk.
"Stormdancer!" Sirius greeted the Black account manager. He had met the Goblin once when his father had brought him to the bank for some purpose that Sirius had since forgotten. "May your enemies quake at your arrival, and your vaults overflow."
"Well met, Heir Black," Stormdancer said. "What brings you to Gringotts today?"
Sirius glanced at Remus who nodded. In for a pound...
"I seem to be in a spot of trouble and am looking for help," Sirius said baldly.
"Tell me about this 'spot' of trouble," Stormdancer directed.
Sirius recounted his battle with Pettigrew, his retrieval of Harry from Dumbledore, and his escape to Turkey.
Stormdancer remained motionless through the recital.
"What are you looking for assistance with?" Stormdancer asked.
"I would like to have James and Lily Potter's will read," Sirius said. "I am listed as the primary guardian for Harry and need to have that verified. I also need access to both Muggle and Wizarding funds. I plan to take Harry away and need to set up accounts to be able to pay for... things."
Stormdancer drummed his fingers on the desktop for a moment. Sirius stared for a moment at the elaborate designs on the Goblin's fingernails. The elaborate work represented various weather patterns and there was some intricate Rune work that Sirius had no hope of interpreting without some study.
"The British Ministry has been uncharacteristically quiet about the disappearance of Heir Potter," Stormdancer said. "If you did not have him here, no one would know where he was."
"Dumbledore is covering his tracks," Sirius suggested. "By not raising a fuss, everything is all right and everyone can go on and celebrate the demise of Voldemort."
"You do not think he is dead," Stormdancer said.
Sirius shrugged. "I don't know what to think, to be honest," he admitted. "I know Lily and James had their own plans. It's not like a small child can defeat a grown Wizard. No one was there to verify that Voldemort is truly dead. Until I have that, and until I know more about what Dumbledore is doing, my primary goal is to protect me and mine."
A sharp nod.
"We will start by you taking your Heir ring," Stormdancer declared. "That will give you a better claim to Heir Potter."
"I thought... I thought I was disowned," Sirius said softly.
"As far as the bank is concerned, you are the Heir until declared otherwise," Stormdance said. "I will get your ring and have the Potter's will brought forward."
"If you think that is best, then do so," Sirius said.
"Wait here." Stormdancer got up from the desk and went through a door in the back of the room.
"Where do you think he went?" Remus asked.
"There are... stories that all of the branches of Gringotts exist in one space," Sirius said. "My grandfather told me a story about going into the branch on Diagon Alley and walking out of the branch in Rome," Sirius admitted. "But no one really talks about it."
Remus looked thoughtful. "That's a powerful magic."
"It is," Sirius agreed.
Remus gave Harry bits of food from their leftovers as Harry started to fuss. Sirius knew that wasn't going to last forever but until they knew more, it would have to do.
It was about half an hour before Stormdance came back to them.
"While the Ministry is quiet, Albus Dumbledore seems to be... frantic, seems to describe his actions," Stormdancer said cheerfully.
"Couldn't happen to a better person," Sirius grinned.
"Dumbledore was inquiring about the Potter will," Stormdancer announced, putting a large scroll and a small box on his desk. "Fortunately, I got there first. Since he is named in the will, he could have had it read."
"Good thing we moved fast," Remus commented.
"First, your ring," Stormdancer said. He pushed the box toward Sirius. "If you are no longer the Heir, the box will not open for you."
Sirius held his breath as he reached for the box. It opened easily. He took the ring from the box and put it on.
"Oh!" The comfort of the family magic was something he didn't realize he was missing. There was a connection to his grandfather, tinged with surprise and then a pleased feeling that Sirius had taken up his ring. He needed to contact his grandfather when he had a chance.
"The full reading of the will requires the bank to notify all beneficiaries and to give them a chance to attend the reading," Stormdancer explained. "However, since there is a minor child that needs an official guardian, we can read that part of the will now."
"That is more than acceptable," Sirius agreed.
"Come, we need more room for this," Stormdancer said. He moved them to the conference table on the side of the office and sat the scroll on the table. He tapped the scroll.
"Damn." He heard Remus mutter. Images of James and Lily projected above the scroll.
"Mama!" Harry cried, holding out his hands.
Sirius blinked furiously, missing his friends.
James cleared his throat. "This is the last will and testament of James and Lily Potter. Sound mind and all that rot is in the will itself."
"James!" Lily sighed.
"You talked me into this," James grinned. "I'll do it my way!"
"Just get on with it!" Lily prodded.
There was a moment of silence, as if the will skipped over some parts since they were looking only for the custody section of the will.
"If we have both died, guardianship of Harry James Potter goes first to Sirius Orion Black. He is Harry's legal and magical godfather and will raise Harry to become the Lord Potter that I never had the chance to become," James said. He turned as if he knew were Sirius was sitting. "Take care of Harry, Pads. We trust you with our baby and know you will do right by him."
Sirius felt the tears fall down his cheeks.
"If for some reason, Sirius Black is unable to take care of Harry, our second choice is for Harry to be placed with Frank and Alice Longbottom. Alice is Harry's godmother and Harry will be well taken care of," James went on.
"Frank and Alice!" Remus breathed. He turned to Stormdance. "Can you get a message to the Longbottoms? They were also in hiding from Voldemort and someone needs to make sure that they are safe from the Death Eaters that may be running around."
Stormdancer nodded. "I will see that is taken care of."
"Thank you," Sirius said.
Stormdance resumed the animation.
"If Frank and Alice are not able to take custody of Harry, the following list of people are those who we wish to have Harry. Next is Minerva McGonagall, then Amelia Bones, Alistair Moody and Filius Flitwick." James sighed. "Moony, we'd have you in the list but, sorry, but I hope you understand."
Sirius heard Remus say a soft, "I do understand."
James went on. "At no point is Harry to go to Petunia Evans Dursley, or Albus Dumbledore. Neither is to be trusted with Harry."
The scene stilled.
"That is the entire custody section," Stormdance said.
"Mama!" Harry cried, reaching out toward the images.
Sirius held Harry close and they cried together.
Remus handed Sirius a handkerchief and took Harry from Sirius' lap. "Hang in there, Siri. We can do this," he said softly.
Sirius nodded. He took a deep breath and shuddered as he got control of himself. "I can fall apart later." He cast a Scourgify over himself and blew his nose. Once he had gathered himself, he spoke to Stormdancer, "Can you file the necessary paperwork to prove I have legal guardianship of Harry? Dumbledore won't give up whatever plan he seems to have in place and I need to be prepared for what he does next."
Stormdancer nodded.
"What do you have planned?" Remus asked.
"I had the idea that we'd go someplace warm," Sirius grinned. "I thought perhaps we'd go to American Samoa and live there for a few years."
Remus frowned. "Where?"
"Small island in the South Pacific Ocean," Sirius replied.
"An interesting choice," Stormdancer put in. "Being a territory of the United States, that puts you under the jurisdiction of MACUSA instead of the British Ministry. If the Ministry has any problems with your claims, they will need to work with MACUSA and the World Court."
"It was an idea Moody gave me," Sirius admitted. "Getting away from Britain all together would make it harder for anyone to come after us. We need time to breathe and Harry needs to grow up well away from any sphere of influence where Dumbledore operates."
"I would like to share some of this with the Horde," Stormdancer said. "There have been many... misgivings about Dumbledore over the past few years and your story will allow us to make some moves to protect you all."
"Whatever you need," Sirius replied instantly. "Tell me where to start."
"Your memory of your encounter with Peter Pettigrew, as a start," Stormdancer said. "And allow me to share information on your legal custody of Heir Potter."
"Not our location," Sirius said firmly.
"Agreed," Stormdancer replied. "There is not a branch of Gringotts on American Samoa but there is a small office on Fiji. There is a larger branch in Brisbane, Australia, if you need resources you cannot get elsewhere."
"Good to know," Sirius said.
"If you can wait a bit longer, I will arrange for a portkey to Brisbane and the staff there can give you another portkey to American Samoa," Stormdancer went on. "I do not off-hand know anything about the Wizarding population of American Samoa so I will arrange for Muggle funds to be readily available to you."
"If we can get to Brisbane tonight, that would be appreciated," Sirius said. "I feel like we're only one step ahead of Dumbledore and want to be sure we are beyond his reach as soon as possible. We can spend a couple of days in Brisbane, if that will give you time to make the financial arrangements."
Sirius hoped that being in Australia would add to their protection. The Australian version of MACUSA wasn't as powerful but they did work with the International Confederation of Wizards and the World Court. It was another layer of protection from the British Ministry.
Stormdancer nodded. "That would be helpful," he replied. "Do you need any funds now?"
"Some Muggle money would be good," Sirius said. "I've spent most of what I had on hand."
"I will get you a Muggle credit card, as well as cash, before you leave here," Stormdancer said. "I will have a meal brought and you can rest for a while as I do some of this paperwork and consult with my colleagues."
"That would be good," Sirius said, suddenly exhausted. He saw that Harry had fallen asleep in Remus' arms.
"Can we each have a credit card?" Sirius suddenly thought to ask. "One for me and one for Remus? He'll need to have some of his own money to spend."
"You don't need to..." Remus started to protest.
"Moony. I need you to be able to help take care of Harry," Sirius said firmly. "That means you need some independence. We're going to a relatively small location and you need to be free to do whatever you need to do."
"But..."
"But nothing," Sirius declared. "If something happens to me, you need to be able to get help, if nothing else."
Remus considered that for a moment, then nodded jerkily. "All right."
"I will have that done," Stormdancer said. "Any limits?"
"Set up a separate Vault for Remus," Sirius decided. "Put a hundred thousand Galleons in it." He stopped Remus' automatic protest with a hard look. "If something happens to me, the Family Magic may not let you access anything linked to me. You need this. It's for Harry."
Remus rubbed Harry's back and sighed. "Do what you want," he gave in. "You will anyway."
Sirius laughed. "I will, won't I?"
Stormdancer went over to what looked like a blank wall and opened a door.
"The room next door will be more comfortable," he said. "Food will be brought shortly. There is a cot for Heir Potter, if you'd like to lay him down."
"Excellent!" Sirius said. "Thank you."
"I will be back in about half an hour," Stormdancer said as he exited the room through the back.
Sirius helped Remus move Harry to the cot and they sank down on the comfortable chairs. "Oh, this is so much better!" Remus commented.
A tray of food and drink appeared on the low table in front of them.
"Somehow, I'm starved!" Sirius said, pouring tea and then taking a sandwich.
"You haven't had a chance to relax in... it's only been two days," Remus said. "And even before that, Merlin only knows how much rest you were getting, chasing after Death Eaters."
Sirius rubbed a hand over his face. "I've not had a quiet day in more than a month," he admitted.
"So the first thing we're going to do, once we get to... American Samoa? What made you pick that?" Remus asked as he took his own sandwich.
"Well, Moody gave me the idea to look outside Britain," Sirius recounted. "I was in the library in the Ministry in the Spring and there was a globe of the world. So I played with it for a bit and found that American Samoa is about as far away from Britain as one can get. It's almost literally on the other side of the world. There's an island called Samoa but the idea of being in the MACUSA jurisdiction was attractive." He took another bite of his sandwich and drank some tea. "It wasn't an immediate 'aha' thing but it came together over a couple of months."
Remus looked at him. "You've been planning on leaving for a long time."
Sirius shrugged. "It wasn't deliberate," he admitted. "It was idle speculation, mostly of the 'where could one go to get away from all this shite' sort of day-dream. But, now I'm glad I had that thought."
"Or something was guiding you to be prepared," Remus said softly.
Another shrug. "Maybe. But I'll take it." Sirius knew that Fate played a large part in the world but also did not want to chance her direct attention.
They ate their sandwiches and Sirius checked on Harry, who was starting to stir.
"Okay, one fresh nappy coming up," Sirius said. "We're going to have to potty train you sooner than later."
"Do you know how to do that?" Remus asked.
"Nope!" Sirius said cheerfully. "But I suspect we can find someone to help."
"What happened to Harry's nanny Elf?" Remus asked.
"James transferred all the Potter Elves over to others," Sirius said. "He didn't want to risk their lives if... well, when Voldemort came after them."
Remus sighed. "Guess we'll figure this out."
"That we will," Sirius replied, picking Harry up from the cot. "How about something to eat?" Sirius asked Harry.
"Aps!" Harry said.
"You have a one track mind, kid." Sirius shook his head. A cut-up apple popped onto the table. "And you have some friends." He lifted his voice slightly. "Thank you for the apple."
Harry ate the apple slices and bits of sandwich. A glass of milk had appeared part way through Harry's meal, to Sirius' appreciation. Harry ate eagerly. When he seemed to be finished eating, Sirius set him down, to allow Harry to scamper about the room for a bit. They had all been cooped up as part of their traveling and Sirius knew Harry needed to burn off some energy.
Harry was chasing after a bird that Remus had created from a napkin when Stormdancer came to the doorway.
"Everything satisfactory?" he asked.
"Definitely," Sirius replied. "Our thanks to your kitchen."
"You will be interested to know that Albus Dumbledore has just been banned from Gringotts for a month," Stormdancer said with a fierce grin. "He made such a fuss about the fact that the Potter's will has been read, even in part, that the Horde had no choice but to eject him from the Bank and ban him."
"When do we have to have an official reading of the entire will?" Sirius asked with a frown.
"You have six months from now to schedule a date," Stormdancer said. He looked sly for a moment. "You are certainly entitled to have the actual reading done in the location of your choice."
"So if we have the reading, say, in Brisbane..." Sirius was thoughtful. Then shook his head. "Maybe not. We won't want to give anyone a hint of where we are."
"At least do Rome," Remus put in. "That takes it out of Britain and into ICW jurisdiction."
"Good idea," Sirius nodded. "In fact, let's plan on Rome and at the last possible date, if you would?" He looked at Stormdancer. "Will that work for you?"
"If we get especially lucky, Dumbledore will get himself banned from the Bank for six months and he will not be able to attend," Stormdancer said. "And we will assist you in traveling to Rome for the reading."
"Oh. Well. That would be... good!" Sirius laughed. The idea of Dumbledore not being able to attend the reading of the Potter's Will lifted a weight he didn't even know was there. Interesting. He'd unpack that later.
Stormdancer handed Sirius a wallet and another to Remus. "There is cash, credit cards, and travel documentation in these. You can key them to your magic so no one can take them away from you."
"Thank you, again," Sirius said. "One last thing. I'd like to send a letter to my grandfather. I almost went to him but I wasn't sure of my reception there. The Heir Ring tells me that he is pleased I've taken the Ring and I suspect he would welcome us. I don't want to take this part of the War to his doorstep but I do want to leave him a way to contact us."
"We should get an owl in Brisbane," Remus suggested. "It can take mail between us and Brisbane and then through the Bank."
"There is a minimal fee for that, but it can be arranged," Stormdancer nodded. "And it would help keep your location secret."
"I'll have someone in Brisbane set up a mail ward so that any mail sent to me comes to the bank," Sirius decided. "And if I can add screening to deal with Howlers and malicious mail, that will be worth the cost."
"I will see to starting the arrangements for that," Stormdancer promised. "Your portkey to Brisbane will be ready in half an hour. There is an account book in your wallet. Anything else you need can be requested through that, or through the branch in Brisbane."
"Once we're safe, I know there will be a million other things we'll think of," Sirius admitted. "But this is a good start."
"Here is some parchment, and a quill." Stormdancer handed the items to Sirius. "Write to your grandfather and I will personally see that it is delivered to him."
Sirius went over to the conference table and debated about what to write.
Grandfather,
You noticed that I have finally taken the Heir Ring. I will need that in the upcoming months, both for the access to needed funds and the rank it gives me.
Stormdancer can tell you what is happening to me. I am with Remus and another. We plan to go to ground to keep ourselves safe.
Whatever you do, do not trust Albus Dumbledore. He was somehow involved in James' and Lily's deaths. I don't know all the details or why, but I can state with certainty that the Potter's deaths can be laid at his feet. You never met my friend Peter Pettigrew but know he is a Death Eater and he gave Voldemort access to the Potters.
You can contact me through the bank. I don't know if or when we will be back in England. I suddenly find that I do not want to leave you but I must.
Yours,
Sirius Orion Black, Heir Black
He folded the letter and sealed it with his magic. He handed it to Stormdancer.
"I will take care of this," Stormdancer said. "Now it is time for you to be going."
Sirius stood and held out a hand. "May your enemies quail at the sight of you and your vaults never be empty of gold."
Startled, Stormdancer shook Sirius' hand. "May your travels be easy and your enemies lay harmless at your feet."
Sirius gathered up Harry and they went back through the corridors to another room.
"Sorry," Sirius said softly to Harry. He cast the sleeping charm so that the toddler would not experience the portkey travel. Traveling this distance wasn't pleasant and it could be a nightmare for a young child.
Remus cast a sticking charm on Harry so that it was easier for Sirius to hold on to him.
The Goblin in the room handed them a thick rope. "Your portkey will be leaving in one minute."
"Cast that sticking charm on my hand?" Sirius asked. "This is going to be horrid and I need all the help I can get."
"Sure." Remus cast the charm. Sirius smiled as Remus did the same for himself.
"And... now!"
Sirius felt the pull behind his navel and the squeeze seemed to go on forever. He must have lost consciousness for the next thing he knew, he was on his arse in a room with a different Goblin on duty.
"You all right?" Remus asked worriedly.
Sirius closed his eyes for a moment, checking for Harry as he shook the cobwebs from his brain. "Give me a minute," he said.
"We have time," Remus said. "Just... let me help you up." He glanced at the Goblin in the room. "We'll probably need to move soon."
"Oh. Right," Sirius muttered. "Okay. He shook loose the rope and took Remus' hand. Remus hauled him up and steadied him.
"If Heir Black would like, we have a Healer on staff that could see you," the Goblin said.
"It would be a good idea," Remus urged.
"All right, all right," Sirius nodded. "Just... it's like I had the wind knocked out of me."
"Have you ever traveled this far by portkey?" Remus asked.
Sirius shook his head. "No." This is where Remus' werewolf constitution would be to his advantage.
"That is probably it," Remus said. "Come on. It won't hurt to be checked out."
Remus guided Sirius, who still carried Harry, and the followed a guide to the Healing Hall.
Interestingly enough, a Wizard was present in the Hall.
"I am Healer Hopgood," he introduced himself. "What seems to be the problem?"
"My friend, Sirius Black, and I -- my name is Remus Lupin -- just came from Istanbul by portkey," Remus explained as he guided Sirius to a bed. "It hit Sirius hard and he just needs to be checked out."
"Can you take the child?" Hopgood asked.
Remus unstuck a still-sleeping Harry and put him on the next bed. "We cast a sleeping charm on him because of the distance."
Sirius watched as Hopgood cast a standard diagnostic charm on him.
"This looks like mostly stress and exhaustion," Hopgood decided. "Some sleep and food will take care of most of it." He turned to Remus. "Would you like me to check the child?"
"Siri?"
Sirius nodded. "A good idea," Sirius said. "His name is Harry."
Hopgood cast the same charm over Harry. He frowned. He cast a more complex diagnostic.
"Are you his parents?" Hopgood asked.
"Guardians," Sirius got out. "Stormdancer is our account manager. Harry's parents were murdered by Voldemort two days ago." Sirius frowned. "Why?"
"The child is in relatively good physical health," Hopgood reported. "He has a small core limiter that is commonly used by parents on very magical children."
Sirius shook his head. "Lily and James talked about it but did not do that."
"There is also a matter of the wound on his forehead," Hopgood went on. "There seems to be some foreign magic embedded in the wound. Determining what it is will take some work that I am not equipped to do right now."
"Is it dangerous?" Sirius demanded.
"It does not seem to be," Hopgood replied.
"Take the limiter off his core, and harvest the signature of whomever placed it," Sirius ordered. He had his suspicious but did not want to influence the Healer.
"I can do that," Hopgood said. He gathered a parchment and quill for the process. Sirius was grateful that Hopgood moved to the other side of Harry's bed so that he could watch what was going on.
Removing a core limiter on a child was relatively simple and gathering the magical signature just another step in the process. Harry slept through the charms.
"If you would seal that and ensure that it is given to Stormdancer, that would be appreciated," Sirius said.
"Can we stay here for..." Remus cast a Tempus to find it was two o'clock in the morning. "... the night?"
"I would actually encourage that," Hopgood said. "I'd like to check Harry out in a few hours, once he's awake. And that will let me give Mr. Black a light Sleeping potion as well as a nutritional draught. He could use a solid night's sleep."
"Can you watch, Moony?" Sirius asked. "Did you get any sleep... how long have we been doing this?"
"I can watch," Remus nodded. "I'll sleep when you wake up."
"You are safe here," Hopgood protested. "You can both sleep."
Sirius waved a hand. "It's a long story," he said. "And we have every right to be paranoid. Let him watch while Harry and I sleep."
"If you must," Hopgood sighed. He went into a room and brought back two vials. "A standard nutritional draught and half a dose of Dreamless Sleep."
Sirius examined the vials and then downed the liquids. They both tasted nasty, in different ways of course. He handed the vials back to Hopgood. He lay back on the bed and closed his eyes.
He was warm when he woke up. He opened his eyes to find Harry in the bed with him. He looked around to find Remus.
"You both slept better together," Remus admitted. "It was easier just to give in to that."
"Never a problem," Sirius said. He stretched. "That does feel better. What time is it?"
Remus cast another Tempus to show it was ten in the morning.
"Whoa!" Sirius said. "I was tired. And you must be tired by now."
"Healer Hopgood gave me a Pepper-Up to help stay awake," Remus admitted. "It'll be another couple of hours before I'm ready to sleep."
Harry stirred. "Paddy?"
"Hey, pup," Sirius said. "Let's get you up and maybe Moony can find us some breakfast? Or lunch? Whatever."
"Healer Hopgood would like to check you over first," Remus admitted. "He has a small monitoring charm that will let him know you're both awake."
Sirius had to allow that a Healer was allowed to keep an eye on them in his own Hall. But it was an uncomfortable feeling, being closely monitored.
Sirius used the bathroom as Remus cleaned up Harry. By the time they were done, Hopgood had come into the Hall.
"The good news is that you are both looking better," Hopgood said. "I can see your energy levels are better and you look more rested. I am going to recommend some nutritional potions for you, Heir Black. You've obviously been working too hard for some time and the nutritional portions will help shore you up both magically as well as physically."
Sirius nodded. He wasn't surprised by that.
"Heir Potter is physically better for a good night's sleep," Hopgood went on. "Losing his parents will echo in his magic for some time, but that is a natural progression. The worst of it will ease in a few months, although there may be a resurgence when he is old enough to understand what has happened."
"And the bad news?" Sirius asked.
"I shared the diagnostic with the Master of the Healing Hall and she is convinced the foreign magic embedded in Harry's wound is a soul shard," Hopgood said softly. "It is contained and will not immediately affect Harry but it is something that should be dealt with."
Sirius was horrified. "A soul shard? How could that happen?"
"The Horde has access to information about soul shards that is, well, not available to the general public," Hopgood admitted. "The fact that it is a soul shard is all they would tell me. They would like to have Harry examined by a Goblin Healer and it was intimated that it may require ritual magic to remove the shard from Harry."
"Can that be done here?" Sirius asked. "I'm not taking Harry back to Britain unless it is the only option."
"I've been assured the matter can be dealt with here in the bank," Hopgood replied. "The ritual does not have to be performed immediately but I am to recommend to you that it be performed inside the next six months."
Sirius rubbed his face. "Since it's not an immediate emergency, I'd like a chance to settle into a new home, get both of us healthy. Or healthier, anyway. Can we schedule the ritual for three months from now?"
Hopgood nodded. "That is certainly acceptable. It also allows the conclave to study the information we have and prepare for the ritual."
"Then that's what we will do," Sirius declared. "Brisbane was only supposed to be a one or two day stop before we traveled to American Samoa."
"I have been asked to collect additional diagnostics on Harry," Hopgood said. "To assist in preparing for the ritual."
Sirius nodded. "Go ahead," he agreed. "Whatever we need to do to help Harry."
Sirius watched as Hopgood performed a diagnostic he had not seen before. But Sirius was not familiar with all the options a Healer had and had to trust that the Horde would have Harry's best interest in mind.
"If someone can direct us to a quiet Muggle hotel, that would be appreciated," Sirius said. "We have some shopping to do and want to breathe for a minute before we make the last jump to American Samoa."
"There are several options, some near the bank if you think you'll need to come back for any reason," Hopgood replied. "I'll have someone bring you some breakfast and a list of hotels."
"Near the bank would be good," Sirius said. Being able to get to the bank in case Dumbledore did find them would be to their advantage.
"Eat a good breakfast before you leave and do not hesitate to eat whenever you think you are hungry," Hopgood said. "Your magic can use the calories. And with removing the limiter, young Harry will eat more also. I recommend a number of smaller meals and snacks all day long, rather than large meals."
"That will work," Sirius said.
A large breakfast, including Harry's apple, was brought to them. They all ate heartily. As they ate, Harry was allowed to roam around the examination room. Sirius and Remus looked over the list of hotels.
"I don't know, Pads," Remus admitted. "I don't seem to have a strong preference for any of them."
"We won't know until we get there, then," Sirius replied. "And if it's awful, we can move to someplace else for a couple of days. It's only temporary, so it has to be bad to not be able to stay there for up to a week. The Horde would never list any place that would be that bad."
"True," Remus said.
"Anything else we need to do?" Sirius asked.
"Not that I can think of," Remus replied.
Sirius looked at the list. "Then let's start with the first name on the list and see what happens."
The first hotel listed was only three blocks from the bank and the walk felt good. The clerk ignored their slightly disheveled looks and they were soon settled in a two bedroom suite. There was a separate cot for Harry in one bedroom -- that Sirius doubted would be used -- and a sitting room between the two bedrooms. Each bedroom had its own en suite.
"This is nice," Sirius said. "And I know you're about to fall asleep on your feet, Mooney. Get some rest and Harry and I will go and play in the bathroom. I could use a good washing up and Harry will have fun playing in the water. I'll order some food when we're done and you join us when you've had a good sleep."
"Sounds good," Remus nodded. "Good night! Day! Whatever..." He went into the bedroom and closed the door.
Sirius laughed.
"Come on, pup," Sirius said to Harry. "Paddy needs a long, hot shower and you can come and play in the water."
"Play!" Harry repeated.
Sirius kept the temperature of the shower lower than he might use on his own, in deference to Harry scampering about at his feet. Sirius transfigured a washcloth into a soft ball that Harry could throw about the bathroom as he played. It was good to see Harry enjoying himself.
Sirius used the towels in the bathroom to dry them both off, not needing to hurry for a change.
Dressed and wide awake, Sirius went into the sitting room and turned on the telly. Harry was initially mystified by the moving pictures but eventually watched the people on the screen in fascination.
Sirius clicked through the channels and found a child-friendly channel. The Australian accents were unfamiliar but cartoons were cartoons anywhere.
With Harry watching the television, Sirius called down to the desk to ask about food options. The cheerful clerk explained what options the hotel restaurant had and some options from nearby establishments.
"Let's start with sandwiches, then. Hmm... ham, roast beef, and tuna will be good. Some lemonade, milk, and a pot of coffee," he said. "If you have some cake or biscuits, I mean cookies, for dessert, that would be good." He looked at Harry. "If you have any fresh fruit, that would be good. An apple is preferred but whatever you have on hand is fine."
"Certainly, sir," she said. "Is that all?"
"For now," Sirius said.
"Give us about half an hour," she said.
"That will be fine. Thank you," Sirius replied.
Noting that Harry seemed reasonably content for the moment, Sirius dropped on the couch to gather his thoughts. He'd have to make a list of things they should purchase before they left Brisbane. Harry needed more clothes, as did he. He had no idea what Remus had but he'd assume none of it was the warm weather clothing they'd need when they got to their destination.
Oh. And an owl. He'd ask at the bank if there was a magical menagerie where they could get an owl. What else? Books. Notebooks. Parchment. Quills. Ink. Pens. Toys. He sighed. The list was endless.
Once Remus was up, they could brainstorm ideas of things they should get here and what they could probably get once they settled in American Samoa. It was remote and small, but not uncivilized.
They spent five days in Brisbane. They shopped in a variety of stores for a couple of hours in the morning, taking a break for lunch, and then again in the afternoon. Larger items were delivered to their hotel and shrunk when they were alone.
The bank was helpful in getting an owl. They found a young, male Barn Owl that was friendly with Harry, which was Sirius' major concern. It was also reassuring to find a type of owl that would not be easily identified as being from Australia.
They met with Healer Hopgood to schedule the ritual to remove the soul shard from Harry.
"Late January is a good time," Hopgood stated. "It is past Yule and--" with a quick glance at Remus "--the date is near the new moon."
"That's... good," Sirius replied. Merlin! He had been so focused on Harry that he had forgot that the full moon would be next week.
"If you would like," Hopgood said. "There is not a cure but a... taming of the wolf available, if you are interested."
"Moony?" Sirius looked at his friend.
"I'll do whatever I need to keep Harry safe," Remus said, looking down at his feet.
"Remus. You are as important as Harry to me," Sirius admitted. "I need to protect you both."
"You obviously have been together for some time. How have you..." Hopgood asked delicately.
"I'm an animagus," Sirius admitted. "In my form, I'm essentially another animal and his wolf and my form get along. But that's not an option Harry will have."
"Interesting," Hopgood replied, thoughtfully. "Harry is too young to perform a human transformation on, so that is not an option."
"At the very least, we can find someone to leave Harry with and I can go off with Remus," Sirius suggested.
"Siri!"
"I don't know!" Sirius snapped. He took a breath. "I'm making this up as we go!"
"Since the full moon is in five days, let me give you the information about what the Horde has to offer," Hopgood said gently. "You will be welcome to leave Harry in care of the Bank in Fiji for the... duration. I understand that should be within your Apparition capabilities, Heir Black. It is not perfect but it is a secure option."
Being that far away from Harry wasn't ideal but it would work, Sirius knew. And the Horde would keep Harry safe rather than having to rely on people they had just met.
"That's what we'll have to do this month," Sirius nodded. "Would you let the staff in Fiji know to expect us?"
"Not a problem," Hopgood nodded.
"I'll be fine," Remus said.
"We will work it out," Sirius said. "This is a short term solution until we have time to work it out better, is all."
Remus did not look convinced but Sirius figured it would have to do.
"Thank you," Sirius said to Hopgood. "The House of Black appreciates the care you have shown us."
Hopgood gave a small bow. "The Horde seems to have a special interest in you and young Harry. I am glad to be of service to a valued patron."
Their portkey to American Samoa was the next day. They had fortunately been packing their purchases as they went along, so only the last minute packing needed to be completed.
Sirius took the owl they had named Nereus -- as the father of the sea nymphs -- to the window. "I know owls don't do well with portkeys, so I'm going to let you find your own way to us. There will be places you can rest along the way, so don't worry about getting to us immediately. Okay?"
The owl hooted at him and took off into the night.
"Bye, Nerry!" Harry waved as the owl flew away.
"He'll be back," Sirius promised. "Okay, a good night's sleep and tomorrow will be a big day."
Back at the Bank, Remus cast a sticking charm on a sleeping Harry and then stuck them both to the heavy rope they had been handed.
"And... now!" the Goblin in the room said.
The tug behind his navel wasn't as dramatic as it had been for the trip to Brisbane, Sirius was glad to realize. He still ended up on his arse at the landing room but he quickly climbed to his feet. Remus ended the sticking charms and they looked around.
A single Wizard was in the room with them.
"Welcome to American Samoa," the dark-skinned man said cheerfully. "There are some small paperwork issues we need to go through, since I understand you plan to live here for some length of time."
"We do," Sirius agreed.
"Always good to welcome new blood to the island," he said. "My name is Hemi and I have been assigned as your guide."
"Oh," Sirius replied. "I didn't expect..."
"My employers of the Horde wish to make your transition here as easy as possible," Hemi said.
"All right," Sirius replied. "We'll need a place to stay for at least a few days until we can look around and find a house we can buy."
"I have arranged for you to stay in a local hotel for at least a week," Hemi said. "That can be extended for as long as you need until you have a place to move to."
"Thank you," Sirius said.
Hemi had a vehicle to drive them to the hotel and helped them check in.
It took them past the full moon to find a home they were comfortable with. Sirius had taken Harry to the Bank in Fiji and then he and Remus had run under the full moon among the trees in a deserted section of the National Park of American Samoa.
Nereus showed up nine days after they arrived on the island, looking pleased at having found them again.
"Good job!" Sirius praised him. "How about some rest and then I'm sending you to Fiji to pick up our mail."
The owl hooted at them and accepted the treat Sirius offered. He moved to the perch that had been set up and settled in for a nap.
The first batch of mail was small but contained a hoped-for response from his grandfather.
Sirius,
Thank you for your letter. I have spoken to Stormdancer and he has explained your need to leave Britain for your safety as well as your ward's.
The Horde has taken the information you gave them and it has created quite the stir. There are articles in the Daily Prophet accusing Dumbledore of being a pawn of Voldemort's, as well as possible Line Theft in attempting to take Harry Potter under his control. Of course, the potential Line Theft is of the most interest in the Wizengamot. I will follow all of that with great interest.
If you have not thought to do so, I would encourage you to create a will and name your ward as your heir. That would serve to protect you both within the Black Family Magic.
You will not have heard that there was a Death Eater squad sent to against the Longbottoms. Your recommendation through Stormdancer helped keep the entire family safe. They have sent their thanks to me and asked me to pass that on to you.
I don't know if or when you will be able to return to Britain safely. There is one faction that considers the Voldemort problem to be ended but I understand your caution and concern that there are other elements that we are not aware of. Stormdancer indicates that the Horde agrees with your concern that Voldemort is not really dead and is searching for Peter Pettigrew as a source of more information.
I am pleased you have taken up your Heir ring. It should be a comfort to you in the days to come. I do hope you can come home before I pass, I would like to meet my great-grandson.
Stay safe. I love you.
Grandfather
Sirius found a tear rolling down his face. He never expected the acceptance he found here. He touched the letter lightly. "Thank you, grandfather," he said softly. He put the letter in the wallet he had gotten from the Bank for safekeeping.
He looked around their new home. They had found a property near the National Park on a large plot of land. The house had been partially built when they first saw it. A corporation had thought to develop a luxury hotel on the island but the funding had fallen through after building had started. They had worked with an architect to scale back the building but still ended up with seven bedrooms, a large space that could have been a ballroom but they hadn't quite decided what to do with it yet.
There was a small pool, to Harry's delight. They filled it with sea water, since fresh water was a precious commodity, and Sirius experimented with his magic to keep the water clean and child friendly. Under the South Pacific sun, Harry was turning brown and was very unlike the pale child he had been when they arrived.
The women at the local community center were helpful from their first days in giving Sirius and Remus advice on how to potty train Harry and what to do when he was ill. It was a learning experience for all of them.
Soon it was time to return to Brisbane for the ritual to remove the soul shard from Harry.
Harry was again asleep in Sirius' arms as Remus stuck them together. They grasped the rope.
Hemi was there, watching carefully.
"Ready?" Hemi asked.
Sirius nodded. The hook behind his navel whirled them away.
